Answer key
- (c) 9% — Method: a percentage concentration is the ratio of salt to solution written per 100 g, so scale each concentration to the mass it belongs to, add the two masses of salt, then scale the ratio of salt to mixture back to a denominator of 100. Working: 5:100 = x:400 gives 5 ÷ 100 × 400 = 20 g of salt, and 25:100 = y:100 gives 25 g of salt; the mixture holds 20 + 25 = 45 g of salt in 400 + 100 = 500 g of solution; 45:500 = 9:100. Answer: 9%. The distractors: 15% is the mean of 5% and 25%, which would only be right if the two masses were equal, and here one is four times the other; 21% comes from attaching the concentrations to the wrong masses, working out (400 × 25% + 100 × 5%) ÷ 500; 0.9% comes from working out 45 ÷ 500 = 0.09 and then moving the decimal point one place instead of two when writing the decimal as a percentage.
- (b) 1:200000 — '1 cm represents 2 km' means 1 cm on the map is 2 km in real life. Convert 2 km into centimetres, the same unit as the 1: 2 km = 2000 m = 200 000 cm. So the scale is 1 : 200 000. Converting only as far as metres gives 1 : 2000 — the conversion to centimetres was never finished. Losing a zero in the conversion gives 1 : 20 000, ten times too small. Writing 1 : 2 without converting units at all compares 1 cm to 2 km directly, which is not a valid ratio since the units do not match.
- (d) 1.5 — Method: the length scale factor is the square root of the area scale factor, not the area scale factor itself. Working: the area scale factor is 45 ÷ 20 = 2.25, and the square root of 2.25 is 1.5. Answer: 1.5. Nadia's answer, 2.25, is the AREA scale factor — she never took the square root to get back to the length scale factor. 4.5 comes from doubling the area scale factor instead of taking its square root. 0.67 comes from taking the square root in the wrong direction, finding the scale factor from the larger rug to the smaller rug instead of the other way round.
- (b) 1.00 litres — Total volume = 350 + 650 = 1000 cm³. Since 1000 cm³ = 1 litre, the smoothie is 1.00 litre. Using only the orange juice's 650 cm³ and converting that gives 0.65 litres, forgetting the mango juice entirely. Using only the mango juice's 350 cm³ gives 0.35 litres, forgetting the orange juice. Adding both volumes correctly to get 1000 cm³ but not converting to litres leaves the answer as 1000.00, which is the volume in the wrong unit.
- (c) 3 : 5 — If orange juice is 3/8 of the total, apple juice is the remaining 1 − 3/8 = 5/8. The ratio of orange to apple is therefore 3 : 5. Inverting gives 5 : 3, apple to orange instead of orange to apple. Using the denominator 8 as the second part of the ratio, 3 : 8, compares orange juice to the whole drink rather than to the apple juice alone. Pairing the total 8 with the apple fraction's numerator 5 gives 8 : 5, which mixes a whole-total figure with a part figure.
- (d) 3/5 — Convert both times to minutes: 2 hours 15 minutes = 135 minutes; 3 hours 45 minutes = 225 minutes. Put the train time over the bus time: 135/225. Divide both numbers by their highest common factor, 45: 135÷45 = 3, 225÷45 = 5, giving 3/5. (5/3 comes from writing the times the wrong way round. 2/5 comes from finding the difference, 225 − 135 = 90 minutes, and writing it as a fraction of the bus time, 90/225. 3/8 comes from comparing the train time to the total time for both journeys, 135/360.)
- (d) A falling curve that never touches either axis — Method: inverse proportion means the product of the two quantities is constant, so P = k ÷ Q; as Q grows P shrinks, and P can never reach zero because k divided by a number is never zero. Working: taking k = 12 as an example, the pairs (1, 12), (2, 6), (3, 4), (6, 2) and (12, 1) drop steeply at first and then flatten out, so the graph is a curve that approaches both axes without meeting either of them. Answer: a falling curve that never touches either axis. The distractors: 'a straight line through the origin' is the graph of direct proportion, P = kQ, which is the opposite relationship; 'a straight line with a negative gradient' is the commonest error, reading 'P falls as Q rises' as a straight line, but on such a line P would drop by the same amount for every increase in Q and would cross the horizontal axis into negative values; 'a straight line crossing the vertical axis above zero' is a relationship of the form P = mQ + c, in which P and Q are not proportional at all.
