Answer key
- (b) 1500 — The rate is 3 ÷ 2 = 1.5 litres per minute. Converting to cm³: 1.5 × 1000 = 1500 cm³ per minute. Getting 3000 comes from converting 3 litres to cm³ first (3000 cm³) and forgetting to divide by the 2 minutes. Getting 750 comes from dividing by the 2 minutes a second time after converting (1500 ÷ 2). Getting 2000 comes from converting the 2 minutes as if it were litres (2 × 1000) instead of using the correct rate of 1.5 litres per minute.
- (c) 3 : 2 — Method: 'A is k times B' means that if B is taken as 1 part then A is k parts, and a ratio in its simplest form is written with whole numbers that have no common factor. Working: taking B as 1, A is 1.5, so A : B = 1.5 : 1; multiplying both parts by 2 clears the decimal and gives 3 : 2, and 3 and 2 share no factor. Answer: 3 : 2. The distractors: 2 : 3 comes from writing B before A, reversing the order the question asks for; 1.5 : 1 is the right relationship but is not in its simplest form, because a ratio in its simplest form uses whole numbers; 3 : 5 comes from comparing A with the combined length rather than with B, since A : (A + B) = 1.5 : 2.5 = 3 : 5.
- (d) 40 — Substitute x = 5 and y = 8 into y = k ÷ x to get 8 = k ÷ 5, so k = 8 × 5 = 40. Getting 13 comes from adding the two numbers (5 + 8) instead of multiplying. Getting 1.6 comes from dividing 8 by 5 instead of multiplying. Getting 3 comes from subtracting the two numbers (8 − 5) instead of multiplying.
- (b) 15 — Find the multiplier connecting y to x: 10 ÷ 4 = 2.5. Then apply it to the new value of x: 2.5 × 6 = 15. Working out 10 + (6 − 4) = 12 adds the change in x straight onto y instead of scaling proportionally. Working out 10 × 6 = 60 multiplies the given y-value by the new x-value directly, without finding the multiplier first. Writing 10 keeps y the same as before, not realising it must change with x. When x = 6, y = 15.
- (a) 2/3 — Put the laptop bag's mass over the school bag's mass: 2.4/3.6. Multiply both numbers by 10 to clear the decimals: 24/36. Divide both by their highest common factor, 12: 24÷12 = 2, 36÷12 = 3, giving 2/3. (3/2 comes from writing the masses the wrong way round. 1/3 comes from finding the difference in the masses, 3.6 − 2.4 = 1.2 kg, and writing it as a fraction of the school bag's mass, 1.2/3.6. 2/5 comes from comparing the laptop bag's mass to the total mass of both bags, 2.4/6.)
- (a) £11.70 — Rate of pay = total pay ÷ hours worked, so £105.30 ÷ 9 = £11.70 per hour. Working out £105.30 − 9 = £96.30 subtracts the number of hours from the total pay instead of dividing. Working out £105.30 × 9 = £947.70 multiplies total pay by hours worked instead of dividing. Misplacing the decimal point in the correct answer gives £117.00 instead of £11.70. Maya's rate of pay is £11.70 per hour.
- (c) £7617.60 — To decrease by 8% each year, multiply by 0.92 (100% − 8%) twice. £9000 × 0.92 × 0.92 = £7617.60. £7560.00 comes from treating the two 8% decreases as a single flat 16% decrease applied once instead of compounding: £9000 × 0.84 = £7560.00. £8280.00 comes from applying the 8% decrease only once, for 1 year instead of 2: £9000 × 0.92 = £8280.00. £10497.60 comes from multiplying by 1.08 twice, increasing the value instead of decreasing it: £9000 × 1.08 × 1.08 = £10497.60.
- (b) 10000 cm² — Method: an area conversion factor is the square of the length conversion factor, because both sides of the square are scaled. Working: a square metre is a square of side 100 cm, so its area is 100 × 100 = 10000 cm². Answer: 10000 cm². The distractors: 100 cm² comes from using the length factor without squaring it; 200 cm² comes from doubling the length factor instead of squaring it; 1000000 cm² comes from cubing the factor, which is the conversion for a volume, not an area.
