- 1.A circular pizza base has a radius of 12 cm. Work out the area of the pizza base. Use π = 3.14.
- 2.A right-angled triangle has a hypotenuse of 10 cm. One of its other angles is 45°. Work out the exact length of one of the two shorter sides.
- 3.A ship's radar shows a lighthouse at the point (12, −4) on a grid measured in nautical miles. The ship is at (2, 5). The ship sails along the vector that takes it directly to the lighthouse, then sails along that same vector again. Work out the ship's final position.
- 4.A triangular solar panel has two edges of length 1.8 m and 1.3 m, with an angle of 72° between them. Manufacturing the panel costs £85 per square metre. Work out the total manufacturing cost. Give your answer to the nearest penny.
- 5.A ship leaves port P and sails 24 km on a bearing of 040° to a buoy Q. It then sails 31 km on a bearing of 115° to a lighthouse R. Work out the direct distance from P to R. Give your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 6.ABCD is a convex quadrilateral field with diagonal AC = 20 m. In triangle ABC, AB = 14 m and angle BAC = 35°. In triangle ACD, AD = 16 m and angle DAC = 40°. Work out the total area of the field. Give your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 7.A game designer places a coin at (5, 3) on a grid. The game rotates the coin 90° clockwise about the point (2, 3) each time the player presses a button, and this is applied twice in a row. Work out the coordinates of the coin after the button is pressed twice.
- 8.In triangle ABC, AB = 6 cm, angle ABC = 40° and AC = 9 cm. Using the sine rule, sin(ACB) = AB × sin(ABC) ÷ AC, which gives two possible values for angle ACB: 25.4° or 154.6° (each to 1 decimal place). By considering the angle sum of the triangle, decide which of these two values angle ACB can actually take, and hence work out angle BAC. Give your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 9.Two similar signs have lengths in the ratio 9 : 4. The larger sign has a side of length 14.4 cm. Work out the length of the corresponding side of the smaller sign.
- 10.In triangle ABC, AB = 9 cm, BC = 6 cm and angle BAC = 35°. This description fits two different triangles. Work out the two possible sizes of angle ACB, each to 1 decimal place.
- 11.A scale drawing uses a scale of 1 : 60. A path on the drawing is measured as 9.8 cm long. What is the real length of the path, in metres, to 1 decimal place?
- 12.A warehouse stores identical cube-shaped crates. Its plan view is a 2 by 4 rectangle of crate positions, and every position is filled to a height of 3 crates, except one corner position, which has only 2 crates stacked on it because a delivery was incomplete. How many crates are there in total?
- 13.A bead starts at position (2, −1) on a grid, in centimetres. It is moved by the column vector u, with top number 3 and bottom number 5, and then moved by the column vector v, with top number −7 and bottom number 2. Work out the coordinates of the bead's final position.
- 14.A sector of a circle has radius 6 cm and an arc length of 15.7 cm. Using π = 3.14, work out the angle of the sector.
- 15.A party hat is in the shape of a cone with a base radius of 6 cm and a slant height of 10 cm. Work out the curved surface area of the party hat. Use π = 3.14 and the formula curved surface area = πrl.
