- 1.A washing machine costs £320 before VAT. VAT is charged at 20%. Work out the total price including VAT.
- 2.A jug holds 1.8 litres of juice. Priya pours out 3/4 of a litre to fill a glass. Work out how much juice is left in the jug, in millilitres.
- 3.Two-digit numbers are made using the digits 1, 2, 3 and 4, and no digit may be used twice in the same number. Work out how many different two-digit numbers can be made.
- 4.A recipe needs 0.485 kg of flour per cake. A bakery estimates its flour order by rounding this amount to 1 significant figure, then multiplying by the 60 cakes it plans to bake. Work out the bakery's estimate for the total flour needed, in kg.
- 5.A car travels 180 km using 6 litres of fuel. Work out the car's fuel consumption in kilometres per litre, then work out how many kilometres it can travel on a full tank of 12 litres at this rate.
- 6.A plank of wood is 5 1/4 m long. Pieces of length 3/4 m are cut from it. Work out how many complete pieces of 3/4 m can be cut from the plank.
- 7.A cinema has 250 seats. 12% of the seats are reserved. Work out how many of the seats are reserved.
- 8.The density of a type of plastic is 0.9 g/cm³. Work out this density in kg/m³.
- 9.Leah measures the length of her classroom with a tape measure marked in centimetres. She writes the length down as 7.3157 m. Give a reason why this is not an appropriate degree of accuracy.
- 10.A café sells ice cream in three flavours: vanilla, mango and pistachio. Isla buys a cone with two scoops, using two different flavours, one for the bottom scoop and one for the top scoop. Work out how many different cones she could buy.
- 11.A crowd of 8,400 people is recorded correct to the nearest 100. Work out the smallest possible number of people in the crowd.
- 12.Work out (4 × 10³) × (3 × 10¹). Give your answer in standard form.
- 13.Petrol costs £1.48 per litre. Sam buys 35 litres and pays with three £20 notes. Work out his change.
- 14.Four friends share a restaurant bill of £53.90 equally. A calculator gives each share as 13.475. Work out how much each friend should pay.
- 15.3/5 of the students in a year group walk to school. 90 students walk to school. Work out the total number of students in the year group.
