- 1.Ten players enter a chess tournament. Every player plays every other player exactly once. Work out how many games are played in the tournament.
- 2.Five different books are placed in a row on a shelf. Work out how many different orders the five books can be placed in.
- 3.Two fair six-sided dice are rolled together. One die is red and the other is blue. Work out how many different outcomes are possible.
- 4.A water tank holds 80 litres when full. It currently contains 60 litres. Work out what fraction of the tank is empty.
- 5.A quantity surveyor calculates a length as 24.6851 m. Round this length to 2 decimal places.
- 6.Rice is sold in a 400 g bag for £1.12 and in a 1.5 kg bag for £3.90. Work out how much less the rice in the larger bag costs per kilogram.
- 7.Four friends share a restaurant bill of £53.90 equally. A calculator gives each share as 13.475. Work out how much each friend should pay.
- 8.A charity trek covers 830 miles over roughly 19 days. By rounding each number to 1 significant figure, work out an estimate for the number of miles walked per day.
- 9.Work out (4 × 10³) × (3 × 10¹). Give your answer in standard form.
- 10.Work out (5 × 10⁴) ÷ (2 × 10⁻²). Give your answer in standard form.
- 11.A car travels 100 km, correct to the nearest km, in a time of 2 hours, correct to the nearest 0.1 hour. Work out the average speed, in km/h, to the greatest degree of accuracy the bounds can guarantee.
- 12.Round 0.006482 to 2 significant figures.
- 13.A van has a mass of 2,000 kg, correct to 1 significant figure. Using m for the mass of the van in kilograms, write down the error interval for m.
- 14.A company's turnover is 5.6 × 10⁷ pounds, spread evenly across 3.5 × 10² shops. Work out the average turnover per shop, in standard form.
- 15.A company sells 4 × 10³ items per day, each priced at £2.50. It operates for 3 × 10² days a year. Work out the company's total revenue for the year. Give your answer in standard form.
