- 1.A bead starts at position (2, −1) on a grid, in centimetres. It is moved by the column vector u, with top number 3 and bottom number 5, and then moved by the column vector v, with top number −7 and bottom number 2. Work out the coordinates of the bead's final position.
- 2.A parallelogram-shaped tile has two sides of 6 cm and 9 cm, with an angle of 60° between them. Work out the area of the tile. Give your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 3.A regular pentagon has centre O. Each vertex is 8 cm from O, and each of the 5 triangles formed by joining O to the vertices is isosceles with an angle of 72° at O. Work out the area of the pentagon. Give your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 4.A regular octagonal tabletop has centre O. Each vertex is 30 cm from O. Work out the area of the tabletop. Give your answer to the nearest square centimetre.
- 5.A solid cone has a base radius of 6 cm and a vertical height of 10 cm. Work out the volume of the cone. Use π = 3.14 and give your answer correct to 1 decimal place.
- 6.A sector of a circle has radius 9 cm and angle 40°. Work out the area of the sector, in terms of π.
- 7.A line passes through the points (1, 2) and (3, 6). The line is reflected in the x-axis, and the image is then translated by the vector (2, 0). Work out the gradient of the image line after both transformations.
- 8.A ship's radar can detect other ships up to 20 km away, over a sector-shaped area with angle 90°. A monitoring company charges £0.50 per square kilometre covered by one radar sweep. Using π = 3.14, work out the total charge for one sweep.
- 9.In triangle ABC, angle ABC = 90° and angle BAC = 30°. The hypotenuse AC = 12 cm. Work out the exact length of AB.
- 10.A tap fills a tank at a rate of 18 litres per minute. The tank holds 0.45 m³. Work out how long the tap takes to fill the tank.
- 11.A hiker walks on a bearing of 065°. She then turns clockwise through 90° and continues walking in a straight line. What bearing is she now walking on?
- 12.A flower bed in the shape of a parallelogram has a base of 3.5 m and a perpendicular height of 2 m. Compost costs £4.80 per m². Work out the total cost of covering the flower bed with compost.
- 13.A triangular sail for a small boat has two sides of 4.2 m and 3.6 m, with an angle of 115° between them. One litre of waterproofing paint covers 3 m² of sail. Work out the least number of whole tins of paint (1 litre each) needed to cover the sail.
- 14.A raised garden bed is a prism whose cross-section is a triangle with a base of 1.2 m and a perpendicular height of 0.8 m. The bed is 3 m long. Work out the volume of soil needed to fill it, in m³.
- 15.A ship sails 12 km on a bearing of 070° from a harbour to a buoy. It then sails a further 9 km, still on a bearing of 070°, from the buoy to a lighthouse. How far is the lighthouse from the harbour, in kilometres?
