- 1.Write down the symbol that makes this statement true: −2/3 ___ −5/6
- 2.The decimal 0.111... has the digit 1 repeating for ever. Write 0.1 recurring as a fraction in its simplest form.
- 3.A fabric is dyed blue and yellow in the ratio 3 : 5. A tailor uses 1.5 m of blue fabric and the matching amount of yellow fabric needed for the ratio. Work out the total length of fabric used.
- 4.A company sells 4 × 10³ items per day, each priced at £2.50. It operates for 3 × 10² days a year. Work out the company's total revenue for the year. Give your answer in standard form.
- 5.The population of a planet is 8 × 10⁹. Write this population as an ordinary number.
- 6.3/5 of a 5/6 litre bottle of juice is poured out. Work out the exact volume poured out, in litres.
- 7.Write 0.35 as a fraction in its lowest terms.
- 8.Write 7/12 as a decimal, showing clearly which digit is recurring.
- 9.A plank has length a = 12 cm and a second plank has length b = 7 cm, each correct to the nearest centimetre. Work out the upper bound of a + b.
- 10.The decimal 0.272727... repeats the block 27 for ever. Write 0.27 recurring as a fraction in its simplest form.
- 11.Ava measures a metal rod and records its length as 15 cm, correct to the nearest centimetre. Ben measures the same rod and records its length as 14.8 cm, correct to the nearest 0.1 cm. Decide whether both records can be correct, and give a reason for your answer.
- 12.A space probe is 7.5 × 10⁸ km from Earth. Write this distance as an ordinary number.
- 13.Work out 3/4 − 5/12 exactly, giving your answer in its simplest form.
- 14.A shop buys boxes of pens for £4 each. It sells each box on to a school for £3 more than it paid, and charges an extra £2 delivery fee for the whole order. A school orders 5 boxes. Work out the total cost of the order.
- 15.In a music collection, the ratio of pop albums to rock albums is 5 : 3. Work out the number of rock albums as a fraction of the number of pop albums.
