- 1.Work out 3 1/5 + 1 2/3. Give your answer as a mixed number in its simplest form.
- 2.n is a whole number and 2 ≤ n < 6. Write down all the possible values of n.
- 3.In a science experiment, the temperature of a liquid is recorded as 18.6 °C, correct to the nearest 0.2 °C. Write down the error interval for the actual temperature, T °C.
- 4.Simplify √8 + √18, giving your answer in the form k√2.
- 5.Work out 3 + 4 × (−2).
- 6.A shape is made by joining a rectangle measuring 10 cm by 6 cm to a semicircle of diameter 6 cm along one of the rectangle's shorter sides. Work out the exact area of the shape, in terms of π.
- 7.A number is divided by 5, then 6 is subtracted, giving the result −1. Work out the number.
- 8.A van has a mass of 2,000 kg, correct to 1 significant figure. Using m for the mass of the van in kilograms, write down the error interval for m.
- 9.A board game has 5 different character pieces and 4 different colour tokens. The dragon piece can only be used with the gold token. Work out how many different combinations of one character piece and one colour token are possible.
- 10.√700 lies between which two consecutive integers?
- 11.A rectangular patio measures 90 cm by 120 cm. Ben wants to cover it exactly with identical square tiles, as large as possible, with no tiles cut. Work out the side length of the largest square tile he can use.
- 12.The distance from the Earth to the Moon is 384,000 km. Write this distance in standard form, in kilometres.
- 13.Four students each estimate √70 without a calculator. Ben says: '8² = 64 and 9² = 81, and 70 is about a third of the way from 64 to 81, so √70 ≈ 8.3.' Chloe says: '8.5² = 72.25, which is close to 70 but a little too big, so I'll bring it down slightly to √70 ≈ 8.4.' Dan says: '9² = 81 is closer to 70 than 8² = 64 is, so √70 ≈ 8.9.' Ella says: '8² = 64 and 9² = 81, so I'll just take the midpoint of 8 and 9: √70 ≈ 8.5.' Given that √70 = 8.3666... to 4 decimal places, whose estimate is closest?
- 14.Simplify ⁴√(16a⁸b¹²)
- 15.Work out 3.7 × 24.
