Answer key
- (d) £6705 — After the first year: £6400 × 1.08 = £6912. After the second year: £6912 × 0.97 = £6704.64, which rounds to £6705 (nearest pound). £6720 comes from treating the +8% and −3% changes as a single net +5% change applied to the original amount instead of applying each change in turn: £6400 × 1.05 = £6720. £6912 comes from applying only the first year's growth and stopping there, without applying the second year's fall. £7104 comes from adding the two percentages together as +11% and applying that to the original amount instead of applying each change to the correct starting amount in turn: £6400 × 1.11 = £7104.
- (a) 7 — The average rate of change of y with respect to x over an interval is the change in y divided by the change in x between its two endpoints — the gradient of the chord joining them, not a rate at a single point. At x = 1: 2 × 1 = 2, so y = 1 + 2 = 3. At x = 4: 2 × 4 = 8, so y = 16 + 8 = 24. The change in y is 24 − 3 = 21 and the change in x is 4 − 1 = 3, so the average rate of change is 21 ÷ 3 = 7. Reporting the change in y, 21, on its own is not a rate of change, because it has not been divided by the 3 units of x over which it happened. Reporting 3 is not a rate either — 3 is the width of the interval, and also the value of y at x = 1, and neither of those measures how fast y is changing. Subtracting in the wrong order gives −21 ÷ 3 = −7, the wrong sign. The average rate of change of y with respect to x over the interval is 7.
- (c) £840 — Method: find the total amount raised using the reverse percentage, then subtract the entry fees to find the donations. Working: £1,260 is 60% of the total, so the total is £1,260 ÷ 0.6, and subtracting the entry fees from this total leaves £840 raised through donations. Answer: £840. £2,100 comes from correctly finding the total amount raised but then forgetting to subtract the entry fees, giving the total instead of the donations alone. £504 comes from working out 40% of the entry fees themselves, £1,260 × 0.4 = £504, instead of first finding the total amount raised. £1,890 comes from treating £1,260 as 40% of the total instead of 60%, dividing by 0.4 to get a total of £3,150, and then subtracting the entry fees from that incorrect total.
- (d) 0.40 m/min — To estimate an instantaneous rate of change at a point without a diagram, use the gradient of a chord joining two points close to it, one on each side. At t = 9: 0.02 × 81 = 1.62, so h = 1.62 + 0.5 = 2.12. At t = 11: 0.02 × 121 = 2.42, so h = 2.42 + 0.5 = 2.92. The change in height is 2.92 − 2.12 = 0.80 and the change in time is 11 − 9 = 2, so the gradient of the chord is 0.80 ÷ 2 = 0.40. Reporting the change in height, 0.80, on its own is not a rate, because it has not been divided by the 2 minutes over which it happened. Using the chord from t = 0 (where h = 0.5) to t = 11 instead gives 2.92 − 0.5 = 2.42, and 2.42 ÷ 11 = 0.22, which is the average gradient over the whole 11 minutes, not the instantaneous rate at t = 10. Substituting t = 10 into the formula gives 0.02 × 100 + 0.5 = 2.50, which is the height of the water at that moment, not the rate at which the height is rising. The estimated instantaneous rate of change at t = 10 is 0.40 m/min.
- (a) £14224 — Value after 2 years: £15000 × 1.04 × 1.04 = £16224. Money left after buying the trailer: £16224 − £2000 = £14224. £14200 comes from treating the two 4% increases as a single flat 8% increase applied once instead of compounding: £15000 × 1.08 = £16200, and £16200 − £2000 = £14200. £13600 comes from applying the 4% increase only once, for 1 year instead of 2: £15000 × 1.04 = £15600, and £15600 − £2000 = £13600. £18224 comes from adding the £2000 instead of subtracting it: £16224 + £2000 = £18224.
- (b) £13,860 — Method: apply the first year's percentage decrease, then apply the second year's percentage decrease to the new value. Working: after the first year, the car is worth £17,500 × 0.88. Multiplying this result by 0.90 gives the value at the end of the second year, £13,860. Answer: £13,860. £13,650 comes from adding the two percentages together (12% + 10% = 22%) and applying a single 22% decrease, £17,500 × 0.78 = £13,650, instead of applying the decreases one after the other. £15,750 comes from applying only the second year's 10% decrease to the original price, forgetting the first year's decrease entirely, £17,500 × 0.90 = £15,750. £15,400 comes from applying only the first year's 12% decrease and stopping there, forgetting to apply the second year's decrease at all.
- (d) 35 — Method: in direct proportion the ratio y : x is the same for every pair, so find the constant and substitute the new value of x. Working: k = 20 ÷ 8 = 2.5, so y = 2.5x; when x = 14, y = 2.5 × 14 = 35. Answer: 35. The distractors: 26 comes from additive thinking — x rises by 6, so 6 is added to y — which would keep the difference constant rather than the ratio; 28 comes from rounding the constant 2.5 down to 2 and working out 2 × 14, which loses the half in the constant; 5.6 comes from using the constant upside down, 8 ÷ 20 = 0.4, and working out 0.4 × 14.
