- 1.Two sides of a triangle are 20 cm and 8 cm long. Write down which one of these lengths is possible for the third side.
- 2.Two triangular offcuts of wood, PQR and STU, are cut for a construction project. PQ = 8 cm, QR = 6 cm and angle PQR = 90°. ST = 8 cm, TU = 6 cm and angle STU = 90°. A carpenter wants to check the two pieces are identical in shape and size before using them as a matching pair. Using only the measurements given, and without working out any further lengths, which condition proves that triangle PQR is congruent to triangle STU?
- 3.O is the centre of a circle, and PT is a tangent to the circle at the point T. A is a point on the circle, with OA and OT both radii and angle AOT = 122°. At the point T, the chord TA lies between the radius TO and the tangent TP. Work out the size of angle ATP, the angle between the chord and the tangent.
- 4.Point P has coordinates (6, 4). P is rotated 90° clockwise about the point (1, 2), and the image is then translated by the vector (−3, 5). Work out the coordinates of the final image of P.
- 5.Triangle XYZ has angle X = 90°. Angle Y = 34°. Work out angle Z.
- 6.A, B, C and D are points on a circle with centre O, in that order around the circle. B lies on the major arc AC, and angle AOC = 152°. In triangle ACD, angle ACD = 30°. Work out the size of angle DAC.
- 7.Two similar triangles have lengths in the ratio 2 : 5. The sides of the smaller triangle are 4 cm, 6 cm and 8 cm. Work out the length of the longest side of the larger triangle.
- 8.In a construction, a point P is marked at the foot of the perpendicular drawn from point X to a straight line. Which statement correctly compares the distance XP with the distance from X to any other point on the line?
- 9.Triangle ABC has AB = 10 cm, BC = 7 cm and angle A = 40°. Triangle DEF has DE = 10 cm, EF = 7 cm and angle D = 40°. Sam says the two triangles are congruent by SAS. Which statement about Sam's claim is correct?
- 10.OABC is a parallelogram, with OA = a and OC = c. M is the midpoint of AB. Express the vector MC in terms of a and c.
- 11.A circular table mat has diameter 20 cm. Yasmin has a 70 cm length of ribbon and sews it around the edge of the mat with no overlap. Using π = 3.14, work out how much ribbon is left over after going around the mat once.
- 12.A construction for the perpendicular bisector of AB begins by opening a pair of compasses to more than half the length of AB, then drawing an arc centred at A. What is the next step?
- 13.A circle has circumference 31.4 cm. Using π = 3.14, work out the radius of the circle.
- 14.To prove that the angle at the centre is twice the angle at the circumference, a student draws radii OA and OC, where A and C are points on the circle and O is the centre. The student's first step is: 'Since OA = OC, both being radii of the circle, triangle OAC is isosceles, so angle OAC = angle OCA.' Is this first step correct?
- 15.A rhombus has all four sides equal in length, but it is not a square — its angles are not all 90°. How many lines of symmetry does this rhombus have?
