- 1.A metal cube has a mass of 540 g and a volume of 60 cm³. Work out its density in g/cm³.
- 2.Expand and simplify (2 + √3)², giving your answer in the form a + b√3.
- 3.The distance from the Earth to the Moon is 384,000 km. Write this distance in standard form, in kilometres.
- 4.A plane flies 2340 km at an average speed of 780 km/h. It departs at 08:20. Work out the arrival time, using the 24-hour clock.
- 5.A spreadsheet shows that 812 − 397 = 315. Work out an estimate for 812 − 397, by rounding each number to the nearest 100, to check whether the spreadsheet's answer is reasonable.
- 6.A shop assistant says that 7.2 × 3.9 = 56.16. Work out an estimate for 7.2 × 3.9, by rounding each number to the nearest whole number, to show that the assistant’s answer cannot be correct.
- 7.Work out an estimate for 2.9² + 3.1², by rounding each number to the nearest whole number.
- 8.Four friends share a restaurant bill of £53.90 equally. A calculator gives each share as 13.475. Work out how much each friend should pay.
- 9.Write down the exact decimal value of the fraction 1/6.
- 10.A student works out the exact area of a circle with radius 4 cm by squaring the radius but forgetting to multiply by π. Work out the correct exact area of the circle, in terms of π.
- 11.During one night on a mountain, four hikers each recorded the temperature they felt: Ben −6 °C, Priya −2 °C, Sam −9 °C, Alex 1 °C. Work out the difference between the coldest and the warmest of these four temperatures.
- 12.Work out 3 1/5 + 1 2/3. Give your answer as a mixed number in its simplest form.
