Answer key
- (c) 250 miles — Find the distance travelled in 1 hour: 150 ÷ 3 = 50 miles. Multiply by 5 hours: 50 × 5 = 250 miles. Giving 300 miles doubles the original distance (150 × 2 = 300) using a scale factor of 2 instead of the correct 5 ÷ 3. Giving 200 miles adds only one extra hour's distance, 50, instead of the two extra hours actually needed (150 + 50 = 200, rather than 150 + 100). Giving 90 miles divides by the scale factor instead of multiplying (150 × 3 ÷ 5 = 90).
- (c) 4 — The gradient of a tangent at a point equals the instantaneous rate of change of y with respect to x at that point. A straight line's gradient is found from the change in y divided by the change in x between two points on it. Here the tangent passes through (1, 4) and (5, 20), so the change in y is 20 − 4 = 16 and the change in x is 5 − 1 = 4. The gradient is 16 ÷ 4 = 4. Stopping after finding the change in y, 16, without dividing it by the change in x, is not a gradient at all — that rise happened across 4 units of x, not 1. Adding the two changes instead of dividing one by the other gives 16 + 4 = 20, which is not how a gradient is found. Subtracting in the wrong order, (4 − 20) ÷ (5 − 1), gives −16 ÷ 4 = −4, the wrong sign. The instantaneous rate of change of y with respect to x at x = 3 is 4.
- (c) 2.5 — x : y = 2 : 5 means that for every matching pair of values, y ÷ x = 5 ÷ 2 = 2.5. So y = 2.5x, and comparing with y = kx gives k = 2.5. Dividing the other way round, 2 ÷ 5 = 0.4, gives x in terms of y — that is the constant for x = 0.4y, not for y = kx. Taking the y-part of the ratio on its own, 5, reads one number off the ratio instead of dividing the y-part by the x-part; 5 would only be right if the x-part were 1. Subtracting the two parts, 5 − 2 = 3, treats the ratio as a difference, but a ratio compares two quantities by multiplication, not by subtraction. The constant is k = 2.5.
- (b) 1:200000 — '1 cm represents 2 km' means 1 cm on the map is 2 km in real life. Convert 2 km into centimetres, the same unit as the 1: 2 km = 2000 m = 200 000 cm. So the scale is 1 : 200 000. Converting only as far as metres gives 1 : 2000 — the conversion to centimetres was never finished. Losing a zero in the conversion gives 1 : 20 000, ten times too small. Writing 1 : 2 without converting units at all compares 1 cm to 2 km directly, which is not a valid ratio since the units do not match.
- (d) 5:3:2 — German = 100% − 50% − 30% = 20%. The ratio 50 : 30 : 20 simplifies by dividing every part by 10 to give 5 : 3 : 2.
- (a) 10 — Since y is directly proportional to x², y = kx². Using x = 4, y = 32: 32 = k × 16, so k = 32 ÷ 16 = 2. The equation is y = 2x². When y = 200: x² = 200 ÷ 2 = 100, so x = 10, taking the positive root because the question states that x is positive. Stopping at x² = 100 without taking the square root leaves 100, not the value of x itself. Treating the relationship as if y were proportional to x itself gives k = 32 ÷ 4 = 8 and then x = 200 ÷ 8 = 25, which is a different relationship entirely. Multiplying by k instead of dividing when rearranging gives x² = 200 × 2 = 400 and x = 20, which is not this equation rearranged correctly. The value of x when y = 200 is 10.
- (d) 12 hours — Since time is inversely proportional to the number of installers, T = k/n. Using n = 4, T = 18: 18 = k ÷ 4, so k = 18 × 4 = 72. The equation is T = 72/n. When n = 6: T = 72 ÷ 6 = 12. Using the original number of installers instead of the new one gives T = 72 ÷ 4 = 18, the wrong value substituted. Treating more installers as needing more time, as if T were directly proportional to n, gives k = 18 ÷ 4 = 4.5 and then T = 4.5 × 6 = 27, the opposite relationship to the one described. Stopping at k = 72 and reporting it gives the time the job would take a single installer working alone — the constant still has to be divided by the new number of installers before it answers the question asked. With 6 installers, the job takes 12 hours.