- (d) 4/3 — The amount of yellow paint is 0.75 times the amount of blue paint. As a fraction, 0.75 = 3/4, so yellow = 3/4 of blue. To write blue as a fraction of yellow, use the reciprocal: flip 3/4 to get 4/3. 3/4 comes from keeping the original fraction without inverting it. 1/4 comes from computing 1 − 3/4 = 1/4, which is not how a fraction reverses. 40/3 comes from converting 0.75 to a fraction as 75/1000 = 3/40 (misplacing the decimal point), then inverting that.
- (a) 2 — Since y is inversely proportional to x², y = k/x². Using x = 2, y = 8: 2² = 4, so 8 = k ÷ 4, giving k = 8 × 4 = 32. The equation is y = 32/x². When x = 4: 4² = 16, so y = 32 ÷ 16 = 2. Treating the relationship as inversely proportional to x itself, rather than to x², gives k = 8 × 2 = 16 and then y = 16 ÷ 4 = 4, a different relationship. Using x instead of x² in the new calculation gives y = 32 ÷ 4 = 8, skipping the square. Multiplying by x² instead of dividing by it gives y = 32 × 16 = 512, the wrong operation for an inverse relationship. When x = 4, y = 2.
- (a) 18/25 — First find the new number of rose bushes: 90 × 1.2 = 108 (a 20% increase multiplies by 1.2). Then write 108 over 150 and divide top and bottom by 6 to get 18/25. Choosing 3/5 comes from using the original 90 rose bushes without applying the 20% increase (90/150 = 3/5). Choosing 25/18 comes from writing the number of lavender bushes over the new number of rose bushes, the wrong way round. Choosing 3/25 comes from multiplying 90 by 0.2 instead of 1.2, finding only the increase (18) rather than the new total, then writing 18/150 = 3/25.
- (a) 8 cm — Method: a scale of 1 : n means the real distance is n times the distance on the map, so to go from the real distance back to the map distance, put both lengths in the same unit and then divide by the scale. Working: 1 km = 100 000 cm, so 8 km = 8 × 100 000 = 800 000 cm; 800 000 ÷ 100 000 = 8. Answer: 8 cm. The distractors: 800000 cm comes from converting the 8 km into centimetres and stopping there, so the division by the scale — the inverse operation the question asks for — is never done; 80 cm comes from taking a metre to be 1000 cm, which turns 8 km into 8 × 1000 × 1000 = 8 000 000 cm and gives 8 000 000 ÷ 100 000 = 80; 0.08 cm comes from taking a kilometre to be 1000 cm, which turns 8 km into 8000 cm and gives 8000 ÷ 100 000 = 0.08.
- (a) 35/32 — Work out each weekly total first. Last week: 5 × 7 = 35 hours. This week: 4 × 8 = 32 hours. Last week's total is being written as a fraction of this week's total, so last week goes on the top and this week goes on the bottom, giving 35/32. The two totals share no common factor, so the fraction cannot be cancelled. It is greater than 1, which says that Priya worked more hours last week than this week.
- (c) 5/7 — First find the number of children: 84 − 35 = 49. The question compares the adults with the children, not with everyone on the bus, so the denominator is 49 and the numerator is 35, giving 35/49. Both parts divide by 7: 35 ÷ 7 = 5 and 49 ÷ 7 = 7. In its simplest form the fraction is 5/7.
- (d) 1:4 — Convert 1.4 l to millilitres: 1.4 l = 1400 ml. The ratio is 350 : 1400. Divide both parts by 350: 350 ÷ 350 = 1 and 1400 ÷ 350 = 4, giving 1 : 4. Misreading 1.4 l as 14 (moving the decimal point) gives 350 : 14, which simplifies to 25 : 1 — a very different, implausible ratio. Dividing by 175 instead of 350 gives 2 : 8, which still shares a common factor of 2, so it is not fully simplified. Swapping the order gives 4 : 1, litres to millilitres the wrong way round.
- (c) 30 km — First convert 1 hour 15 minutes to hours: 15 minutes is a quarter of an hour, so the time is 1.25 hours. Then multiply by the speed: 24 × 1.25 = 30 km. Reading 15 minutes as 0.15 hours (writing the minutes after the decimal point instead of as a fraction of 60) gives 24 × 1.15 = 27.6 km. Working out 24 × 75 = 1800 multiplies by the number of minutes instead of converting to hours first. Working out 24 ÷ 1.25 = 19.2 divides by the time instead of multiplying. The cyclist travels 30 km.
