Answer key
- (a) 4 days — Method: the fence is a fixed amount of work, so builders × days is constant; find that product and divide it by the new number of builders. Working: 3 × 12 = 36 builder-days of work, so with 9 builders the time is 36 ÷ 9 = 4 days. Answer: 4 days. The distractors: 6 days comes from halving the 12 days because there are more builders, rather than dividing by the factor of 3 by which the workforce has grown; 36 days is the constant product of builders and days, given as a number of days instead of being shared between the builders; 9 days comes from taking 3 days off the 12, treating three extra builders as three fewer days, which is additive rather than proportional.
- (b) 1 : 1.875 — To write a ratio in the form 1 : n, divide both parts by the first part, 8: 8 ÷ 8 = 1 and 15 ÷ 8 = 1.875, giving 1 : 1.875. Giving 1 : 0.53 divides the wrong way round, computing 8 ÷ 15 instead of 15 ÷ 8. Giving 1.875 : 1 has the two parts of the answer swapped, which is the form n : 1, not 1 : n. Giving 8 : 1.875 divides only the second part by 8, so the first part is still 8, not 1.
- (a) 3/8, 41%, 0.43 — Method: convert every value to a decimal so they can be compared on the same scale, then order them. Working: 3/8 = 0.375, 41% = 0.41, and 0.43 stays as 0.43, so from smallest to largest the decimals are 0.375, 0.41, 0.43, giving the order 3/8, 41%, 0.43. Answer: 3/8, 41%, 0.43. The order 3/8, 0.43, 41% comes from comparing 0.43 and 41% as raw digits (43 versus 41) without converting 41% into the decimal 0.41 first, wrongly placing 0.43 before 41%. The order 0.43, 41%, 3/8 comes from placing the values in completely reversed order, from largest to smallest instead of smallest to largest. The order 41%, 0.43, 3/8 comes from ordering the values by their TYPE (percentage, then decimal, then fraction) rather than by their actual size.
- (a) 0.62 miles — The gradient of the line is the change in miles divided by the change in kilometres: 31 ÷ 50 = 0.62, so 1 kilometre converts to 0.62 miles. Dividing the wrong way round, 50 ÷ 31 = 1.612..., rounds to 1.61 miles — that finds how many kilometres are in 1 mile, not the reverse. Doubling the gradient, 1.24 miles, comes from using 62 ÷ 50 instead of 31 ÷ 50. Reading off the y-coordinate of the given point without dividing by the x-coordinate gives 31.00 miles, which is the number of miles for 50 kilometres, not for 1 kilometre.
- (d) 132 — Method: find the value of one part of the ratio, use it to find Leo's pages, then add both amounts together. Working: 84 ÷ 7 = 12 (value of one part). Leo's pages = 12 × 4 = 48. Total = 84 + 48 = 132. Wrong options: 48 gives only Leo's pages and forgets to add Mia's; 147 comes from reversing the ratio parts (84 ÷ 4 × 7 = 147) and stopping there; 231 comes from reversing the ratio parts and then adding Mia's pages (84 + 147).
- (a) 40 m² — A scale of 1 : 10 is a length scale factor of 10 from model to real. Areas scale with the square of the length scale factor: 10² = 100. 0.4 × 100 = 40, so the real staircase covers 40 m². Giving 4 m² uses the length scale factor, 10, without squaring it (0.4 × 10 = 4). Giving 0.04 m² divides by the scale factor instead of multiplying by its square (0.4 ÷ 10 = 0.04). Giving 400 m² cubes the scale factor, 10³ = 1000, as if area scaled like a volume (0.4 × 1000 = 400).
- (b) 7980 — After the first year: 8000 × 0.95 = 7600. After the second year: 7600 × 1.05 = 7980. 8000 comes from assuming a 5% decrease followed by a 5% increase returns exactly to the starting number — it does not, because the increase acts on the smaller, already-reduced number. 8400 comes from applying only the second year's 5% increase to the original number: 8000 × 1.05 = 8400. 7600 comes from applying only the first year's 5% decrease and stopping there, without applying the second year's increase.
