Answer key
- (a) 1000m — Method: kilograms are a smaller unit than tonnes, so change tonnes into kilograms by multiplying by 1000. Working: m tonnes = m × 1000 kg = 1000m kg. So the expression is 1000m. Distractor m/1000 comes from dividing by 1000 instead of multiplying, which would make the number of kilograms smaller than the number of tonnes, the wrong way round. Distractor 1000 + m comes from adding the conversion factor instead of multiplying by it. Distractor m − 1000 comes from subtracting the conversion factor instead of multiplying by it.
- (b) −1% — Method: write each change as a multiplier and multiply them. A 10% fall is × 0.9 and a 10% rise is × 1.1. Working: 0.9 × 1.1 = 0.99, so the final price is 99% of the original, which is 1% less. Answer: an overall change of −1%. The distractors: 0% comes from assuming a 10% fall and a 10% rise cancel — they do not, because the rise is 10% of a smaller amount; +1% has the size right but the sign wrong, from reading the multiplier 0.99 as 1% above 1 instead of 1% below it; −2% comes from finding the 1% fall and then counting it once for each of the two changes.
- (c) 24p — Method: change the price to pence, then find what one tenth of 1 kg costs, since 100 g is one tenth of 1 kg. Working: £2.40 = 240p per kg, and 240 ÷ 10 = 24p per 100 g. So the cost is 24p per 100 g. Distractor 2.4p comes from dividing by 100 instead of 10. Distractor 2400p comes from multiplying by 10 instead of dividing. Distractor 240p comes from using the price per kg without scaling it down to 100 g.
- (d) 3/2 — Work out the number of altos: 40% of 30 = 12. The rest are sopranos, so there are 30 − 12 = 18 sopranos. Form the fraction 18/12; both numbers share a factor of 6, so 18 ÷ 6 = 3 and 12 ÷ 6 = 2, giving 3/2. 2/3 comes from writing the fraction the wrong way round, as altos over sopranos (12/18). 3/5 comes from comparing the sopranos with the whole choir (18/30), instead of with the altos. 7/3 comes from miscalculating 30 − 12 as 28 instead of 18, then forming 28/12.
- (c) £2743.60 — Each year the balance is multiplied by 1.03. After the first year: 4000 × 1.03 = 4120. After the second year: 4120 × 1.03 = 4243.60, so that is what Leah takes out. She then spends £1500 of it, which leaves 4243.60 − 1500 = 2743.60. She has £2743.60 left.
- (d) 75 pages — Method: find the number of pages printed in one minute, then scale up to 10 minutes. Working: 45 ÷ 6 = 7.5 pages per minute, so 7.5 × 10 = 75 pages. Answer: 75 pages. 27 pages comes from using the ratio upside down, 45 × 6 ÷ 10, instead of finding the rate per minute first. 55 pages comes from simply adding the extra minutes, 10, onto the original number of pages, 45. 70 pages comes from rounding the rate down to 7 pages per minute before multiplying by 10, instead of using the exact rate of 7.5.
- (c) 36 cm — A perimeter is built from lengths, so it is multiplied by the length scale factor and not by the square of it. The scale factor from the smaller rectangle to the larger one is 10 ÷ 5 = 2. The larger perimeter is therefore 18 × 2 = 36 cm.
- (a) It's an average over 20 days, which may miss the day-5 rate. — Method: a chord's gradient is the AVERAGE rate of change across the whole interval it spans; it only closely approximates the INSTANTANEOUS rate of change at a point inside that interval when the rate of change is roughly constant across the interval, which usually means the interval needs to be short. Working: here the chord spans 20 days while the point of interest, t = 5, is only a quarter of the way along it, so if the reservoir's level rose or fell at different rates over that time, the chord's gradient will not be close to the true gradient of the curve at t = 5 — this is the correct reason. Claiming the chord's gradient needs the water level at every day in between is wrong: a chord's gradient needs only the two endpoint values, at t = 0 and t = 20. Claiming a chord can only estimate the rate at its own endpoints is wrong: a chord between two points can be used to estimate the instantaneous rate of change at any point inside the interval, including one that is not an endpoint — that is exactly the technique being used here, and it is the SIZE of the interval that makes the estimate poor, not the fact that t = 5 is an interior point. Claiming the units do not match is wrong: the chord's gradient and the instantaneous rate of change are both measured in metres per day, so the units are the same. A chord is only a good estimate of an instantaneous rate when the interval it spans is short enough that the rate does not change much within it — always check how long the interval is compared with how far it is to the point you actually want.
