Answer key
- (a) 20 people/year — The gradient of a tangent to a graph at a point equals the instantaneous rate of change of the quantity there. A straight line's gradient is the change in the vertical value divided by the change in the horizontal value between two points on it. Here the tangent passes through (2, 180) and (6, 260), so the change in population is 260 − 180 = 80 and the change in time is 6 − 2 = 4. The gradient is 80 ÷ 4 = 20. Reporting the change in population, 80, on its own is not a rate, because that growth happened over 4 years and has not been divided by them. Adding the two changes instead of dividing gives 80 + 4 = 84, which is not a rate. Subtracting the coordinates in the wrong order, (180 − 260) ÷ (6 − 2), gives −80 ÷ 4 = −20, the wrong sign. The instantaneous rate of change of the population at t = 4 is 20 people per year.
- (c) 9:15:21 — 6 : 10 : 14 simplifies to 3 : 5 : 7 (divide every part by 2). Multiplying every part of 3 : 5 : 7 by 3 gives 9 : 15 : 21, so 9 : 15 : 21 is equivalent to 6 : 10 : 14. Adding 2 to every part of 6 : 10 : 14 gives 8 : 12 : 16, which is not equivalent — ratios are equivalent when every part is multiplied by the same number, not when the same number is added to every part. Doubling only the first two parts, 6 × 2 = 12 and 10 × 2 = 20, but leaving the third part unchanged at 14, gives 12 : 20 : 14 — a scaling applied to two parts and not the third. Cancelling the first two parts correctly, 6 ÷ 2 = 3 and 10 ÷ 2 = 5, then treating the three numbers as a sequence and making the third part the sum of the first two, 3 + 5 = 8, gives 3 : 5 : 8 — the third part was never divided by 2 at all.
- (c) 16% — Method: scale each concentration to its own mass to find the salt it contains, add the two masses of salt, then write the ratio of salt to mixture per 100 g. Working: 10:100 = x:300 gives 30 g of salt, and 25:100 = y:200 gives 50 g of salt; the mixture holds 30 + 50 = 80 g of salt in 300 + 200 = 500 g of solution; 80:500 = 16:100. Answer: 16%. The distractors: 17.5% is the mean of 10% and 25%, which ignores that there is more of the weaker solution than of the stronger one; 19% comes from swapping the two concentrations over, working out (300 × 25% + 200 × 10%) ÷ 500; 26.7% comes from dividing the 80 g of salt by the 300 g of the first solution rather than by the 500 g of mixture.
- (d) 132 — Method: find the value of one part of the ratio, use it to find Leo's pages, then add both amounts together. Working: 84 ÷ 7 = 12 (value of one part). Leo's pages = 12 × 4 = 48. Total = 84 + 48 = 132. Wrong options: 48 gives only Leo's pages and forgets to add Mia's; 147 comes from reversing the ratio parts (84 ÷ 4 × 7 = 147) and stopping there; 231 comes from reversing the ratio parts and then adding Mia's pages (84 + 147).
- (a) 2 — Since y is inversely proportional to x², y = k/x². Using x = 2, y = 8: 2² = 4, so 8 = k ÷ 4, giving k = 8 × 4 = 32. The equation is y = 32/x². When x = 4: 4² = 16, so y = 32 ÷ 16 = 2. Treating the relationship as inversely proportional to x itself, rather than to x², gives k = 8 × 2 = 16 and then y = 16 ÷ 4 = 4, a different relationship. Using x instead of x² in the new calculation gives y = 32 ÷ 4 = 8, skipping the square. Multiplying by x² instead of dividing by it gives y = 32 × 16 = 512, the wrong operation for an inverse relationship. When x = 4, y = 2.
- (d) 60 km/h — Method: use the formula v = d ÷ t with the distance and time given. Working: 180 ÷ 3 = 60 km/h. So the average speed is 60 km/h. Distractor 540 km/h comes from multiplying the distance and time instead of dividing. Distractor 90 km/h comes from dividing by 2 instead of 3. Distractor 18 km/h comes from dividing by 10 instead of 3, a decimal-point slip.
- (d) 1:4 — Convert 1.4 l to millilitres: 1.4 l = 1400 ml. The ratio is 350 : 1400. Divide both parts by 350: 350 ÷ 350 = 1 and 1400 ÷ 350 = 4, giving 1 : 4. Misreading 1.4 l as 14 (moving the decimal point) gives 350 : 14, which simplifies to 25 : 1 — a very different, implausible ratio. Dividing by 175 instead of 350 gives 2 : 8, which still shares a common factor of 2, so it is not fully simplified. Swapping the order gives 4 : 1, litres to millilitres the wrong way round.