- (a) 22p — First convert the hourly rate to pence: £13.20 = 1320p. Then convert from per hour to per minute by dividing by 60, since there are 60 minutes in an hour: 1320 ÷ 60 = 22p per minute. Working out 1320 × 60 = 79200p multiplies by 60 instead of dividing, going the wrong way between per hour and per minute. Working out 13.20 × 10 = 132p converts pounds to pence using the wrong power of ten, and dividing that by 60 carries the error through to give 2.2p. Working out 13.20 × 100 = 1320p converts the currency correctly but stops there, leaving the rate as pence per hour rather than completing the second conversion to pence per minute. The rate of pay is 22p per minute.
- (c) Yes, correct, because 24 ÷ 8 × 3 = 9. — Method: divide the count you know by its ratio part to find the value of one part, then multiply by the part you want. Working: one part = 24 ÷ 8 = 3 counters, so green = 3 × 3 = 9 counters, and the student is correct. Dividing 24 by 3 instead of 8 gives 24 ÷ 3 × 8 = 64, the ratio parts the wrong way round. Stopping after 24 ÷ 8 = 3 gives 3, forgetting to multiply by the green ratio part. Adding 24 + 3 = 27 confuses adding a ratio part with scaling by it.
- (c) 3 : 4 — Method: a fraction compares a part with the whole, while this ratio compares one part with the other part, so find the fraction that is black before writing the ratio. Working: if 3/7 are blue then the black pens make up 7/7 − 3/7 = 4/7 of the box, so out of every 7 pens 3 are blue and 4 are black, and blue : black = 3 : 4. Answer: 3 : 4. The distractors: 3 : 7 comes from reading the numerator and the denominator of 3/7 straight off as the two parts, which compares the blue pens with the whole box rather than with the black pens; 4 : 3 comes from writing the black pens before the blue pens, reversing the order asked for; 4 : 7 is the same numerator-and-denominator reading applied to the black fraction 4/7, again comparing a part with the whole box.
- (d) 1.00 litres — Squash is 2/9 of the mixture, so the squash volume is 4.5 × 2/9 = 1.00 litres. Using the water's fraction, 7/9, instead of squash's gives 4.5 × 7/9 = 3.50 litres — the volume of water, not squash. Dividing 4.5 by 9 but forgetting to multiply by the numerator 2 gives 4.5 ÷ 9 = 0.50 litres, which is only 1/9 of the mixture. Halving the total volume instead of applying the fraction 2/9 gives 4.5 ÷ 2 = 2.25 litres, which assumes the mixture is half squash.
- (c) Yes — 700 ÷ 7 = 100 ml for the 1 part of concentrate — Method: add the ratio parts to find the total number of parts, divide the total volume by this, then use the ratio to find concentrate's share. Working: 1 + 6 = 7 parts. 700 ÷ 7 = 100 ml per part. Concentrate = 1 part = 100 ml, so Freya is correct. Wrong options: 'divide 700 by 6' uses only one of the ratio numbers instead of the total of 7 parts, giving about 117 ml; '600 ml is concentrate' swaps which ratio number belongs to the concentrate and which belongs to the water; 'half of 700 ml should be concentrate' ignores the ratio altogether and assumes an equal split.
- (c) £3,200 — Method: find the value of one part of the ratio from the first investor's amount, then work out the second investor's share before adding both together. Working: £1,200 is 3 parts, so one part is £1,200 ÷ 3 = £400. The second investor's share is 5 × £400 = £2,000, and the total is £1,200 + £2,000 = £3,200. So the total invested is £3,200. Distractor £2,000 is only the second investor's share, without adding the first investor's £1,200. Distractor £2,400 comes from doubling the first investor's amount instead of using the ratio. Distractor £6,000 comes from multiplying £1,200 by 5 directly instead of first finding the value of one part.
- (c) 27 : 64 — For similar solids, the ratio of volumes is the ratio of lengths cubed: 3³ : 4³ = 27 : 64. 3 : 4 comes from using the height ratio itself as the volume ratio, without cubing it at all. 9 : 16 comes from squaring each part instead of cubing (3² : 4²) — squaring is the rule for area, not volume. 27 : 4 comes from cubing only the first part of the ratio (3³ = 27), and leaving the second part uncubed.
- (c) 5/7 — First find the number of children: 84 − 35 = 49. The question compares the adults with the children, not with everyone on the bus, so the denominator is 49 and the numerator is 35, giving 35/49. Both parts divide by 7: 35 ÷ 7 = 5 and 49 ÷ 7 = 7. In its simplest form the fraction is 5/7.
