- 1.Ten players enter a chess tournament. Every player plays every other player exactly once. Work out how many games are played in the tournament.
- 2.Write these fractions in order, starting with the smallest: 2/3, 3/5, 5/6, 1/2
- 3.A cheetah runs at a steady speed of 25 metres per second. Work out this speed in kilometres per hour.
- 4.The radius of a circular pond is given as 3.2 m, correct to 1 decimal place. Calculate the upper bound for the area of the pond, giving your answer correct to 3 significant figures.
- 5.A cube-shaped storage box has edges of length 7 cm. A shelf can hold a total volume of 2,000 cm³. Work out the greatest number of these boxes that will fit in that volume.
- 6.Five different books are placed in a row on a shelf. Work out how many different orders the five books can be placed in.
- 7.A crowd of 8,400 people is recorded correct to the nearest 100. Work out the smallest possible number of people in the crowd.
- 8.By listing systematically, work out how many two-digit multiples of 5 can be made using the digits 0, 3 and 5, if each digit can be used at most once and the number cannot start with 0.
- 9.Two-digit numbers are made using the digits 1, 2, 3 and 4, and no digit may be used twice in the same number. Work out how many different two-digit numbers can be made.
- 10.Postage on a parcel is calculated as £4.60, correct to the nearest 20p. Which of these could not be the actual cost of the postage?
- 11.A van has a mass of 2,000 kg, correct to 1 significant figure. Using m for the mass of the van in kilograms, write down the error interval for m.
- 12.A charity raises money from a raffle and a cake sale in the ratio 5 : 3. Altogether the charity raises £320. Work out how much money the cake sale raised.
- 13.A restaurant adds a service charge of 15% to a bill of £120. Work out the service charge.
- 14.A jumper is reduced by 15% in a sale to a price of £42.50. Work out the original price.
- 15.A plank of wood is 5 1/4 m long. Pieces of length 3/4 m are cut from it. Work out how many complete pieces of 3/4 m can be cut from the plank.
