- 1.Work out (−2)³ + (−3)² − (−4)

- 3.A country's population is 8,340,000, and it is estimated that 1,950,000 of them live in the capital city. By rounding each number to 1 significant figure, work out an estimate for the number of people who do not live in the capital city.
- 4.4ˣ = 64. Work out the value of x.
- 5.Work out 2 3/4 − 1 5/6. Give your answer as a fraction in its simplest form.
- 6.A rectangular field measures 19.6 m by 48.3 m. Work out an estimate for the area of the field, by rounding each length to 1 significant figure.
- 7.A car travels 180 km using 6 litres of fuel. Work out the car's fuel consumption in kilometres per litre, then work out how many kilometres it can travel on a full tank of 12 litres at this rate.
- 8.The length of a pencil is 8.4 cm, correct to 1 decimal place. Using L for the length of the pencil in centimetres, write down the error interval for L.
- 9.The diameter of an artificial silk fibre is 4 × 10⁻⁶ metres. One nanometre is 10⁻⁹ metres. Work out the diameter of the fibre in nanometres.
- 10.Write these numbers in order, starting with the largest: −0.6, 0.45, −0.15, 0.5, −0.09
- 11.A cycle route is 350 m long. A footpath runs alongside it for 3/7 of that length. Work out the length of the footpath.
- 12.A number is multiplied by 4, then 8 is added, giving the result 40. Work out the number.
- 13.Grace works out 7 × 99 by writing 99 as 100 − 1. Use her method to work out 7 × 99.
- 14.A grain of fine sand has a mass of 0.001 grams. Write this mass in standard form.
- 15.Work out 5/6 × 2/9, giving your answer in its simplest form.