- (c) 21% — Method: an increase of 10% is a multiplier of 1.1, and two successive increases are found by multiplying the multipliers. Working: 1.1 × 1.1 = 1.21, so the rent is 121% of the original, which is an increase of 21%. Answer: 21%. The distractors: 20% comes from adding the two percentages, which ignores that the second 10% is taken of a larger amount; 121% is the multiplier written as the change rather than the change itself; 11% comes from slipping in the multiplication and getting 1.11 instead of 1.21.
- (b) 250 g — Method: adding water changes the total mass but not the mass of salt, so find the salt, hold it fixed, use the new ratio to find the new total mass and subtract the mass already in the beaker. Working: 12:100 = x:500 gives 12 ÷ 100 × 500 = 60 g of salt; that 60 g must be 8% of the new mixture, so 8:100 = 60:y gives y = 60 ÷ 8 × 100 = 750 g; the water added is 750 − 500 = 250 g. Answer: 250 g. The distractors: 750 g is the mass of the diluted solution, given without taking away the 500 g that was in the beaker to start with; 60 g is the mass of salt, the quantity that stays the same, given instead of the mass of water; 20 g comes from treating the fall from 12% to 8% as 4% of the original 500 g, which measures a change in concentration as though it were a mass of water.
- (b) 3:2 — Write both fractions over a common denominator of 4: 3/4 stays as 3/4, and 1/2 = 2/4. Comparing the numerators gives the ratio 3 : 2. Getting 2 : 3 swaps the two parts round. Getting 3 : 1 comes from using the numerator of the first fraction and the original numerator of the second fraction (1) without converting to a common denominator. Getting 2 : 1 comes from using only the denominators, 4 and 2, and simplifying those instead of the numerators.
- (b) 5 litres — Method: adding water changes the total volume but adds no salt, so work out the volume of salt, then the total volume that makes that salt 20% of the mixture, then the extra water. Working: 30% of 10 litres is 0.3 × 10 = 3 litres of salt. For the same 3 litres to be 20% of the new mixture, the new total volume is 3 ÷ 0.2 = 15 litres. The water added is the extra volume, 15 − 10 = 5 litres. Answer: 5 litres. The distractors: 3 litres is the volume of salt in the solution, which is the first step and not what the question asks for; 15 litres is the total volume of the new mixture, which counts the 10 litres already in the container as water that was poured in; 2 litres comes from taking 20% of the original 10 litres, applying the new percentage to the old volume instead of to the new one.
- (b) 75 g — Method: split the total mass into the number of parts shown by the ratio, then find the mass of tin. Working: the ratio 7:3 has 7 + 3 = 10 parts, so one part is 250 ÷ 10 = 25 g, and the mass of tin is 3 × 25 = 75 g. So the alloy contains 75 g of tin. Distractor 175 g is the mass of copper, not tin. Distractor 125 g comes from splitting the alloy into two equal halves, ignoring the ratio. Distractor 25 g is the value of one part, found correctly but never multiplied by 3.
- (d) 3/2 — Work out the number of altos: 40% of 30 = 12. The rest are sopranos, so there are 30 − 12 = 18 sopranos. Form the fraction 18/12; both numbers share a factor of 6, so 18 ÷ 6 = 3 and 12 ÷ 6 = 2, giving 3/2. 2/3 comes from writing the fraction the wrong way round, as altos over sopranos (12/18). 3/5 comes from comparing the sopranos with the whole choir (18/30), instead of with the altos. 7/3 comes from miscalculating 30 − 12 as 28 instead of 18, then forming 28/12.
- (d) 4:1 — Write the ratio online : in-store using the numbers in the question: 180 : 45. Divide both parts by their highest common factor, 45, to give 4 : 1. (1:4 comes from writing the ratio the wrong way round, in-store : online. 3:1 comes from subtracting the in-store orders from the online orders, 180 − 45 = 135, and comparing that to the in-store orders, 135:45, instead of dividing. 4:5 comes from comparing the online orders to the total number of orders, 180:225.)
- (d) 20 km/h — Method: average speed = total distance ÷ total time, with the time written in hours. Working: 1 hour 30 minutes = 1.5 hours, and 30 ÷ 1.5 = 20. Answer: 20 km/h. The distractors: 45 km/h comes from multiplying 30 by 1.5 instead of dividing; 15 km/h comes from dividing by 2, as if the ride had taken 2 hours; 30 km/h comes from dividing by the whole hour only and ignoring the extra 30 minutes.
