Answer key
- (d) 4/3 — The amount of yellow paint is 0.75 times the amount of blue paint. As a fraction, 0.75 = 3/4, so yellow = 3/4 of blue. To write blue as a fraction of yellow, use the reciprocal: flip 3/4 to get 4/3. 3/4 comes from keeping the original fraction without inverting it. 1/4 comes from computing 1 − 3/4 = 1/4, which is not how a fraction reverses. 40/3 comes from converting 0.75 to a fraction as 75/1000 = 3/40 (misplacing the decimal point), then inverting that.
- (c) 2.5 — x : y = 2 : 5 means that for every matching pair of values, y ÷ x = 5 ÷ 2 = 2.5. So y = 2.5x, and comparing with y = kx gives k = 2.5. Dividing the other way round, 2 ÷ 5 = 0.4, gives x in terms of y — that is the constant for x = 0.4y, not for y = kx. Taking the y-part of the ratio on its own, 5, reads one number off the ratio instead of dividing the y-part by the x-part; 5 would only be right if the x-part were 1. Subtracting the two parts, 5 − 2 = 3, treats the ratio as a difference, but a ratio compares two quantities by multiplication, not by subtraction. The constant is k = 2.5.
- (b) 2/5 — Method: a fraction taken 'of the total' has the whole batch as its denominator, so add the two masses first and then write the butter over that total. Working: the total mass is 450 g + 300 g = 750 g, so the fraction is 300/750; the highest common factor of 300 and 750 is 150, and 300 ÷ 150 = 2 while 750 ÷ 150 = 5. Answer: 2/5 of the batch. The distractors: 2/3 comes from comparing the butter with the flour, 300/450, a part-to-part fraction when the question asks for a part compared with the whole; 3/5 comes from writing the flour over the total, 450/750, which answers about the wrong ingredient; 3/2 comes from writing the flour over the butter, 450/300, which both uses the wrong denominator and reverses the order.
- (c) 45% — Method: adding water changes the total volume but not the amount of fruit juice, so find the juice, find the new total volume, and write the first as a percentage of the second. Working: 3 × 0.6 = 1.8 litres of fruit juice; the new volume is 3 + 1 = 4 litres; 1.8 ÷ 4 = 0.45, which is 45%. Answer: 45%. The distractors: 60% is the strength before the water goes in, and assumes that adding water leaves the strength unchanged; 15% comes from dividing the 60% by the 4 litres of mixture instead of dividing the 1.8 litres of juice by the 4 litres; 75% is the fraction of the new mixture that came out of the original jug, 3 litres out of 4, which ignores that only 60% of that 3 litres was juice.
- (a) 4 : 15 — Convert to the same unit first: 1.5 kg = 1500 g, since 1 kg = 1000 g. This gives the ratio 400 : 1500. Divide both parts by their highest common factor, 100, to get 4 : 15. Giving 40 : 150 divides by 10 only, which is not the highest common factor, so it is not fully simplified. Giving 15 : 4 swaps the order. Giving 4 : 1.5 has not converted 1.5 kg into grams, so the two parts are not measured in the same unit.
- (d) A falling curve that never touches either axis — Method: inverse proportion means the product of the two quantities is constant, so P = k ÷ Q; as Q grows P shrinks, and P can never reach zero because k divided by a number is never zero. Working: taking k = 12 as an example, the pairs (1, 12), (2, 6), (3, 4), (6, 2) and (12, 1) drop steeply at first and then flatten out, so the graph is a curve that approaches both axes without meeting either of them. Answer: a falling curve that never touches either axis. The distractors: 'a straight line through the origin' is the graph of direct proportion, P = kQ, which is the opposite relationship; 'a straight line with a negative gradient' is the commonest error, reading 'P falls as Q rises' as a straight line, but on such a line P would drop by the same amount for every increase in Q and would cross the horizontal axis into negative values; 'a straight line crossing the vertical axis above zero' is a relationship of the form P = mQ + c, in which P and Q are not proportional at all.
- (d) 3/5 — Convert both times to minutes: 2 hours 15 minutes = 135 minutes; 3 hours 45 minutes = 225 minutes. Put the train time over the bus time: 135/225. Divide both numbers by their highest common factor, 45: 135÷45 = 3, 225÷45 = 5, giving 3/5. (5/3 comes from writing the times the wrong way round. 2/5 comes from finding the difference, 225 − 135 = 90 minutes, and writing it as a fraction of the bus time, 90/225. 3/8 comes from comparing the train time to the total time for both journeys, 135/360.)
