- 1.A cube has edges of length 5 cm. Work out the length of the diagonal that runs from one corner of the cube to the opposite corner. Give your answer as a surd in its simplest form.
- 2.A ship's radar can detect other ships up to 20 km away, over a sector-shaped area with angle 90°. A monitoring company charges £0.50 per square kilometre covered by one radar sweep. Using π = 3.14, work out the total charge for one sweep.
- 3.Two identical ladders lean against the same vertical wall from opposite sides, each making an angle of 58.2° with the ground. The two ladders and the ground form a triangle. Work out the size of the angle between the two ladders at the top, where they meet.
- 4.In triangle ABC, AB = 12 cm, AC = 9 cm and angle BAC = 55°. Work out the size of angle ABC. Give your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 5.A sailmaker cuts two triangular sail panels from a pattern. Panel X has a 10 m side, with angles of 50° and 75° at its two ends. Panel Y also has a 10 m side, with angles of 50° and 75° at its two ends, in the same arrangement. The sailmaker wants to check the panels will match exactly, without cutting a third measurement. Which condition proves the two panels are congruent?
- 6.A fish tank is a cuboid measuring 40 cm long, 25 cm wide and 30 cm high. Water is poured in to a depth of 20 cm. Work out the volume of water in the tank, in litres.
- 7.A sector of a circle has radius 10 cm and angle 150°. Using π = 3.14, work out the perimeter of the sector, to 1 decimal place.
- 8.A rectangular garden bed measures 5 m by 3 m. A semicircular flower border is attached along one of the 3 m-wide ends, on the outside of the rectangle, so that the 3 m side is the diameter of the semicircle. Work out the total perimeter of the combined shape (the two long sides, the one remaining short side, and the curved edge). Use π = 3.14.
- 9.A robotic arm's tip starts at the point (12.5, −4.25) on a grid measured in centimetres. It moves by the vector to pick up a component, then by the vector to place it. Work out the coordinates of the tip after both moves.
- 10.A parallelogram-shaped tile has two sides of 6 cm and 9 cm, with an angle of 60° between them. Work out the area of the tile. Give your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 11.A parallelogram has an area of 54 cm² and a base of 9 cm. Work out its perpendicular height.
- 12.In triangle ABC, AB = 15.6 cm, AC = 8.9 cm and angle BAC = 112°, the angle between them. Work out the area of triangle ABC. Give your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 13.A triangular plot of land has sides AB = 13 m and AC = 10 m, with angle BAC = 72° between them. Work out the perimeter of the plot. Give your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 14.A crane's hook starts at the point (3.4, 9.5) on a construction site plan measured in metres. It moves along the vector to pick up a beam, then along the vector to place it. Work out the single column vector that describes the hook's overall movement from its start position to where it places the beam.
- 15.In a phone game, a character starts at the point (−5, 2) on a grid. It moves by the vector to collect a coin. The player now wants the character's next single move to finish at the point (3, 0). Write down the column vector of that second move.
