Answer key
- (b) 3/10 — Work out the empty space: 500 − 350 = 150 litres. Form the fraction 150/500; both numbers share a factor of 50, so 150 ÷ 50 = 3 and 500 ÷ 50 = 10, giving 3/10. 7/10 comes from writing the fraction of the tank that is full (350/500), instead of the empty space. 1/2 comes from miscalculating 500 − 350 as 250 instead of 150. 3/7 comes from comparing the empty space with the water held (150/350), instead of with the tank's total capacity.
- (c) 1 : 4 — Convert to the same unit: 1.2 litres = 1200 ml, since 1 litre = 1000 ml. This gives the ratio 300 : 1200. Divide both parts by their highest common factor, 300, to get 1 : 4. Giving 3 : 12 divides by 100 only, which is a common factor but not the highest one. Giving 1 : 1.2 has not converted 1.2 litres into millilitres, so the two parts are not in the same unit. Giving 4 : 1 swaps the order, comparing water to concentrate instead of concentrate to water.
- (c) Average rate, t = 2 to 6, is −2°C/min — First find the temperature at each end of the interval. At t = 2, T = 80 − 6 × 2 + 0.5 × 2² = 80 − 12 + 2 = 70. At t = 6, T = 80 − 6 × 6 + 0.5 × 6² = 80 − 36 + 18 = 62. The average rate of change over the interval is the change in T divided by the change in t: 62 − 70 = −8, then −8 ÷ 4 = −2°C per minute, so the statement about the average rate is correct. The instantaneous rate at t = 6 is not −2: completing the square gives T = 0.5(t − 6)² + 62, so t = 6 is the turning point of the curve, where the tangent is horizontal and the rate is 0°C per minute — the reaction has stopped cooling by then. The instantaneous rate at t = 2 is not −2 either: a short chord centred on t = 2, from t = 1.9 (T = 70.405) to t = 2.1 (T = 69.605), gives −0.8 ÷ 0.2 = −4°C per minute, so the reaction is cooling twice as fast at the start of the interval as the average over it. Saying the temperature falls 2°C in total confuses the RATE, −2°C per minute, with a TOTAL drop, which is 70 − 62 = 8°C over the four minutes. Always check whether a figure is a rate, per minute, or a total change.
- (a) 3/4 — Write January's total over February's total: 360/480. Both numbers share a factor of 120, so dividing top and bottom by 120 gives 3/4. Choosing 4/3 comes from writing February's amount over January's amount, the wrong way round. Choosing 1/4 comes from finding the difference between the two months (480 − 360 = 120) and writing it over February's amount, instead of using January's amount. Choosing 3/7 comes from writing January's amount over the total received across both months (360 out of 840), instead of over February's amount alone.
- (c) 3 hours — Method: in inverse proportion the product of the two quantities is constant, and here that product is the distance. Working: 60 × 4 = 240 km, so at 80 km/h the time is 240 ÷ 80 = 3. Answer: 3 hours. The distractors: 5 hours 20 minutes comes from treating the relationship as direct, working out 4 × 80 ÷ 60; 2 hours 40 minutes comes from cutting the time by the fraction the speed rose by — the speed went up by one third, so the time was cut by one third — which is not how inverse proportion works; 4 hours comes from dividing the 240 km by the original speed of 60 km/h again instead of by the new speed.
- (b) 5/7 — The enlargement multiplier is 1.4, which as a fraction is 7/5. To reverse an enlargement, use the reciprocal of the multiplier: flip 7/5 to get 5/7. 7/5 comes from using the enlargement multiplier again, instead of reversing it. 3/5 comes from treating the reverse as 'give back the extra amount', working out 1 − (1.4 − 1) = 0.6, instead of using the reciprocal. 5/2 comes from ignoring the whole number in 1.4 and inverting only the decimal part, 0.4, as if it were the whole multiplier.
- (a) 20% — Method: percentage increase = increase ÷ original amount × 100. Working: the increase is 84 − 70 = 14 marks, and 14 ÷ 70 = 0.2, so 0.2 × 100 = 20. Answer: an increase of 20%. The distractors: 14% comes from quoting the 14 mark increase as though marks and per cent were the same thing; 17% comes from dividing the 14 by the new mean 84 instead of by the original 70, which gives 17% to the nearest per cent; 120% is the new mean written as a percentage of the old one, which is the whole of the new mean rather than the increase.
