- 1.Given that 4³ = 64 and 5³ = 125, estimate ∛100 to 1 decimal place.
- 2.In a science experiment, the temperature of a liquid is recorded as 18.6 °C, correct to the nearest 0.2 °C. Write down the error interval for the actual temperature, T °C.
- 3.A rectangular tile measures 45 cm by 0.6 m. Work out its area, in square centimetres.
- 4.At a bus station one bus leaves every 6 minutes and another leaves every 9 minutes. The two buses leave together at the start of the day. Work out how long it is until they next leave together.
- 5.Work out (−36) ÷ (−6) × 2
- 6.A gym increases its membership price by 1/5. The original price is £60. Work out the new price.
- 7.A concrete mix is made from cement and sand in the ratio 3 : 5 by mass. A builder mixes 96 kg of concrete. Work out the mass of cement in the mix.
- 8.A semicircle has a diameter of 8 cm. Work out the exact area of the semicircle, in terms of π.
- 9.Work out an estimate for 6.4 × 3.9, by rounding each number to the nearest whole number.
- 10.Ten athletes run in a final. Gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded to the first three athletes to finish, and there are no ties. Work out how many different ways the three medals can be awarded.
- 11.p = 24 and q = 6, each correct to the nearest integer. Work out the greatest degree of accuracy to which p ÷ q can be guaranteed correct.
- 12.Write 0.06 as a fraction in its simplest form.
- 13.A plank has length a = 12 cm and a second plank has length b = 7 cm, each correct to the nearest centimetre. Work out the upper bound of a + b.
- 14.To estimate the cost of buying 38.7 m of rope at £21.40 per metre, both numbers are first rounded to 1 significant figure. Work out the estimate.
- 15.A bag holds 5 different sweets. Noah takes 2 of the sweets out of the bag together, so the order in which he takes them does not matter. Work out how many different pairs of sweets he could take.
