Answer key
- (d) £33.00 — The profit is 3/8 of £24 = (£24 ÷ 8) × 3 = £3 × 3 = £9.00. Selling price = £24 + £9.00 = £33.00. A candidate who gives the profit instead of the selling price gets £9.00. A candidate who subtracts the profit instead of adding it gets £24 − £9 = £15.00. A candidate who works out one eighth of £24 and adds that on, forgetting to multiply by the numerator 3, gets £24 + £3 = £27.00.
- (a) 1/5 — Work out the bracket first: 2 + 3 = 5. The reciprocal of 5 is 1/5. A candidate who forgot to take the reciprocal and just gave the value of the bracket wrote 5. A candidate who took the reciprocal but made a sign error wrote −1/5. A candidate who found the reciprocal of each number separately and added them, treating reciprocal as if it distributes over addition, worked out 1/2 + 1/3 = 5/6.
- (a) 18 minutes — Method: the buses leave together again after a number of minutes that is a multiple of both intervals, and the first such time is the lowest common multiple. Working: the multiples of 6 are 6, 12, 18, 24 … and the multiples of 9 are 9, 18, 27 … The first value in both lists is 18, which is 6 × 3 and 9 × 2. Answer: 18 minutes. The distractors: 54 minutes comes from multiplying 6 by 9, which does give a common multiple but not the lowest one; 3 minutes is the highest common factor of 6 and 9 rather than their lowest common multiple; 15 minutes comes from adding the two intervals together.
- (a) 33.5 mph — Method: the smallest possible actual value is half the rounding unit below the given value. Working: half of 1 mph is 0.5 mph, so the smallest possible speed is 34 − 0.5 = 33.5 mph. Answer: 33.5 mph. (33 mph comes from subtracting the whole rounding unit, 1, instead of half of it. 34 mph comes from giving the rounded value itself rather than the lower bound. 34.5 mph comes from adding the half unit instead of subtracting it, giving the upper bound.)
- (c) 1,000 m² — Method: round each length to 1 significant figure, then use area of a rectangle = length × width on the rounded lengths. Working: 19.6 m rounds to 20 m and 48.3 m rounds to 50 m, so the estimate is 20 × 50 = 1,000 and the area is about 1,000 m². Answer: 1,000 m². The distractors: 800 m² comes from rounding 48.3 down to 40 when the digit after its first significant figure is 8 and sends it up to 50, giving 20 × 40 = 800; 140 m² is the perimeter of the rounded rectangle, 2 × 20 + 2 × 50 = 140, not its area; 70 m² comes from adding the rounded lengths, 20 + 50 = 70, instead of multiplying them.
- (d) 6 — Method: the square root of a product can be found either by multiplying first and then rooting, or by rooting each factor and multiplying the two roots together. Working: 4 × 9 = 36, and 6 × 6 = 36, so the root is 6; the same value comes from √4 × √9 = 2 × 3. Answer: 6. The distractors: 36 comes from multiplying inside the root and then leaving the root untaken; 5 comes from rooting each factor and adding the results, 2 + 3, instead of multiplying them; 18 comes from rooting the 4 only and leaving the 9 untouched, giving 2 × 9.
- (a) 28.8 km/h — A compound unit is converted one part at a time. There are 3600 seconds in an hour, so in one hour the cyclist travels 8 × 3600 = 28 800 metres. There are 1000 metres in a kilometre, so 28 800 m = 28 800 ÷ 1000 = 28.8 km/h. 28 800 km/h leaves the distance in metres, 0.48 km/h converts the seconds to minutes rather than to hours, and 2.22 km/h divides by 3.6 instead of multiplying.
- (d) 6 × 10⁷ — 3 × 2 = 6, and 2 + 5 = 7, so (3 × 10²) × (2 × 10⁵) = 6 × 10⁷. Multiplying the exponents instead of adding them gives 2 × 5 = 10, so 6 × 10¹⁰. Adding the coefficients instead of multiplying them gives 3 + 2 = 5, so 5 × 10⁷. Subtracting the exponents instead of adding them gives 5 − 2 = 3, so 6 × 10³.
