- 1.A student works out the exact area of a circle with radius 4 cm by squaring the radius but forgetting to multiply by π. Work out the correct exact area of the circle, in terms of π.
- 2.In a class, 1/3 of the pupils are girls. There are 12 girls in the class. Work out how many pupils are in the class.
- 3.On a number line, point A is at −1. Point B is 4 units from point A. Write down the two possible positions of point B.
- 4.A plumber charges a call-out fee of £45 and then £28 for each hour she works. She is at a house from 09:15 until 12:45. Work out the total charge.
- 5.A number, y, is equal to 8.2 when rounded to 1 decimal place. Write down the error interval for y.
- 6.Work out (4 × 10⁻³) × (2 × 10⁵). Give your answer in standard form.
- 7.A number is divided by 5, then 6 is subtracted, giving the result −1. Work out the number.
- 8.A bag holds 50 counters. 2/5 of them are red and the rest are blue. 5 red counters are then taken out of the bag. Work out the new ratio of red counters to blue counters. Give your answer in its simplest form.
- 9.The recurring decimal 0.454545... can be written as 0.45 recurring, where both digits repeat forever. Let x = 0.45 recurring. Work out x as a fraction in its simplest form.
- 10.Write ∛(x²) as a single power of x.
- 11.A cyclist rides at a steady speed of 8 metres per second. Work out this speed in kilometres per hour.
- 12.A choir has sopranos, altos and tenors in the ratio 6 : 4 : 5. What fraction of the choir is not tenors?
- 13.A grain of fine sand has a mass of 0.001 grams. Write this mass in standard form.
- 14.A florist has 60 red roses and 84 white roses. She wants to make identical bunches using all the flowers, with the greatest possible number of bunches. Work out how many red roses will be in each bunch.
- 15.An allotment is divided into two plots in the ratio 2:3. The larger plot has an area of 18 m². Work out the fraction of the total area taken up by the smaller plot.
