Answer key
- (c) L = d/5 — The scale 1 : 20 means each cm on the drawing represents 20 cm in real life, so the real length in cm is 20d. Converting to metres by dividing by 100: L = 20d/100 = d/5.
- (c) Height rising at 2 m/s at t = 1.5 s — A tangent's gradient on a height-time graph is the instantaneous rate of change of height, in metres per second, so gradient 2 means the ball's height is increasing at 2 m/s at t = 1.5 s. Saying the height 'is 2 m' confuses the gradient, a rate, with the y-value on the graph, which is the ball's height itself. Saying the ball 'travelled 2 m from t = 1 to t = 2' treats the instantaneous gradient at one instant as if it were the total distance risen over a whole one-second interval, which is a different quantity found from two height readings, not from one tangent. Saying the speed 'is 2 m/s²' uses the wrong units — m/s² measures acceleration, the rate of change of speed, not speed itself. Always check that the units quoted match what a height-time graph's gradient can actually give you: metres per second.
- (b) 4/3 — Work out the number of bananas: 3/4 of 16 = 12. Form the fraction 16/12 (apples over bananas); both numbers share a factor of 4, so 16 ÷ 4 = 4 and 12 ÷ 4 = 3, giving 4/3. 3/4 comes from giving the fraction that was already stated in the question (bananas as a fraction of apples), instead of inverting it. 4/1 comes from reading '3/4 of the apples' as 'the apples reduced by 3/4', giving only 4 bananas, then 16/4 = 4. 4/7 comes from comparing the apples with the total number of pieces of fruit (16/28), instead of with the bananas alone.
- (b) 80 — Method: the difference between 40% and 25% of the number is 15% of the number, and that difference is 12. Working: 15% of the number is 12, so 1% of the number is 12 ÷ 15 = 0.8, and the number is 0.8 × 100 = 80. Check: 40% of 80 is 32, 25% of 80 is 20, and 32 − 20 = 12. Answer: 80. The distractors: 30 comes from solving 40% of the number = 12; 48 comes from solving 25% of the number = 12; 15 is the percentage difference written as the answer.
- (c) £840 — Method: find the total amount raised using the reverse percentage, then subtract the entry fees to find the donations. Working: £1,260 is 60% of the total, so the total is £1,260 ÷ 0.6, and subtracting the entry fees from this total leaves £840 raised through donations. Answer: £840. £2,100 comes from correctly finding the total amount raised but then forgetting to subtract the entry fees, giving the total instead of the donations alone. £504 comes from working out 40% of the entry fees themselves, £1,260 × 0.4 = £504, instead of first finding the total amount raised. £1,890 comes from treating £1,260 as 40% of the total instead of 60%, dividing by 0.4 to get a total of £3,150, and then subtracting the entry fees from that incorrect total.
- (a) 2978 — A rise of 6% is a multiplier of 1.06, applied once for each year. After year 1: 2500 × 1.06 = 2650. After year 2: 2650 × 1.06 = 2809. After year 3: 2809 × 1.06 = 2977.54, which is 2978 to the nearest whole number. Multiplying by 1.18 in one go would be wrong, because the second and third years grow from larger numbers than the first.
- (d) 8 — The product of price and number of tickets is constant: k = 4 × 12 = 48. At £6 per ticket, the number of tickets is 48 ÷ 6 = 8. Getting 18 comes from treating price and tickets as directly proportional and working out 12 × 6 ÷ 4 instead of dividing k by the new price. Getting 12 assumes the number of tickets does not change when the price changes. Getting 6 comes from writing down the new price instead of working out the number of tickets.
- (c) 9:15:21 — 6 : 10 : 14 simplifies to 3 : 5 : 7 (divide every part by 2). Multiplying every part of 3 : 5 : 7 by 3 gives 9 : 15 : 21, so 9 : 15 : 21 is equivalent to 6 : 10 : 14. Adding 2 to every part of 6 : 10 : 14 gives 8 : 12 : 16, which is not equivalent — ratios are equivalent when every part is multiplied by the same number, not when the same number is added to every part. Doubling only the first two parts, 6 × 2 = 12 and 10 × 2 = 20, but leaving the third part unchanged at 14, gives 12 : 20 : 14 — a scaling applied to two parts and not the third. Cancelling the first two parts correctly, 6 ÷ 2 = 3 and 10 ÷ 2 = 5, then treating the three numbers as a sequence and making the third part the sum of the first two, 3 + 5 = 8, gives 3 : 5 : 8 — the third part was never divided by 2 at all.
