Answer key
- (a) 3/4 — Write January's total over February's total: 360/480. Both numbers share a factor of 120, so dividing top and bottom by 120 gives 3/4. Choosing 4/3 comes from writing February's amount over January's amount, the wrong way round. Choosing 1/4 comes from finding the difference between the two months (480 − 360 = 120) and writing it over February's amount, instead of using January's amount. Choosing 3/7 comes from writing January's amount over the total received across both months (360 out of 840), instead of over February's amount alone.
- (c) 1 : 4 — Convert to the same unit: 1.2 litres = 1200 ml, since 1 litre = 1000 ml. This gives the ratio 300 : 1200. Divide both parts by their highest common factor, 300, to get 1 : 4. Giving 3 : 12 divides by 100 only, which is a common factor but not the highest one. Giving 1 : 1.2 has not converted 1.2 litres into millilitres, so the two parts are not in the same unit. Giving 4 : 1 swaps the order, comparing water to concentrate instead of concentrate to water.
- (c) £450 — Method: use the equal ratios 4:5 = 200:x to find Grace's savings, then add the two amounts. Working: Noah's £200 is 4 parts, so one part is £200 ÷ 4 = £50; Grace has 5 parts, so 5 × £50 = £250; altogether £200 + £250 = £450. Answer: £450. The distractors: £250 is Grace's savings on their own, which is the middle step rather than the total the question asks for; £360 comes from reading £200 as the 5 parts instead of the 4, giving one part of £40 and a total of 9 × £40; £400 comes from doubling £200, which treats the two savings as equal and ignores the ratio altogether.
- (d) Profit is decreasing by £10 per £1 rise in price. — The gradient of a tangent gives the instantaneous rate of change of profit with respect to price, found from the change in profit divided by the change in price between two points on the tangent. Here the tangent passes through (12, 540) and (18, 480), so the change in profit is 480 − 540 = −60 and the change in price is 18 − 12 = 6. The gradient is −60 ÷ 6 = −10. A negative gradient means profit is decreasing as price increases, so profit is decreasing at an instantaneous rate of £10 for every £1 rise in price. Subtracting the profits in the wrong order, 540 − 480 = 60, and dividing by the same change in price, 60 ÷ 6 = 10, gives a positive value and the wrong direction — profit is not increasing at £15. Stopping after finding only the change in profit, 480 − 540 = −60, without dividing by the change in price, is not a rate at all. Reading off the change in price, 6, and calling it the rate gives £6 per £1 rise in price, but 6 is only the width of the price interval — it is not a change in profit at all, and profit falls across that interval, so the direction is wrong too. The instantaneous rate of change of profit with respect to price at £15 is a decrease of £10 per £1 rise in price.
- (c) 3 hours — Method: in inverse proportion the product of the two quantities is constant, and here that product is the distance. Working: 60 × 4 = 240 km, so at 80 km/h the time is 240 ÷ 80 = 3. Answer: 3 hours. The distractors: 5 hours 20 minutes comes from treating the relationship as direct, working out 4 × 80 ÷ 60; 2 hours 40 minutes comes from cutting the time by the fraction the speed rose by — the speed went up by one third, so the time was cut by one third — which is not how inverse proportion works; 4 hours comes from dividing the 240 km by the original speed of 60 km/h again instead of by the new speed.
- (a) 8 cm — Method: a scale of 1 : n means the real distance is n times the distance on the map, so to go from the real distance back to the map distance, put both lengths in the same unit and then divide by the scale. Working: 1 km = 100 000 cm, so 8 km = 8 × 100 000 = 800 000 cm; 800 000 ÷ 100 000 = 8. Answer: 8 cm. The distractors: 800000 cm comes from converting the 8 km into centimetres and stopping there, so the division by the scale — the inverse operation the question asks for — is never done; 80 cm comes from taking a metre to be 1000 cm, which turns 8 km into 8 × 1000 × 1000 = 8 000 000 cm and gives 8 000 000 ÷ 100 000 = 80; 0.08 cm comes from taking a kilometre to be 1000 cm, which turns 8 km into 8000 cm and gives 8000 ÷ 100 000 = 0.08.
- (d) 25 minutes — Method: find the time for one kilometre, then multiply by the number of kilometres — the unitary method with a rate. Working: 10 ÷ 2 = 5 minutes per km, and 5 × 5 = 25. Answer: 25 minutes. The distractors: 20 minutes comes from multiplying the 10 minutes by 2, the distance in the given rate, instead of by the scale factor 2.5; 50 minutes comes from multiplying 10 by 5, treating the 10 minutes as the time for a single kilometre; 15 minutes comes from adding the 5 km on to the 10 minutes, adding quantities that are not the same kind.
