- 1.A student works out the exact area of a circle with radius 4 cm by squaring the radius but forgetting to multiply by π. Work out the correct exact area of the circle, in terms of π.
- 2.To estimate the cost of buying 38.7 m of rope at £21.40 per metre, both numbers are first rounded to 1 significant figure. Work out the estimate.
- 3.A number, n, is a multiple of both 6 and 9. Work out the smallest possible value of n that is greater than 20.
- 4.A recipe uses 0.625 kg of flour. Write this mass as a fraction of a kilogram, in its simplest form.
- 5.Work out 35% of 180.
- 6.A weather app records the temperature at three points in one day: 6 °C at noon, −2 °C at midnight, and −7 °C just before dawn. Work out the difference between the highest and lowest of these three temperatures.
- 7.Without using a calculator, estimate √20 × √12, giving your answer to the nearest whole number.
- 8.The length of a pencil is 8.4 cm, correct to 1 decimal place. Using L for the length of the pencil in centimetres, write down the error interval for L.
- 9.A choir has sopranos, altos and tenors in the ratio 6 : 4 : 5. What fraction of the choir is not tenors?
- 10.In a youth club the number of girls is 2/3 of the number of boys. What fraction of the members of the club are girls?
- 11.Amelia estimates 48 × 21 by working out 50 × 20 = 1,000. Work out whether her estimate is an under-estimate or an over-estimate, and by how much.
- 12.Write down the reciprocal of 0.2
- 13.The number 36 can be written as 2² × 3², and the number 84 can be written as 2² × 3 × 7. Work out the highest common factor of 36 and 84.
- 14.Simplify (x⁻²)³, giving your answer as a fraction.
- 15.Work out the reciprocal of (2 + 3)