- (b) 1:1.6 — To write 5 : 8 in the form 1 : n, divide both parts by 5, the first number, so that it becomes 1: 5 ÷ 5 = 1 and 8 ÷ 5 = 1.6, giving 1 : 1.6. Dividing both parts by 8 instead gives 0.6 : 1 (5 ÷ 8 = 0.625, rounded to 0.6) — the first part is no longer 1, so this is not in the required form. Dividing 5 by 8 but writing the result after the 1 gives 1 : 0.6, which divides in the wrong direction: n must come from 8 ÷ 5, not 5 ÷ 8. A slip in the division 8 ÷ 5, rounding it to 1.5 instead of the correct 1.6, gives 1 : 1.5.
- (a) 8:1 — Multiply both parts of the ratio by 4 to clear the fraction: 2 × 4 = 8 and 1/4 × 4 = 1, giving 8 : 1. Getting 1 : 8 has the two parts the wrong way round. Getting 2 : 4 comes from writing down the denominator of the fraction (4) as the second part instead of multiplying through by it. Getting 8 : 4 comes from multiplying only the first part of the ratio by 4 and leaving the second part as the fraction's denominator.
- (b) 6 litres — Method: find the volume of the cuboid in cm³, then change cm³ into litres using 1 litre = 1000 cm³. Working: 30 × 20 × 10 = 6000 cm³, and 6000 ÷ 1000 = 6. Answer: 6 litres. The distractors: 60 litres comes from using 1 litre = 100 cm³; 600 litres comes from using 1 litre = 10 cm³; 0.6 litres comes from using 1 litre = 10 000 cm³.
- (a) 1.3 — The gradient of a distance-time graph gives the speed. Difference in speed = 4.5 − 3.2 = 1.3 km/h. A student who subtracts the speeds the wrong way round, 3.2 − 4.5, gets −1.3. A student who adds the two speeds instead of comparing them gets 7.7. A student who multiplies the two gradients gets 14.4.
- (c) Height rising at 2 m/s at t = 1.5 s — A tangent's gradient on a height-time graph is the instantaneous rate of change of height, in metres per second, so gradient 2 means the ball's height is increasing at 2 m/s at t = 1.5 s. Saying the height 'is 2 m' confuses the gradient, a rate, with the y-value on the graph, which is the ball's height itself. Saying the ball 'travelled 2 m from t = 1 to t = 2' treats the instantaneous gradient at one instant as if it were the total distance risen over a whole one-second interval, which is a different quantity found from two height readings, not from one tangent. Saying the speed 'is 2 m/s²' uses the wrong units — m/s² measures acceleration, the rate of change of speed, not speed itself. Always check that the units quoted match what a height-time graph's gradient can actually give you: metres per second.
- (c) 1 : 27 — The edge lengths are in the ratio 2 : 6, which simplifies to 1 : 3. Volumes scale with the cube of the length ratio, so the volume ratio is 1³ : 3³ = 1 : 27. Giving 1 : 3 uses the length ratio without cubing it. Giving 1 : 9 squares the length ratio, which is the rule for areas, instead of cubing it, which is the rule for volumes. Giving 27 : 1 has the ratio the right way round for larger to smaller, not smaller to larger as the question asks.
- (a) 1/9 — The ratio copper : tin is 9:1, so write tin over copper: 1/9. (9/1 comes from writing the ratio the wrong way round, copper over tin. 1/10 comes from comparing the tin to the total mass of the alloy, 1 part out of 10. 9/10 comes from comparing the copper to the total mass of the alloy, 9 parts out of 10.)
- (a) 70 km/h — Method: average speed for a whole journey is the total distance divided by the total time, not the mean of the separate speeds. Working: 3 × 80 = 240 km and 1 × 40 = 40 km, giving 280 km in 3 + 1 = 4 hours, so 280 ÷ 4 = 70. Answer: 70 km/h. The distractors: 60 km/h comes from taking the mean of 80 and 40, which would only be right if equal times were spent at each speed; 280 km/h is the total distance written with a speed unit, from forgetting to divide by the total time; 80 km/h comes from quoting the speed of the longer leg as the average for the whole journey.