- (c) Falling at £950 per year — The gradient of a tangent on a value-age graph is a rate, in pounds per year, so −950 means the van's value is falling at £950 per year at that instant. Writing this as 950% per year mistakes a rate measured in pounds per year for a percentage — the units of a gradient come from the units on the two axes, £ and years, not from a percentage. Saying the value 'falls by £950 over the next year' treats the instantaneous rate at age 2 as if it stayed constant for a whole year, which finds an average future change, not the instantaneous rate at age 2 itself. Reading the sign the wrong way round gives 'rising at £950 per year', which would mean the van is gaining value. Always match the units of a gradient to the units on the two axes of the graph.
- (b) Provider Y — £21.00 against Provider X's £23.00 — Provider X's gradient is (35 − 15) ÷ 100 = 0.2, so cost = 15 + 0.2 × 40 = 15 + 8 = £23.00. Provider Y's gradient is (45 − 5) ÷ 100 = 0.4, so cost = 5 + 0.4 × 40 = 5 + 16 = £21.00. £21.00 is less than £23.00, so Provider Y is cheaper: 'Provider Y — £21.00 against Provider X's £23.00'. Getting both costs right but naming Provider X as cheaper compares the two numbers the wrong way round — £23.00 is more than £21.00, not less. Comparing only the fixed fees, £15.00 and £5.00, ignores the cost of the 40 gigabytes actually used. Reading off the costs at 100 gigabytes, £35.00 and £45.00, directly from the graph answers a different usage from the 40 gigabytes the question asks about.
- (a) 6 — Method: for inverse proportion the product xy is the same for every pair, so find that product and use it to work back to the missing value. Working: xy = 2 × 15 = 30, so when x = 5 the equation 5y = 30 gives y = 30 ÷ 5 = 6. Answer: 6. The distractors: 37.5 comes from treating the pair as direct proportion and scaling y up with x, 15 × 5 ÷ 2, although in inverse proportion y falls as x rises; 30 is the constant product itself, given as a value of y rather than used to find one; 12 comes from additive thinking — x rises by 3, so 3 is taken off y — which would make the two quantities differ by a constant instead of multiplying to one.
- (a) £150 — Value after year 1: £800 × 0.75 = £600. Value after year 2: £600 × 0.75 = £450. The loss during the second year alone is £600 − £450 = £150. £450 comes from giving the value remaining after 2 years, not the amount lost during the second year. £200 comes from working out the loss during the first year instead of the second: £800 − £600 = £200. £350 comes from working out the total loss over both years instead of just the second year's loss: £800 − £450 = £350.
- (d) 3/5 — Convert both times to minutes: 2 hours 15 minutes = 135 minutes; 3 hours 45 minutes = 225 minutes. Put the train time over the bus time: 135/225. Divide both numbers by their highest common factor, 45: 135÷45 = 3, 225÷45 = 5, giving 3/5. (5/3 comes from writing the times the wrong way round. 2/5 comes from finding the difference, 225 − 135 = 90 minutes, and writing it as a fraction of the bus time, 90/225. 3/8 comes from comparing the train time to the total time for both journeys, 135/360.)
- (a) 5:3 — Divide both prices by their highest common factor, 3: 15 ÷ 3 = 5 and 9 ÷ 3 = 3, giving the ratio 5:3. Choosing 3:5 comes from writing the ratio the wrong way round, as child price to adult price. Choosing 2:3 comes from using the difference between the two prices (15 − 9 = 6) as the first part of the ratio instead of the adult price, then simplifying 6:9 by dividing by 3. Choosing 5:8 comes from comparing the adult price with the total cost of both tickets (£15 out of £24) instead of comparing it with the child price.
- (d) 218 — The rule x_{n+1} = 0.8x_n + 50 must be applied once for each step, using the result of the previous step every time — not the same starting value repeated. Starting from x_0 = 200: 0.8 × 200 = 160, so x_1 = 160 + 50 = 210. Then 0.8 × 210 = 168, so x_2 = 168 + 50 = 218. Stopping after one iteration leaves x_1 = 210, not x_2. Applying only the multiplier twice without adding 50 at each step uses 0.8² = 0.64, and 0.64 × 200 = 128, which drops the 50 completely. Adding 50 twice at the end instead of once per step, 128 + 100 = 228, still does not reproduce the actual recurrence, because the 50 added at the first step is itself multiplied by 0.8 at the second step. After two iterations, x_2 = 218.