- (b) 1 : 2 — 2/5 of 50 is 20, so there are 20 red counters and 50 − 20 = 30 blue counters. Taking 5 red counters out leaves 15 red and 30 blue, so red : blue = 15 : 30. Dividing both parts by 15 gives 1 : 2. 2 : 3 is the ratio before any counters are removed, 2 : 1 has the two parts the wrong way round, and 4 : 5 comes from taking the 5 counters out of the blue instead of the red.
- (a) 56 — Method: count the ordered selections with the product rule first, then divide by the number of different orders in which any one committee could have been picked. Working: there are 8 choices for a first pupil, 7 for a second and 6 for a third, giving 8 × 7 × 6 = 336 ordered selections; any particular three pupils could have been picked in 3 × 2 × 1 = 6 orders, so the number of different committees is 336 ÷ 6 = 56. Answer: 56. The distractors: 336 comes from stopping at 8 × 7 × 6 and treating the three places as distinct posts when they are identical; 168 comes from dividing that product by 2 rather than by the 6 orders in which three chosen pupils can be listed; 24 comes from multiplying the 8 volunteers by the 3 places instead of multiplying the choices at each stage.
- (a) 25 — Reverse the operations in reverse order: undo the subtraction by adding 6, then undo the division by multiplying by 5. −1 + 6 = 5, so the number divided by 5 equals 5, and 5 × 5 = 25 — checking, 25 ÷ 5 − 6 = 5 − 6 = −1. A candidate who subtracted 6 again instead of adding worked out −1 − 6 = −7, then −7 × 5 = −35. A candidate who multiplied by 5 before undoing the subtraction, doing the inverse operations in the wrong order, worked out −1 × 5 = −5, then −5 + 6 = 1. A candidate who multiplied by 5 but forgot to undo the subtraction at all worked out −1 × 5 = −5 and stopped there.
- (c) 6 — 2 × 3 = 6, then 36 ÷ 6 = 6. Ignoring the brackets and working left to right gives 36 ÷ 2 = 18, then 18 × 3 = 54. Multiplying by the bracket instead of dividing by it gives 2 × 3 = 6, then 36 × 6 = 216. Dividing by only the 2 inside the bracket, and ignoring the × 3, gives 36 ÷ 2 = 18.
- (a) 3/13 — Vegetables are 9 of the 9 + 4 = 13 parts, so vegetables are 9/13 of the plot. Potatoes are a third of the vegetable section, so potatoes are 1/3 of 9/13, which is 9/39, simplifying to 3/13, of the whole plot. 9/13 comes from stopping after finding the fraction of the plot that is vegetables, without taking the further third for potatoes. 1/3 gives the fraction of the vegetable section that is potatoes, not the fraction of the whole plot. 4/39 comes from taking a third of the flowers' fraction, 4/13, instead of the vegetables' fraction.
- (c) −5 — Method: the bracket is worked out first, then the multiplication and the division, which stand as separate parts, and the subtraction that joins them is carried out last; subtracting a negative is the same as adding. Working: (−3) + 5 = 2, so the product is 2 × (−4) = −8; the division gives (−6) ÷ 2 = −3; joining them gives −8 − (−3) = −8 + 3 = −5. Answer: −5. The distractors: −11 comes from taking away 3 instead of taking away −3, giving −8 − 3 = −11; −1 comes from working from left to right once the bracket is done, giving −8 − (−6) = −2 and then −2 ÷ 2 = −1; 11 comes from treating the first product as positive because it was worked out from a bracket, giving 8 − (−3) = 11.
- (a) 23 — Division undoes multiplication, so the missing number is 391 ÷ 17 = 23. Writing down 17 repeats the number already given instead of solving for the missing one. Subtracting instead of dividing gives 391 − 17 = 374. Multiplying instead of dividing gives 391 × 17 = 6647.
