- 1.A digital timer truncates every time to 1 decimal place. It shows a swimmer's time for one length as 12.3 seconds. Using t for the swimmer's actual time in seconds, write down the error interval for t.
- 2.Write ∛(x²) as a single power of x.
- 3.Simplify 5⁻² × 5⁴, giving your answer as a single power of 5.
- 4.Work out (−6) + (−4) × 3
- 5.The density of a type of plastic is 0.9 g/cm³. Work out this density in kg/m³.
- 6.A rope is measured as 15 m, correct to the nearest metre. Write down the error interval for the true length, l, of the rope.
- 7.A padlock code is formed from 3 different digits chosen from 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 (no digit may be used twice in the same code). Work out how many different codes can be made.
- 8.Work out ∛64.
- 9.Write 7/12 as a decimal, showing clearly which digit is recurring.
- 10.A shop assistant says that 7.2 × 3.9 = 56.16. Work out an estimate for 7.2 × 3.9, by rounding each number to the nearest whole number, to show that the assistant’s answer cannot be correct.
- 11.By considering fourth powers, work out which two consecutive integers ⁴√200 lies between.
- 12.Write 5,000,000 in standard form.
- 13.A choir has sopranos, altos and tenors in the ratio 6 : 4 : 5. What fraction of the choir is not tenors?
- 14.Work out 6² − 4².
- 15.Ten athletes run in a final. Gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded to the first three athletes to finish, and there are no ties. Work out how many different ways the three medals can be awarded.
