Answer key
- (b) 12 — Since y is directly proportional to √x, y = k√x. Using x = 4, y = 8: √4 = 2, so 8 = k × 2, giving k = 8 ÷ 2 = 4. The equation is y = 4√x. When x = 9: √9 = 3, so y = 4 × 3 = 12. Treating the relationship as if y were proportional to x itself, rather than to √x, gives k = 8 ÷ 4 = 2 and then y = 2 × 9 = 18, which is a different relationship. Multiplying k by the new x-value instead of by its square root gives y = 4 × 9 = 36, skipping the square root altogether. Reporting √9 on its own, without multiplying by k, gives only 3, not the value of y. When x = 9, y = 12.
- (c) 12 m — Method: the perimeter of a rectangle is twice the sum of the length and the width, so half the perimeter is one length plus one width; split that half using the ratio. Working: half of 64 is 64 ÷ 2 = 32 m, the ratio 5:3 has 5 + 3 = 8 parts, so one part is 32 ÷ 8 = 4 m, and the width is 3 × 4 = 12 m. So the width is 12 m. Distractor 20 m is the length, 5 parts, not the width. Distractor 24 m comes from splitting the whole perimeter, 64 m, into 8 parts and multiplying by 3, forgetting to halve the perimeter first. Distractor 8 m comes from the same slip stopped one step earlier: splitting the whole perimeter into 8 parts, 64 ÷ 8 = 8, and giving that instead of the width.
- (d) 3 : 2 — Convert both amounts to pence: £3.60 = 360p and £2.40 = 240p, giving the ratio 360 : 240. Divide both parts by their highest common factor, 120, to get 3 : 2. Giving 360 : 240 has not been simplified at all. Giving 2 : 3 swaps the order. Giving 36 : 24 has been divided by 10, which is a common factor but not the highest one, so it is not yet in simplest form.
- (b) Car A, 50 km/h — Method: speed = distance ÷ time for each car, then compare. Working: Car A = 150 ÷ 3 = 50 km/h. Car B = 180 ÷ 4 = 45 km/h. Since 50 > 45, Car A is faster, travelling at 50 km/h. Wrong options: Car B, 45 km/h correctly finds Car B's speed but wrongly names the slower car as faster; Car A, 45 km/h picks the correct car but uses Car B's speed by mistake; Car B, 50 km/h picks the wrong car but uses Car A's correct speed value.
- (c) Falling at 3.2°C per minute — The gradient of a tangent gives the instantaneous rate of change, in °C per minute here, not a temperature and not a total change. The negative sign means the temperature is falling, not rising, so the tea is cooling at a rate of 3.2°C per minute at the instant t = 4. Reading the sign the wrong way round gives 'rising at 3.2°C per minute', which would mean the tea is heating up. Treating −3.2 as a total drop since the tea was poured confuses a rate with an accumulated change, which would need the temperatures at two different times, not the gradient at one instant. Treating −3.2 as the temperature reading itself confuses the gradient, a rate of change, with the y-value on the graph. Always check whether a number is a rate, a total, or a single reading before you use it.
- (a) £11.70 — Rate of pay = total pay ÷ hours worked, so £105.30 ÷ 9 = £11.70 per hour. Working out £105.30 − 9 = £96.30 subtracts the number of hours from the total pay instead of dividing. Working out £105.30 × 9 = £947.70 multiplies total pay by hours worked instead of dividing. Misplacing the decimal point in the correct answer gives £117.00 instead of £11.70. Maya's rate of pay is £11.70 per hour.
- (a) 22p — First convert the hourly rate to pence: £13.20 = 1320p. Then convert from per hour to per minute by dividing by 60, since there are 60 minutes in an hour: 1320 ÷ 60 = 22p per minute. Working out 1320 × 60 = 79200p multiplies by 60 instead of dividing, going the wrong way between per hour and per minute. Working out 13.20 × 10 = 132p converts pounds to pence using the wrong power of ten, and dividing that by 60 carries the error through to give 2.2p. Working out 13.20 × 100 = 1320p converts the currency correctly but stops there, leaving the rate as pence per hour rather than completing the second conversion to pence per minute. The rate of pay is 22p per minute.
