- 1.A circle has centre O. Radii OA and OB are drawn, together with the arc AB, enclosing a sector. The straight chord AB is also drawn. Write down the name of the region enclosed between the chord AB and the arc AB.
- 2.A cone is cut by a flat plane parallel to its circular base, partway up between the base and the apex. What shape is the cross-section?
- 3.A triangle has one unknown side or angle, marked x. In which one of these situations should the sine rule, rather than the cosine rule, be used to find x?
- 4.A builder props a straight plank against a vertical wall to reach a window ledge. The foot of the plank is 2.1 m from the base of the wall, and the plank is 3.5 m long. Work out how high up the wall the plank reaches.
- 5.Lines AB and CD are parallel. A straight line EF crosses AB at point P and crosses CD at point Q. At P, angle APE = 65°. Angle APE and angle BPQ are vertically opposite. Angle BPQ and angle PQD are co-interior (allied) angles. Work out angle PQD.
- 6.Triangle DEF has a right angle at E. Angle DFE = 60° and EF = 9 cm. Work out the exact length of DE.
- 7.A ship's radio can be heard up to 30 km from the ship. A lighthouse's light can be seen up to 20 km from the lighthouse. The ship and the lighthouse are 40 km apart along the coast. Describe the region where BOTH the radio can be heard AND the light can be seen.
- 8.p is the column vector with top number 2 and bottom number 3. q is the column vector with top number −1 and bottom number 4. Work out 2p + q, giving your answer as a column vector in the form (top, bottom).
- 9.A, B, C and D are points on a circle with centre O, in that order around the circle. B lies on the major arc AC, and angle AOC = 152°. In triangle ACD, angle ACD = 30°. Work out the size of angle DAC.
- 10.A quadrilateral has exactly two lines of symmetry, its two pairs of opposite angles are equal, and its diagonals are not equal in length. Write down the name of this quadrilateral.
- 11.Triangle ABC and triangle DEF both contain a right angle, at B and E respectively, and the hypotenuses AC and DF are equal in length. Which extra fact would prove the triangles are congruent by RHS?
- 12.A straight line touches the edge of a circle at exactly one point and does not cross into the circle at all. Write down the term for this line.
- 13.Which of these statements about solving a triangle is correct?
- 14.A shape is reflected in the line x = 1, and the image is then reflected in the line x = 5. Which single transformation is equivalent to this combination, for every point?
- 15.In triangle ABC, AB = 8 cm, AC = 5 cm and angle BAC = 60°. Work out the value of BC².
