Answer key
- (c) 500 — Pressure = force ÷ area = 250 ÷ 0.5 = 500 pascals. Getting 125 comes from multiplying the force by the area instead of dividing (250 × 0.5 = 125). Getting 249.5 comes from subtracting the area from the force instead of dividing. Getting 50 comes from misreading the area as 5 m² instead of 0.5 m² and dividing 250 by 5.
- (d) 500 ml — Varnish covers a surface, so the amount needed scales with the area scale factor, which is the square of the length scale factor. The length scale factor is 50 ÷ 20 = 2.5, so the area scale factor is 2.5 × 2.5 = 6.25. The varnish needed for the larger statue is 80 × 6.25 = 500 ml. Using 2.5 on its own would scale a length, not a surface.
- (b) 2, the cost in pounds of each extra gigabyte — Method: the gradient is the change in cost divided by the change in data, so it is the cost of each extra gigabyte; the value where the line meets the vertical axis is the charge before any data is used, which is a different quantity. Working: from (0, 10) to (8, 26) the cost rises by 26 − 10 = 16 pounds while the data rises by 8 − 0 = 8 gigabytes, so the gradient is 16 ÷ 8 = 2, meaning each extra gigabyte costs £2. Answer: 2, the cost in pounds of each extra gigabyte. The distractors: '10, the cost in pounds of each extra gigabyte' reads the intercept as the gradient, but 10 is what the tariff costs when no data at all has been used; '3.25, the cost in pounds of each extra gigabyte' comes from 26 ÷ 8, treating the line as though it passed through the origin when it starts at 10; '2, the fixed monthly charge in pounds' has the gradient right but describes the intercept, and the fixed charge on this tariff is £10.
- (d) 5/4 — Work out the number of free seats: 54 − 24 = 30. Form the fraction 30/24; both numbers share a factor of 6, so 30 ÷ 6 = 5 and 24 ÷ 6 = 4, giving 5/4. 4/5 comes from writing the fraction the wrong way round, as reserved over free (24/30). 5/9 comes from comparing the free seats with the total number of seats (30/54), instead of with the reserved seats. 5/6 comes from miscalculating 54 − 24 as 20 instead of 30, then forming 20/24.
- (b) 1:200000 — '1 cm represents 2 km' means 1 cm on the map is 2 km in real life. Convert 2 km into centimetres, the same unit as the 1: 2 km = 2000 m = 200 000 cm. So the scale is 1 : 200 000. Converting only as far as metres gives 1 : 2000 — the conversion to centimetres was never finished. Losing a zero in the conversion gives 1 : 20 000, ten times too small. Writing 1 : 2 without converting units at all compares 1 cm to 2 km directly, which is not a valid ratio since the units do not match.
- (a) 1:8 — Convert 2 kg to grams: 2 kg = 2000 g. The ratio is 250 : 2000. The highest common factor of 250 and 2000 is 250. Divide both parts by 250: 250 ÷ 250 = 1 and 2000 ÷ 250 = 8, so the ratio is 1 : 8. Leaving the kilograms unconverted gives 250 : 2, which simplifies to 125 : 1 — the units on each side are different, so this does not compare like with like. Dividing by 50 instead of 250 gives 5 : 40, which still shares a common factor of 5, so it is not fully simplified. Swapping the order gives 8 : 1, grams to kilograms the wrong way round.
- (c) a decrease of 25% — Method: use multipliers. An increase of 50% is × 1.5 and a decrease of 50% is × 0.5. Working: 1.5 × 0.5 = 0.75, so the final price is 75% of the original. Answer: a decrease of 25%. The distractors: no change comes from assuming +50% and −50% cancel; a decrease of 50% comes from applying only the second change; an increase of 25% has the direction wrong.
