Answer key
- (c) £32 — First find the gradient: (26 − 14) ÷ (50 − 20) = 12 ÷ 30 = £0.40 per minute. Using the point (20, 14), the charge for 65 minutes is 14 + 0.40 × (65 − 20) = 14 + 18 = £32. Choosing £26 comes from treating the charge as directly proportional to the time, multiplying the gradient by 65 minutes and ignoring the fixed part of the charge (0.40 × 65 = 26). Choosing £40 comes from treating £14 as if it were the charge at 0 minutes, then adding the gradient multiplied by the full 65 minutes (14 + 0.40 × 65 = 40), instead of multiplying by the extra time past 20 minutes. Choosing £33.80 comes from assuming the charge is directly proportional to the minutes already known, scaling up from the point (50, 26) in the ratio 65:50 (65 ÷ 50 × 26 = 33.80).
- (b) 5/7 — The enlargement multiplier is 1.4, which as a fraction is 7/5. To reverse an enlargement, use the reciprocal of the multiplier: flip 7/5 to get 5/7. 7/5 comes from using the enlargement multiplier again, instead of reversing it. 3/5 comes from treating the reverse as 'give back the extra amount', working out 1 − (1.4 − 1) = 0.6, instead of using the reciprocal. 5/2 comes from ignoring the whole number in 1.4 and inverting only the decimal part, 0.4, as if it were the whole multiplier.
- (a) 2/3 — Put the laptop bag's mass over the school bag's mass: 2.4/3.6. Multiply both numbers by 10 to clear the decimals: 24/36. Divide both by their highest common factor, 12: 24÷12 = 2, 36÷12 = 3, giving 2/3. (3/2 comes from writing the masses the wrong way round. 1/3 comes from finding the difference in the masses, 3.6 − 2.4 = 1.2 kg, and writing it as a fraction of the school bag's mass, 1.2/3.6. 2/5 comes from comparing the laptop bag's mass to the total mass of both bags, 2.4/6.)
- (c) £478.40 — Method: apply the percentage increase, then apply the percentage decrease to the new price. Working: after the increase, the laptop costs £520 × 1.15. Multiplying this result by 0.80 gives the final price, £478.40. Answer: £478.40. £494 comes from combining the two percentages into a single net change (15% − 20% = −5%) and applying it directly, £520 × 0.95 = £494, instead of applying the two changes one after the other. £416 comes from applying only the 20% decrease to the original price, £520 × 0.80 = £416, forgetting the increase entirely. £598 comes from applying only the 15% increase and stopping there, forgetting to apply the decrease at all.
- (c) 1.2 — Add the parts of the ratio: 6 + 1 = 7. Divide the total amount by the number of parts: 8.4 ÷ 7 = 1.2 litres, which is the value of one part and also the amount of syrup, since syrup is 1 part. (7.2 litres is the amount of water, using 6 parts instead of 1. 1.4 comes from dividing 8.4 by 6 — the water's part of the ratio — instead of dividing by the total number of parts, 7. 0.84 comes from dividing 8.4 by 10 instead of by 7.)
- (d) 4:5 — Write the ratio pounds : dollars as 1 : 1.25. Multiply both parts by 4 to clear the decimal: 1 × 4 = 4 and 1.25 × 4 = 5, giving 4 : 5. (5:4 comes from writing the ratio the wrong way round, dollars to pounds. 1:1 comes from rounding 1.25 dollars down to the nearest whole dollar. 1:5 comes from multiplying only the dollars by 4 to clear the decimal and leaving the pounds as 1 — both parts of a ratio must be multiplied by the same number.)
- (a) 3 hours — Method: for a fixed pool the rate of flow multiplied by the time taken is constant, so multiplying the rate by a factor divides the time by that same factor. Working: tap B's rate is 2 times tap A's rate, so tap B's time is 6 ÷ 2 = 3 hours. Answer: 3 hours. The distractors: 12 hours comes from multiplying the time by 2 as well, which treats the time as directly proportional to the rate and has the faster tap taking longer; 4 hours comes from reading ‘twice as fast’ additively, as two hours quicker, and working out 6 − 2 instead of scaling the time by a factor of 2; 1.5 hours comes from applying the factor of 2 twice, halving 6 to 3 and then halving again.
- (c) Average rate, t = 2 to 6, is −2°C/min — First find the temperature at each end of the interval. At t = 2, T = 80 − 6 × 2 + 0.5 × 2² = 80 − 12 + 2 = 70. At t = 6, T = 80 − 6 × 6 + 0.5 × 6² = 80 − 36 + 18 = 62. The average rate of change over the interval is the change in T divided by the change in t: 62 − 70 = −8, then −8 ÷ 4 = −2°C per minute, so the statement about the average rate is correct. The instantaneous rate at t = 6 is not −2: completing the square gives T = 0.5(t − 6)² + 62, so t = 6 is the turning point of the curve, where the tangent is horizontal and the rate is 0°C per minute — the reaction has stopped cooling by then. The instantaneous rate at t = 2 is not −2 either: a short chord centred on t = 2, from t = 1.9 (T = 70.405) to t = 2.1 (T = 69.605), gives −0.8 ÷ 0.2 = −4°C per minute, so the reaction is cooling twice as fast at the start of the interval as the average over it. Saying the temperature falls 2°C in total confuses the RATE, −2°C per minute, with a TOTAL drop, which is 70 − 62 = 8°C over the four minutes. Always check whether a figure is a rate, per minute, or a total change.