- (a) 4:3 — Multiply both parts by the lowest common denominator, 6: (2/3) × 6 = 4 and (1/2) × 6 = 3, giving the ratio 4 : 3, which is already in simplest form.
- (a) 10 — Since y is directly proportional to x², y = kx². Using x = 4, y = 32: 32 = k × 16, so k = 32 ÷ 16 = 2. The equation is y = 2x². When y = 200: x² = 200 ÷ 2 = 100, so x = 10, taking the positive root because the question states that x is positive. Stopping at x² = 100 without taking the square root leaves 100, not the value of x itself. Treating the relationship as if y were proportional to x itself gives k = 32 ÷ 4 = 8 and then x = 200 ÷ 8 = 25, which is a different relationship entirely. Multiplying by k instead of dividing when rearranging gives x² = 200 × 2 = 400 and x = 20, which is not this equation rearranged correctly. The value of x when y = 200 is 10.
- (c) 9:15:21 — 6 : 10 : 14 simplifies to 3 : 5 : 7 (divide every part by 2). Multiplying every part of 3 : 5 : 7 by 3 gives 9 : 15 : 21, so 9 : 15 : 21 is equivalent to 6 : 10 : 14. Adding 2 to every part of 6 : 10 : 14 gives 8 : 12 : 16, which is not equivalent — ratios are equivalent when every part is multiplied by the same number, not when the same number is added to every part. Doubling only the first two parts, 6 × 2 = 12 and 10 × 2 = 20, but leaving the third part unchanged at 14, gives 12 : 20 : 14 — a scaling applied to two parts and not the third. Cancelling the first two parts correctly, 6 ÷ 2 = 3 and 10 ÷ 2 = 5, then treating the three numbers as a sequence and making the third part the sum of the first two, 3 + 5 = 8, gives 3 : 5 : 8 — the third part was never divided by 2 at all.
- (a) 5:3 — Divide both prices by their highest common factor, 3: 15 ÷ 3 = 5 and 9 ÷ 3 = 3, giving the ratio 5:3. Choosing 3:5 comes from writing the ratio the wrong way round, as child price to adult price. Choosing 2:3 comes from using the difference between the two prices (15 − 9 = 6) as the first part of the ratio instead of the adult price, then simplifying 6:9 by dividing by 3. Choosing 5:8 comes from comparing the adult price with the total cost of both tickets (£15 out of £24) instead of comparing it with the child price.
- (c) 920 kg/m³ — Convert each unit in turn. Mass: 1 g = 0.001 kg. Volume: 1 m³ = 100 × 100 × 100 = 1 000 000 cm³. So a density of 0.92 g per cm³ is 0.92 × 1 000 000 = 920 000 g in every cubic metre, and 920 000 g = 920 000 × 0.001 = 920 kg. The two conversions leave a single factor of 1 000 000 × 0.001 = 1000, so in one step multiply g/cm³ by 1000: 0.92 × 1000 = 920 kg/m³. Multiplying by 100 instead of 1000 gives 92 kg/m³, using the factor for 1 m² rather than 1 m³ of volume. Multiplying by 10 instead of 1000 gives 9.2 kg/m³, moving the decimal point one place for a conversion that moves it three. Dividing by 1000 instead of multiplying gives 0.00092 kg/m³, going the wrong way between the units — a kilogram is heavier than a gram, but a cubic metre is a million times bigger than a cubic centimetre, so the number must get larger, not smaller. The liquid's density is 920 kg/m³.
- (a) £102 — Method: find the value of one part of the ratio, then work out each group's share before comparing them. Working: the ratio 5:2 has 5 + 2 = 7 parts, so one part is £238 ÷ 7 = £34. Adults donate 5 × £34 = £170 and children donate 2 × £34 = £68, so adults donate £170 − £68 = £102 more than children. So the difference is £102. Distractor £68 is only the children's donation, without finding the difference. Distractor £170 is only the adults' donation, without finding the difference. Distractor £136 comes from doubling the children's donation instead of subtracting it from the adults' donation.
- (c) 16 cm — Corresponding sides of similar triangles are all in the same ratio. Use the pair whose lengths are both known: the scale factor from triangle ABC to triangle PQR is 12 ÷ 6 = 2. Since QR corresponds to BC, multiply BC by that scale factor: 8 × 2 = 16, so QR = 16 cm.
