- 2.To estimate the cost of buying 38.7 m of rope at £21.40 per metre, both numbers are first rounded to 1 significant figure. Work out the estimate.
- 3.Light travels at 3 × 10⁸ metres per second. Work out how far light travels in 2 × 10⁻⁶ seconds. Give your answer in standard form.
- 4.Work out √3 × √12, giving your answer as an integer.
- 5.Work out 1 1/2 ÷ 3/4 exactly, giving your answer in its simplest form.
- 6.A cyclist rides at a steady speed of 8 metres per second. Work out this speed in kilometres per hour.
- 7.Simplify (x⁻²)³, giving your answer as a fraction.
- 8.Robert is converting 0.999... (with the 9s recurring forever) into a fraction. He lets x = 0.999... . Multiplying by 10 gives 10x = 9.999... . Subtracting x from 10x gives 9x = 9, so x = 1. Which statement correctly explains this result?
- 9.A café sells ice cream in three flavours: vanilla, mango and pistachio. Isla buys a cone with two scoops, using two different flavours, one for the bottom scoop and one for the top scoop. Work out how many different cones she could buy.

- 12.Work out −(−3)⁴ + (−3)³
- 13.A circle has a radius of 3 cm. Which of these is the exact area of the circle?
- 14.Four students each estimate √70 without a calculator. Ben says: '8² = 64 and 9² = 81, and 70 is about a third of the way from 64 to 81, so √70 ≈ 8.3.' Chloe says: '8.5² = 72.25, which is close to 70 but a little too big, so I'll bring it down slightly to √70 ≈ 8.4.' Dan says: '9² = 81 is closer to 70 than 8² = 64 is, so √70 ≈ 8.9.' Ella says: '8² = 64 and 9² = 81, so I'll just take the midpoint of 8 and 9: √70 ≈ 8.5.' Given that √70 = 8.3666... to 4 decimal places, whose estimate is closest?
- 15.A recipe uses 0.625 kg of flour. Write this mass as a fraction of a kilogram, in its simplest form.