- (b) 12 — Since y is directly proportional to √x, y = k√x. Using x = 4, y = 8: √4 = 2, so 8 = k × 2, giving k = 8 ÷ 2 = 4. The equation is y = 4√x. When x = 9: √9 = 3, so y = 4 × 3 = 12. Treating the relationship as if y were proportional to x itself, rather than to √x, gives k = 8 ÷ 4 = 2 and then y = 2 × 9 = 18, which is a different relationship. Multiplying k by the new x-value instead of by its square root gives y = 4 × 9 = 36, skipping the square root altogether. Reporting √9 on its own, without multiplying by k, gives only 3, not the value of y. When x = 9, y = 12.
- (d) 400 — The area scale factor is the length scale factor squared: 20² = 400, so the real car's surface area is 400 times the model's. 20 comes from using the length scale factor itself, without squaring it. 8000 comes from cubing the length scale factor (20³), instead of squaring it — cubing is the rule for volume, not area. 40 comes from doubling the length scale factor (2 × 20), instead of squaring it.
- (a) 4 : 15 — Convert to the same unit first: 1.5 kg = 1500 g, since 1 kg = 1000 g. This gives the ratio 400 : 1500. Divide both parts by their highest common factor, 100, to get 4 : 15. Giving 40 : 150 divides by 10 only, which is not the highest common factor, so it is not fully simplified. Giving 15 : 4 swaps the order. Giving 4 : 1.5 has not converted 1.5 kg into grams, so the two parts are not measured in the same unit.
- (c) 1 : 3 — n : P = 15 : 45. Dividing both parts by their highest common factor, 15, gives 1 : 3. Inverting the ratio, 3 : 1, swaps profit and number of items. Dividing only the n-part by 15, getting 1, but leaving the P-part as 45 gives 1 : 45 — only one side has been simplified. Dividing only the P-part by 15, getting 3, but leaving the n-part as 15 gives 15 : 3, the opposite partial mistake.
- (b) 1:1.6 — To write 5 : 8 in the form 1 : n, divide both parts by 5, the first number, so that it becomes 1: 5 ÷ 5 = 1 and 8 ÷ 5 = 1.6, giving 1 : 1.6. Dividing both parts by 8 instead gives 0.6 : 1 (5 ÷ 8 = 0.625, rounded to 0.6) — the first part is no longer 1, so this is not in the required form. Dividing 5 by 8 but writing the result after the 1 gives 1 : 0.6, which divides in the wrong direction: n must come from 8 ÷ 5, not 5 ÷ 8. A slip in the division 8 ÷ 5, rounding it to 1.5 instead of the correct 1.6, gives 1 : 1.5.
- (d) 500 ml — Varnish covers a surface, so the amount needed scales with the area scale factor, which is the square of the length scale factor. The length scale factor is 50 ÷ 20 = 2.5, so the area scale factor is 2.5 × 2.5 = 6.25. The varnish needed for the larger statue is 80 × 6.25 = 500 ml. Using 2.5 on its own would scale a length, not a surface.
- (d) 12 — First find the y-values at the two ends of the chord. At x = 2, y = 2 × 2² + 5 = 2 × 4 + 5 = 8 + 5 = 13. At x = 4, y = 2 × 4² + 5 = 2 × 16 + 5 = 32 + 5 = 37. The gradient of the chord is the change in y divided by the change in x: 37 − 13 = 24, then 24 ÷ (4 − 2) = 24 ÷ 2 = 12. Stopping after finding the change in y and not dividing by the change in x gives 24, which is not a gradient at all. Inverting the fraction, change in x divided by change in y, gives 2 ÷ 24 ≈ 0.08. Averaging the two y-values instead of finding the change between them gives (13 + 37) ÷ 2 = 50 ÷ 2 = 25. A gradient is always change in y over change in x — never the other way round, and never a single y-value.
- (a) 1.3 — The gradient of a distance-time graph gives the speed. Difference in speed = 4.5 − 3.2 = 1.3 km/h. A student who subtracts the speeds the wrong way round, 3.2 − 4.5, gets −1.3. A student who adds the two speeds instead of comparing them gets 7.7. A student who multiplies the two gradients gets 14.4.
