- 1.A circle with centre O has radius 17 cm. A chord AB is drawn so that the perpendicular distance from O to AB is 8 cm. Work out the length of the chord AB.
- 2.A rectangular garden gate is 3 m wide and 4 m high. A straight brace runs from one corner of the gate to the opposite corner. Work out the length of the brace.
- 3.A treasure map has a scale of 1 cm to 4 m. A path from the start to a rock is drawn as two straight sections, measuring 3 cm and 2.5 cm. Work out the total real distance from the start to the rock, in metres.
- 4.Work out the distance between the points (−3, 4) and (5, −2).
- 5.A solid pyramid has a square base of side 10 cm and four identical triangular faces. Its apex is directly above the centre of the base, at a vertical height of 12 cm, and the slant height of each triangular face — the distance from the apex to the midpoint of a base edge — is 13 cm. Work out the total surface area of the pyramid.
- 6.A tent's sloping side makes an angle of 45° with the ground. The sloping side is 3√2 m long. Using the exact value of sin 45°, work out the exact height of the tent.
- 7.A is the point (1, 3) and B is the point (7, 3). Work out the coordinates of the midpoint of AB.
- 8.The sum of the interior angles of a polygon is 1980°. Work out the number of sides of the polygon.
- 9.Two points on a circle divide its circumference into two arcs of different lengths. Write down the name given to the shorter of the two arcs.
- 10.OABC is a parallelogram, with OA = a and OC = c. X is the midpoint of the diagonal AC. Express the vector OX in terms of a and c, and use it to show that X also lies on the diagonal OB.
- 11.A plumber charges a £45 call-out fee, plus £28 for each hour worked. She works on a job for 3 hours 30 minutes, and her hours are billed by rounding up to the next whole hour. Work out the total amount she charges.
- 12.Work out the exact value of sin 45° × cos 45°.
- 13.In triangle OAB, OA = a and OB = b. M is the midpoint of OA, and N is the midpoint of OB. Express the vector MN in terms of a and b.
- 14.Which of these statements about the area formula Area = 1/2ab sin C is correct?
- 15.A drone starts at the point (3.5, −2) on a grid measured in metres. It flies by the vector to check a first sensor. The drone then needs to fly in a straight line to reach the point (−1.7, 9) to check a second sensor. Work out the column vector of this second flight.
