- 1.The decimal 0.2333... has one non-recurring digit (the 2) followed by a single recurring digit (the 3), so it can be written as 0.2 recurring 3. Let x = 0.2333... . Work out x as a fraction in its simplest form.
- 2.Write these decimals in order, starting with the smallest: 0.6, 0.55, 0.601, 0.5, 0.56
- 3.A rope is measured as 15 m, correct to the nearest metre. Write down the error interval for the true length, l, of the rope.
- 4.Work out 1 − 1/2 − 1/4 − 1/8 − 1/16. Give your answer as a fraction.
- 5.A choir has sopranos, altos and tenors in the ratio 6 : 4 : 5. What fraction of the choir is not tenors?
- 6.Write 90 as a product of its prime factors.
- 7.At a book fair the ratio of fiction books to non-fiction books is 4 : 5. Of the non-fiction books, 3/5 are about history. Work out the fraction of all the books at the fair that are history books.
- 8.Write 0.875 as a fraction in its simplest form.
- 9.A shortbread recipe uses flour and butter in the ratio 5 : 2. Yuki changes the recipe by doubling the amount of butter but keeping the amount of flour the same. Work out the fraction of the new mixture that is butter.
- 10.The two shorter sides of a right-angled triangle are √12 cm and √24 cm. Work out the exact length of the hypotenuse.
- 11.A school orders 187 packed lunches for a trip. Each packed lunch costs £4.85. The school has £900 to spend. By rounding each number to 1 significant figure, work out an estimate for the total cost and decide whether £900 is enough.
- 12.Work out an estimate for 588 ÷ 31, by rounding each number to 1 significant figure.
- 13.An allotment plot is divided into vegetables and flowers in the ratio 9 : 4. A third of the vegetable section is used for potatoes. What fraction of the whole plot is potatoes?
- 14.Write these three numbers in order, starting with the smallest: 3/5, 0.55, 58%
- 15.A plank of wood is 5 1/4 m long. Pieces of length 3/4 m are cut from it. Work out how many complete pieces of 3/4 m can be cut from the plank.