- (c) 30 — Method: use y = kx and find k from the given pair of values, then substitute x = 12. Working: k = 20 ÷ 8 = 2.5, so y = 2.5 × 12 = 30. Answer: 30. 24 comes from treating the relationship as additive, adding the increase in x (12 − 8 = 4) straight onto y (20 + 4 = 24), instead of multiplying by k. 14.5 comes from finding k correctly (2.5) but then adding it to x instead of multiplying (12 + 2.5 = 14.5). 4.8 comes from finding k upside down, 8 ÷ 20 = 0.4, and multiplying by x: 12 × 0.4 = 4.8.
- (a) 3 hours — Method: for a fixed pool the rate of flow multiplied by the time taken is constant, so multiplying the rate by a factor divides the time by that same factor. Working: tap B's rate is 2 times tap A's rate, so tap B's time is 6 ÷ 2 = 3 hours. Answer: 3 hours. The distractors: 12 hours comes from multiplying the time by 2 as well, which treats the time as directly proportional to the rate and has the faster tap taking longer; 4 hours comes from reading ‘twice as fast’ additively, as two hours quicker, and working out 6 − 2 instead of scaling the time by a factor of 2; 1.5 hours comes from applying the factor of 2 twice, halving 6 to 3 and then halving again.
- (c) 16 cm — Corresponding sides of similar triangles are all in the same ratio. Use the pair whose lengths are both known: the scale factor from triangle ABC to triangle PQR is 12 ÷ 6 = 2. Since QR corresponds to BC, multiply BC by that scale factor: 8 × 2 = 16, so QR = 16 cm.
- (d) 3 : 8 — Multiply both parts by 4 to clear the decimal: 0.75 × 4 = 3 and 2 × 4 = 8, giving 3 : 8, which has no common factor other than 1. Giving 75 : 200 multiplies by 100 instead of 4, and has not then been simplified down to 3 : 8. Giving 0.75 : 2 has not been converted into whole numbers at all. Giving 3 : 2 converts the first part correctly but leaves the second part unscaled.
- (a) 7 — The average rate of change of y with respect to x over an interval is the change in y divided by the change in x between its two endpoints — the gradient of the chord joining them, not a rate at a single point. At x = 1: 2 × 1 = 2, so y = 1 + 2 = 3. At x = 4: 2 × 4 = 8, so y = 16 + 8 = 24. The change in y is 24 − 3 = 21 and the change in x is 4 − 1 = 3, so the average rate of change is 21 ÷ 3 = 7. Reporting the change in y, 21, on its own is not a rate of change, because it has not been divided by the 3 units of x over which it happened. Reporting 3 is not a rate either — 3 is the width of the interval, and also the value of y at x = 1, and neither of those measures how fast y is changing. Subtracting in the wrong order gives −21 ÷ 3 = −7, the wrong sign. The average rate of change of y with respect to x over the interval is 7.
- (a) The hourly rate is £5 and the fixed fee is £7 — The gradient is (27 − 12) ÷ (4 − 1) = 15 ÷ 3 = £5, the hourly rate. Using the point (1, 12): 12 = 5 × 1 + fee, so the fee is 12 − 5 = £7. That gives 'The hourly rate is £5 and the fixed fee is £7'. Swapping the two figures gives the statement with £7 as the rate and £5 as the fee, which has them the wrong way round. Taking the C-value of the first point, £12, as the fixed fee ignores that 1 hour of hire is already included in that £12. Using 15, the change in C, as the hourly rate without dividing by the change in h (3 hours) gives the statement claiming a £15 hourly rate.
- (c) £624.32 — A 4% rise is a multiplier of 1.04, applied once each year. After year 1: 5000 × 1.04 = 5200. After year 2: 5200 × 1.04 = 5408. After year 3: 5408 × 1.04 = 5624.32. The question asks for the interest, not the value of the account, so take away the amount invested at the start: 5624.32 − 5000 = 624.32. The total interest earned is £624.32.
- (c) C = 1.5n — Method: a fixed ratio between C and n means C is always the same multiple of n, and that multiple is the cost of one bottle. Working: 3.00 ÷ 2 = 1.5, 7.50 ÷ 5 = 1.5 and 12.00 ÷ 8 = 1.5, so every bottle costs £1.50 and C = 1.5n. Answer: C = 1.5n. The distractors: C = n + 1 comes from subtracting on the first row, 3 − 2 = 1, and adding that difference instead of multiplying; it fits the first row and fails the other two, which is why three rows are given; C = 3n reads the £3.00 as the price of one bottle when it is the price of two; C = n/1.5 divides the number of bottles by the price of one bottle, which works out how many bottles a pound buys instead of what n bottles cost.