- (a) 20 people/year — The gradient of a tangent to a graph at a point equals the instantaneous rate of change of the quantity there. A straight line's gradient is the change in the vertical value divided by the change in the horizontal value between two points on it. Here the tangent passes through (2, 180) and (6, 260), so the change in population is 260 − 180 = 80 and the change in time is 6 − 2 = 4. The gradient is 80 ÷ 4 = 20. Reporting the change in population, 80, on its own is not a rate, because that growth happened over 4 years and has not been divided by them. Adding the two changes instead of dividing gives 80 + 4 = 84, which is not a rate. Subtracting the coordinates in the wrong order, (180 − 260) ÷ (6 − 2), gives −80 ÷ 4 = −20, the wrong sign. The instantaneous rate of change of the population at t = 4 is 20 people per year.
- (d) 12 hours — Since time is inversely proportional to the number of installers, T = k/n. Using n = 4, T = 18: 18 = k ÷ 4, so k = 18 × 4 = 72. The equation is T = 72/n. When n = 6: T = 72 ÷ 6 = 12. Using the original number of installers instead of the new one gives T = 72 ÷ 4 = 18, the wrong value substituted. Treating more installers as needing more time, as if T were directly proportional to n, gives k = 18 ÷ 4 = 4.5 and then T = 4.5 × 6 = 27, the opposite relationship to the one described. Stopping at k = 72 and reporting it gives the time the job would take a single installer working alone — the constant still has to be divided by the new number of installers before it answers the question asked. With 6 installers, the job takes 12 hours.
- (a) 3.375 — Method: the volume scale factor between similar shapes is the length scale factor cubed, not the length scale factor itself. Working: the length scale factor is 12 ÷ 8 = 1.5, and 1.5³ = 3.375. Answer: 3.375. Jayden's answer, 1.5, is only the LENGTH scale factor — he never cubed it to get the volume scale factor. 2.25 comes from squaring the length scale factor instead of cubing it, which would give the area scale factor. 4.5 comes from multiplying the length scale factor by 3 (the number of dimensions) instead of cubing it.
- (d) 4/3 — The amount of yellow paint is 0.75 times the amount of blue paint. As a fraction, 0.75 = 3/4, so yellow = 3/4 of blue. To write blue as a fraction of yellow, use the reciprocal: flip 3/4 to get 4/3. 3/4 comes from keeping the original fraction without inverting it. 1/4 comes from computing 1 − 3/4 = 1/4, which is not how a fraction reverses. 40/3 comes from converting 0.75 to a fraction as 75/1000 = 3/40 (misplacing the decimal point), then inverting that.
- (b) 0.22 km — The real one-way distance is 4.4 × 2500 = 11000 cm. Converting units: 11000 ÷ 100 = 110 m, and 110 ÷ 1000 = 0.11 km. Since the jogger runs there and back, the total distance is 0.11 × 2 = 0.22 km. 0.11 km comes from working out only the one-way distance and forgetting the return journey. 220 km comes from correctly doubling the one-way distance in metres, 110 × 2 = 220, but leaving it mislabelled as kilometres instead of converting metres to kilometres. 110 km comes from working out only the one-way distance in metres, 110, and mislabelling it as kilometres.
- (c) 183 mg — Apply the decay, then add the new dose, once for each hour. Hour 1: 0.7 × 200 = 140, then 140 + 50 = 190. Hour 2: 0.7 × 190 = 133, then 133 + 50 = 183, so there is 183 mg after 2 hours. Forgetting the top-up dose and only applying the decay gives 0.7 × 200 = 140, then 0.7 × 140 = 98 — this ignores that a further 50 mg is given every hour. Adding the 50 mg BEFORE the decay is applied, instead of after, gives 0.7 × (200 + 50) = 175, then 0.7 × (175 + 50) = 157.5, which changes how much of the dose is eliminated in the same hour it is given. Multiplying by 0.3, the percentage ELIMINATED, instead of by 0.7, the percentage REMAINING, gives 0.3 × 200 + 50 = 110, then 0.3 × 110 + 50 = 83 — this mixes up the amount that leaves the bloodstream with the amount that stays in it. Always check whether a percentage describes what remains or what is removed before choosing the multiplier.
- (d) 2748 — A 7% increase each year means the value becomes 100% + 7% = 107% of the previous year's value, and 107% = 1.07, so the multiplier is 1.07. Multiply by 1.07 for each of the 2 years: 2400 × 1.07 × 1.07 = 2747.76, which rounds to 2748. (2736 comes from using simple growth instead of compound: 2400 + 2 × (2400 × 0.07) = 2736. 2568 is the population after only 1 year, 2400 × 1.07, forgetting the second year's growth. 2747 comes from rounding 2747.76 down instead of up to the nearest whole number.)
