- 1.A digital timer truncates every time to 1 decimal place. It shows a swimmer's time for one length as 12.3 seconds. Using t for the swimmer's actual time in seconds, write down the error interval for t.
- 2.A vending machine sells 4 types of crisps, 5 types of chocolate bar and 2 types of drink. Work out how many different combinations of one crisp packet, one chocolate bar and one drink can be bought.
- 3.The thickness of a sheet of card is 0.02384 cm. Write this thickness correct to 2 significant figures.
- 4.A number is divided by 5, then 6 is subtracted, giving the result −1. Work out the number.
- 5.In a class, 1/3 of the pupils are girls. There are 12 girls in the class. Work out how many pupils are in the class.
- 6.Five different books are placed in a row on a shelf. Work out how many different orders the five books can be placed in.
- 7.A café is planning its lunch menu. It will offer one soup from 3 choices and one sandwich from 4 choices, but the mushroom soup, one of the 3 soups, will only be served with the cheese sandwich, one of the 4 sandwiches, on a normal day. Work out how many different soup-and-sandwich combinations are available on a normal day.
- 8.Write these numbers in order, starting with the largest: −0.6, 0.45, −0.15, 0.5, −0.09
- 9.Work out the value of √(16 + 9)
- 10.In a school long jump competition Priya's jump is recorded as 3.8 m and Nadia's jump is recorded as 3.9 m, each correct to the nearest 0.1 m. Priya says she may have jumped further than Nadia. Decide whether Priya is right, and give a reason for your answer.
- 11.A cyclist travels 40 km, correct to the nearest 10 km, in a time of 3 hours, correct to the nearest hour. Work out the maximum possible average speed, in km/h.
- 12.Expand and simplify √3(2 + √12).
- 13.Work out √25 + 4² − 12 ÷ 3
- 14.A car travels 180 km using 6 litres of fuel. Work out the car's fuel consumption in kilometres per litre, then work out how many kilometres it can travel on a full tank of 12 litres at this rate.
- 15.Simplify (x⁻²)³, giving your answer as a fraction.