- (b) £16 — Since cost is proportional to the square root of diameter, C = k√d. Using d = 9, C = 12: √9 = 3, so 12 = k × 3, giving k = 12 ÷ 3 = 4. The equation is C = 4√d. When d = 16: √16 = 4, so C = 4 × 4 = 16. Halving the new diameter instead of taking its square root gives 16 ÷ 2 = 8, and then C = 4 × 8 = 32 — halving a number is not the same as taking its square root, as √16 = 4, not 8. Multiplying k by the diameter itself instead of by its square root gives C = 4 × 16 = 64, skipping the square root altogether. Reporting √16 on its own, without multiplying by k, gives only 4, not the cost. The cost of manufacturing a lens of diameter 16 mm is £16.
- (a) 35/32 — Work out each weekly total first. Last week: 5 × 7 = 35 hours. This week: 4 × 8 = 32 hours. Last week's total is being written as a fraction of this week's total, so last week goes on the top and this week goes on the bottom, giving 35/32. The two totals share no common factor, so the fraction cannot be cancelled. It is greater than 1, which says that Priya worked more hours last week than this week.
- (c) 2/7 — Method: each number in a ratio counts parts, so the whole is all the parts added together, and the fraction wanted is the cement parts over that total. Working: the mix has 5 + 2 = 7 parts altogether, and 2 of those parts are cement, so the cement is 2/7 of the mix. Answer: 2/7. The distractors: 2/5 comes from writing the cement parts over the sand parts, comparing one part with the other part instead of with the whole; 5/7 comes from writing the sand parts over the total, which answers about the wrong material; 7/2 comes from writing the total over the cement parts, turning the fraction upside down.
- (a) 12/5 — If A is 5/12 of B, then B is the reciprocal of that fraction times A: flip 5/12 to get 12/5, so B is 12/5 of A. 5/12 comes from keeping the same fraction without flipping it, treating the relationship as if it works the same way in both directions. 7/12 comes from computing 1 − 5/12 = 7/12, which is not how a fraction reverses. 12/7 comes from subtracting 5 from 12 to get 7, and writing 12 over that, instead of swapping the numerator and denominator of 5/12.
- (b) 450.00 kg — 1 m³ = 100 × 100 × 100 = 1,000,000 cm³, so 0.5 m³ = 500,000 cm³. Mass = density × volume = 0.9 × 500,000 = 450,000 g. Converting to kilograms by dividing by 1000 gives 450,000 ÷ 1000 = 450.00 kg. Skipping the m³-to-cm³ conversion and multiplying 0.9 × 0.5 = 0.45 treats the volume as if it were already 0.5 cm³, giving 0.45 kg. Finding the mass correctly in grams, 450,000 g, but not converting to kilograms leaves 450000.00 kg, out by a factor of 1000. Using the area conversion factor of 10,000, as if converting m² to cm², instead of the volume factor of 1,000,000 gives 0.5 × 10,000 = 5,000 'cm³', and a mass of 0.9 × 5,000 = 4,500 g, which is 4.50 kg.
- (c) 90 cm² — The perimeter ratio is 30 : 45, which simplifies to 2 : 3, so the larger frame is 1.5 times the perimeter of the smaller one. Areas scale with the square of this length scale factor: 1.5² = 2.25. 40 × 2.25 = 90, so the larger frame has an area of 90 cm². Giving 60 cm² uses the scale factor, 1.5, without squaring it (40 × 1.5 = 60). Giving 135 cm² cubes the scale factor, 1.5³ = 3.375, as if area scaled like a volume (40 × 3.375 = 135). Giving 2.25 cm² is the squared scale factor on its own, without multiplying by the smaller frame's area of 40 cm².
- (a) 100 — The difference between the parts of the ratio is 7 − 3 = 4 parts, and this is worth 40 beads. Divide to find one part: 40 ÷ 4 = 10. The total number of parts is 7 + 3 = 10, so the total number of beads is 10 × 10 = 100. (40 is just the given difference between gold and silver, not the total. 70 is the number of gold beads only, using 7 parts. 30 is the number of silver beads only, using 3 parts.)
- (d) £7060 — A 6% decrease each year means the value becomes 100% − 6% = 94% of the previous year's value, and 94% = 0.94, so the multiplier is 0.94. Apply it once for each of the 3 years: £8500 × 0.94 = £7990 after 1 year, £7990 × 0.94 = £7510.60 after 2 years, £7510.60 × 0.94 = £7059.96 after 3 years, which rounds to £7060 to the nearest pound. (£6970 comes from using simple depreciation instead of compound, taking 6% of the original £8500 three times: £8500 − 3 × £510 = £6970. £7990 is the value after only 1 year, forgetting the remaining 2 years. £7511 is the value after only 2 years, £8500 × 0.94² = £7510.60, forgetting the third year.)