- (b) They are in inverse proportion, because x × y = 60 for both pairs. — Testing inverse proportion means checking that x × y is the same for every pair: 4 × 15 = 60 and 6 × 10 = 60, so the quantities are in inverse proportion. Saying they are not in inverse proportion because x + y differs uses addition, which is not the correct test. Saying they are not in inverse proportion because y ÷ x differs uses the test for direct proportion, and finding that it differs tells us nothing about inverse proportion. Saying x × y = 40 for both pairs is an arithmetic slip: 4 × 15 = 60, not 40.
- (b) 450.00 kg — 1 m³ = 100 × 100 × 100 = 1,000,000 cm³, so 0.5 m³ = 500,000 cm³. Mass = density × volume = 0.9 × 500,000 = 450,000 g. Converting to kilograms by dividing by 1000 gives 450,000 ÷ 1000 = 450.00 kg. Skipping the m³-to-cm³ conversion and multiplying 0.9 × 0.5 = 0.45 treats the volume as if it were already 0.5 cm³, giving 0.45 kg. Finding the mass correctly in grams, 450,000 g, but not converting to kilograms leaves 450000.00 kg, out by a factor of 1000. Using the area conversion factor of 10,000, as if converting m² to cm², instead of the volume factor of 1,000,000 gives 0.5 × 10,000 = 5,000 'cm³', and a mass of 0.9 × 5,000 = 4,500 g, which is 4.50 kg.
- (d) 36 mph — First convert 1 hour 30 minutes to hours: 30 minutes is half an hour, so the time is 1.5 hours. Then divide the distance by the time: 54 ÷ 1.5 = 36 mph. Reading 1 hour 30 minutes as 1.3 hours (writing the minutes after the decimal point instead of as a fraction of 60) gives 54 ÷ 1.3 ≈ 41.54 mph. Working out 54 ÷ 30 = 1.8 divides by the number of minutes only, ignoring the hour. Working out 54 × 1.5 = 81 multiplies by the time instead of dividing. The coach's average speed is 36 mph.
- (b) 15 — Find the multiplier connecting y to x: 10 ÷ 4 = 2.5. Then apply it to the new value of x: 2.5 × 6 = 15. Working out 10 + (6 − 4) = 12 adds the change in x straight onto y instead of scaling proportionally. Working out 10 × 6 = 60 multiplies the given y-value by the new x-value directly, without finding the multiplier first. Writing 10 keeps y the same as before, not realising it must change with x. When x = 6, y = 15.
- (d) 3 : 5 — Simplify the area ratio: 18 : 50 divides by 2 to give 9 : 25. Areas scale with the square of the length ratio, so take the square root of each part: the square root of 9 is 3, and the square root of 25 is 5, giving a side length ratio of 3 : 5. Giving 5 : 3 has the ratio the right way round for larger to smaller, not smaller to larger. Giving 9 : 25 is the simplified area ratio, without square-rooting it. Giving 18 : 50 is the area ratio before it has even been simplified.
- (c) 3 hours — Method: inverse proportion means speed × time is constant for the journey, so find that constant and divide it by the new speed. Working: 60 × 2 = 120, which is the distance in kilometres; at 40 km/h the time is 120 ÷ 40 = 3 hours. Answer: 3 hours. The distractors: 1.5 hours is the ratio of the speeds, 60 ÷ 40, given as a time instead of being used to scale the original 2 hours; 1 hour 20 minutes comes from treating time as directly proportional to speed, 2 × 40 ÷ 60, which has the slower train arriving sooner; 2 hours comes from finding the constant 120 and then dividing it by the original 60 km/h again, so the time never changes.
- (b) 35 N/m² — Pressure = force ÷ area. 84 ÷ 2.4 = 35 N/m². 201.6 N/m² comes from multiplying the force by the area instead of dividing (84 × 2.4). 81.6 N/m² comes from subtracting the area from the force (84 − 2.4) instead of dividing. 0.03 N/m² comes from dividing the area by the force instead of the force by the area (2.4 ÷ 84).
- (b) £76.00 — One part of the ratio is £47.50 ÷ 5 = £9.50. The school receives 8 parts, so its share is 9.50 × 8 = £76.00. Dividing £47.50 by 8 instead of 5, treating the charity's amount as if it were 8 parts, gives 47.50 ÷ 8 = 5.9375, then × 5 = £29.69. Adding the charity's amount to the school's amount instead of stopping at the school's own share gives the total collected, 9.50 × 13 = £123.50. Adding one part to the charity's amount instead of multiplying one part by 8 gives 47.50 + 9.50 = £57.00.