- (b) t = 5 and t = 7 (closest, evenly spaced) — To estimate the instantaneous rate of change at t = 6, use the chord centred on t = 6 with the closest readings on either side, t = 5 and t = 7. The gradient of this chord is 15.4 − 17.5 = −2.1, then −2.1 ÷ 2 = −1.05 cm per minute. The interval t = 3 to t = 9 is also centred on t = 6 but is wider: 13.4 − 18.7 = −5.3, then −5.3 ÷ 6 ≈ −0.88 cm per minute — this brings in more of the curve's own change in steepness, so it is a worse estimate of the rate at the single instant t = 6. Using t = 6 and t = 7 only gives 15.4 − 16.6 = −1.2, then −1.2 ÷ 1 = −1.2 cm per minute, but this is not centred on t = 6 — it estimates the rate over (6, 7), not at t = 6 itself. Using t = 0 and t = 6 gives 16.6 − 20.0 = −3.4, then −3.4 ÷ 6 ≈ −0.57 cm per minute, the average rate for the whole first six minutes, not the rate at the instant t = 6. Always choose the chord that brackets the point as closely as possible.
- (b) 4 — Method: find the length scale factor by taking the cube root of the volume scale factor, then square it to get the area scale factor. Working: 8 = 2³, so the length scale factor is 2, and the area scale factor is 2² = 4. Answer: 4. 8 comes from using the volume scale factor itself as if it were the area scale factor. 64 comes from squaring the volume scale factor, 8² = 64, instead of first taking its cube root. 2 comes from correctly finding the length scale factor but then forgetting to square it.
- (c) m = 6c — Method: the whole is the sum of the parts in the ratio, and the cement is 1 part, so one part weighs c kg. Working: the mix has 5 + 1 = 6 parts, each of mass c kg, so the total mass is 6 × c, giving m = 6c. Answer: m = 6c. The distractors: m = 5c uses the 5 gravel parts as the multiplier and forgets that the cement is in the mix too, so it gives the mass of the gravel and not the total; m = c + 5 comes from reading the ratio as '5 more than' and adding, which treats a number of parts as a mass in kilograms; m = c/6 turns the relationship upside down, as though the total were shared into the cement rather than the cement multiplied up to the total.
- (b) 5:8 — The mix has 5 parts sand and 3 parts cement, so 5 + 3 = 8 parts in total. Sand to total is 5 : 8, and since the highest common factor of 5 and 8 is 1, this is already in its simplest form. Giving 5 : 3 answers sand to cement, not sand to the total mix. Giving 3 : 8 is cement to total, the wrong part of the mix. Giving 8 : 5 has the total and the sand swapped round.
- (a) 70 km/h — Method: average speed for a whole journey is the total distance divided by the total time, not the mean of the separate speeds. Working: 3 × 80 = 240 km and 1 × 40 = 40 km, giving 280 km in 3 + 1 = 4 hours, so 280 ÷ 4 = 70. Answer: 70 km/h. The distractors: 60 km/h comes from taking the mean of 80 and 40, which would only be right if equal times were spent at each speed; 280 km/h is the total distance written with a speed unit, from forgetting to divide by the total time; 80 km/h comes from quoting the speed of the longer leg as the average for the whole journey.
- (c) 3 : 4 — Method: a fraction compares a part with the whole, while this ratio compares one part with the other part, so find the fraction that is black before writing the ratio. Working: if 3/7 are blue then the black pens make up 7/7 − 3/7 = 4/7 of the box, so out of every 7 pens 3 are blue and 4 are black, and blue : black = 3 : 4. Answer: 3 : 4. The distractors: 3 : 7 comes from reading the numerator and the denominator of 3/7 straight off as the two parts, which compares the blue pens with the whole box rather than with the black pens; 4 : 3 comes from writing the black pens before the blue pens, reversing the order asked for; 4 : 7 is the same numerator-and-denominator reading applied to the black fraction 4/7, again comparing a part with the whole box.
- (a) 4 — Method: find the constant of proportionality from the pair given, write the equation, then substitute the new value of y and solve. Working: k = 21 ÷ 7 = 3, so y = 3x; putting y = 12 gives 12 = 3x, and x = 12 ÷ 3 = 4. Answer: 4. The distractors: 36 comes from multiplying by the constant instead of dividing by it, 12 × 3, which is the proportion set up upside down; 84 comes from multiplying 12 by the 7 from the first pair, using a value of x as though it were the constant; 9 comes from working out 12 − 3, treating the equation as y = x + 3 rather than y = 3x.