- (b) 1:1.6 — To write 5 : 8 in the form 1 : n, divide both parts by 5, the first number, so that it becomes 1: 5 ÷ 5 = 1 and 8 ÷ 5 = 1.6, giving 1 : 1.6. Dividing both parts by 8 instead gives 0.6 : 1 (5 ÷ 8 = 0.625, rounded to 0.6) — the first part is no longer 1, so this is not in the required form. Dividing 5 by 8 but writing the result after the 1 gives 1 : 0.6, which divides in the wrong direction: n must come from 8 ÷ 5, not 5 ÷ 8. A slip in the division 8 ÷ 5, rounding it to 1.5 instead of the correct 1.6, gives 1 : 1.5.
- (a) 8 cm — Method: a scale of 1 : n means the real distance is n times the distance on the map, so to go from the real distance back to the map distance, put both lengths in the same unit and then divide by the scale. Working: 1 km = 100 000 cm, so 8 km = 8 × 100 000 = 800 000 cm; 800 000 ÷ 100 000 = 8. Answer: 8 cm. The distractors: 800000 cm comes from converting the 8 km into centimetres and stopping there, so the division by the scale — the inverse operation the question asks for — is never done; 80 cm comes from taking a metre to be 1000 cm, which turns 8 km into 8 × 1000 × 1000 = 8 000 000 cm and gives 8 000 000 ÷ 100 000 = 80; 0.08 cm comes from taking a kilometre to be 1000 cm, which turns 8 km into 8000 cm and gives 8000 ÷ 100 000 = 0.08.
- (a) 6 — Method: for inverse proportion the product xy is the same for every pair, so find that product and use it to work back to the missing value. Working: xy = 2 × 15 = 30, so when x = 5 the equation 5y = 30 gives y = 30 ÷ 5 = 6. Answer: 6. The distractors: 37.5 comes from treating the pair as direct proportion and scaling y up with x, 15 × 5 ÷ 2, although in inverse proportion y falls as x rises; 30 is the constant product itself, given as a value of y rather than used to find one; 12 comes from additive thinking — x rises by 3, so 3 is taken off y — which would make the two quantities differ by a constant instead of multiplying to one.
- (a) 3/8, 41%, 0.43 — Method: convert every value to a decimal so they can be compared on the same scale, then order them. Working: 3/8 = 0.375, 41% = 0.41, and 0.43 stays as 0.43, so from smallest to largest the decimals are 0.375, 0.41, 0.43, giving the order 3/8, 41%, 0.43. Answer: 3/8, 41%, 0.43. The order 3/8, 0.43, 41% comes from comparing 0.43 and 41% as raw digits (43 versus 41) without converting 41% into the decimal 0.41 first, wrongly placing 0.43 before 41%. The order 0.43, 41%, 3/8 comes from placing the values in completely reversed order, from largest to smallest instead of smallest to largest. The order 41%, 0.43, 3/8 comes from ordering the values by their TYPE (percentage, then decimal, then fraction) rather than by their actual size.
- (c) £2743.60 — Each year the balance is multiplied by 1.03. After the first year: 4000 × 1.03 = 4120. After the second year: 4120 × 1.03 = 4243.60, so that is what Leah takes out. She then spends £1500 of it, which leaves 4243.60 − 1500 = 2743.60. She has £2743.60 left.
- (d) 3/5 — Convert both times to minutes: 2 hours 15 minutes = 135 minutes; 3 hours 45 minutes = 225 minutes. Put the train time over the bus time: 135/225. Divide both numbers by their highest common factor, 45: 135÷45 = 3, 225÷45 = 5, giving 3/5. (5/3 comes from writing the times the wrong way round. 2/5 comes from finding the difference, 225 − 135 = 90 minutes, and writing it as a fraction of the bus time, 90/225. 3/8 comes from comparing the train time to the total time for both journeys, 135/360.)
- (d) 60 km/h — Method: use the formula v = d ÷ t with the distance and time given. Working: 180 ÷ 3 = 60 km/h. So the average speed is 60 km/h. Distractor 540 km/h comes from multiplying the distance and time instead of dividing. Distractor 90 km/h comes from dividing by 2 instead of 3. Distractor 18 km/h comes from dividing by 10 instead of 3, a decimal-point slip.
- (d) The population is growing at 2500 people per year. — The gradient of a tangent to a graph gives the instantaneous rate of change of the quantity on the vertical axis with respect to the quantity on the horizontal axis, at that exact point — not the total change and not an average. Here the vertical axis is population in thousands and the horizontal axis is time in years, so the gradient is measured in thousands of people per year. A gradient of 2.5 means the population is growing at an instantaneous rate of 2.5 thousand people per year, and since P is measured in thousands, 2.5 × 1000 = 2500 people per year. This describes the rate of change at that instant, not the total increase over the 6 years and not an average population.