- (c) 1 : 27 — The edge lengths are in the ratio 2 : 6, which simplifies to 1 : 3. Volumes scale with the cube of the length ratio, so the volume ratio is 1³ : 3³ = 1 : 27. Giving 1 : 3 uses the length ratio without cubing it. Giving 1 : 9 squares the length ratio, which is the rule for areas, instead of cubing it, which is the rule for volumes. Giving 27 : 1 has the ratio the right way round for larger to smaller, not smaller to larger as the question asks.
- (b) 1:25 — Write the ratio time : volume using the numbers in the question: 8 : 200. Divide both parts by their highest common factor, 8, to give 1 : 25. (25:1 comes from writing the ratio the wrong way round, volume : time. 8:25 comes from dividing only the volume by 8 and leaving the time unchanged. 25:8 is that same mistake written the wrong way round.)
- (a) 4/5 — Method: find the June takings first, then write them over the May takings and cancel. Working: the takings fell by £900, so June is £4500 − £900 = £3600; the fraction is 3600/4500, and dividing the numerator and the denominator by 900 gives 4/5. Answer: 4/5 of the May takings. The distractors: 1/5 comes from writing the fall over the May takings, 900/4500, which answers how far the takings dropped rather than what June's takings are compared with May's; 5/4 comes from writing May over June, 4500/3600, reversing the order the question asks for; 4/9 comes from writing June over the two months added together, 3600/8100, a part-to-whole fraction when the comparison asked for is with May alone.
- (a) 1/9 — The ratio copper : tin is 9:1, so write tin over copper: 1/9. (9/1 comes from writing the ratio the wrong way round, copper over tin. 1/10 comes from comparing the tin to the total mass of the alloy, 1 part out of 10. 9/10 comes from comparing the copper to the total mass of the alloy, 9 parts out of 10.)
- (c) They are in direct proportion, because y ÷ x = 2.5 for both pairs. — Testing direct proportion means checking that y ÷ x is the same for every pair: 15 ÷ 6 = 2.5 and 25 ÷ 10 = 2.5, so the quantities are in direct proportion. Saying they are not in proportion because x + y differs uses addition, which is not the correct test for proportion. Saying they are not in proportion because y − x differs also uses the wrong test — subtraction, not division. Saying they are in proportion because x × y is 90 and 250 uses multiplication, which is the test for inverse proportion, and the two products are not even equal to each other, so this option also contradicts itself.
- (c) 16% — Method: scale each concentration to its own mass to find the salt it contains, add the two masses of salt, then write the ratio of salt to mixture per 100 g. Working: 10:100 = x:300 gives 30 g of salt, and 25:100 = y:200 gives 50 g of salt; the mixture holds 30 + 50 = 80 g of salt in 300 + 200 = 500 g of solution; 80:500 = 16:100. Answer: 16%. The distractors: 17.5% is the mean of 10% and 25%, which ignores that there is more of the weaker solution than of the stronger one; 19% comes from swapping the two concentrations over, working out (300 × 25% + 200 × 10%) ÷ 500; 26.7% comes from dividing the 80 g of salt by the 300 g of the first solution rather than by the 500 g of mixture.
- (a) 675 ml — How much a jug holds is a volume, and volumes of similar solids scale with the cube of the length scale factor. The length scale factor is 12 ÷ 8 = 1.5, so the volume scale factor is 1.5 × 1.5 × 1.5 = 3.375. The larger jug holds 200 × 3.375 = 675 ml. Multiplying the scale factor by 3 instead of raising it to the power 3 is the mistake to guard against here.
- (c) 250 miles — Find the distance travelled in 1 hour: 150 ÷ 3 = 50 miles. Multiply by 5 hours: 50 × 5 = 250 miles. Giving 300 miles doubles the original distance (150 × 2 = 300) using a scale factor of 2 instead of the correct 5 ÷ 3. Giving 200 miles adds only one extra hour's distance, 50, instead of the two extra hours actually needed (150 + 50 = 200, rather than 150 + 100). Giving 90 miles divides by the scale factor instead of multiplying (150 × 3 ÷ 5 = 90).
