Answer key
- (b) 75 cm² — Areas of similar shapes are in the ratio of the squares of their lengths. Squaring both parts of 3 : 5 gives an area ratio of 9 : 25, so the larger area is 25/9 of the smaller one. Working with the smaller area: 27 ÷ 9 = 3, and 3 × 25 = 75. The area of the larger rectangle is 75 cm².
- (d) 7/3 — The ratio cranberry : apple is 3:7, so apple juice is 7 parts and cranberry juice is 3 parts. Write apple over cranberry: 7/3. (3/7 comes from writing the ratio the wrong way round, cranberry over apple. 7/10 comes from comparing the apple juice to the total amount of the mixture, 7 parts out of 10. 3/10 comes from comparing the cranberry juice to the total amount of the mixture, 3 parts out of 10.)
- (a) 40 m² — A scale of 1 : 10 is a length scale factor of 10 from model to real. Areas scale with the square of the length scale factor: 10² = 100. 0.4 × 100 = 40, so the real staircase covers 40 m². Giving 4 m² uses the length scale factor, 10, without squaring it (0.4 × 10 = 4). Giving 0.04 m² divides by the scale factor instead of multiplying by its square (0.4 ÷ 10 = 0.04). Giving 400 m² cubes the scale factor, 10³ = 1000, as if area scaled like a volume (0.4 × 1000 = 400).
- (c) C = 1.5n — Method: a fixed ratio between C and n means C is always the same multiple of n, and that multiple is the cost of one bottle. Working: 3.00 ÷ 2 = 1.5, 7.50 ÷ 5 = 1.5 and 12.00 ÷ 8 = 1.5, so every bottle costs £1.50 and C = 1.5n. Answer: C = 1.5n. The distractors: C = n + 1 comes from subtracting on the first row, 3 − 2 = 1, and adding that difference instead of multiplying; it fits the first row and fails the other two, which is why three rows are given; C = 3n reads the £3.00 as the price of one bottle when it is the price of two; C = n/1.5 divides the number of bottles by the price of one bottle, which works out how many bottles a pound buys instead of what n bottles cost.
- (d) £2.00 — Cost for Printer A = 200 × £0.04 = £8. Cost for Printer B = 200 × £0.05 = £10. Difference = £10 − £8 = £2.00.
- (a) 3/4 — Write January's total over February's total: 360/480. Both numbers share a factor of 120, so dividing top and bottom by 120 gives 3/4. Choosing 4/3 comes from writing February's amount over January's amount, the wrong way round. Choosing 1/4 comes from finding the difference between the two months (480 − 360 = 120) and writing it over February's amount, instead of using January's amount. Choosing 3/7 comes from writing January's amount over the total received across both months (360 out of 840), instead of over February's amount alone.
- (a) The gradient is 3; the candidate's method is right. — The gradient of a tangent, like any straight line, is the change in y divided by the change in x between two points on it. Here the tangent passes through (1, 2) and (5, 14), so the change in y is 14 − 2 = 12 and the change in x is 5 − 1 = 4. The gradient is 12 ÷ 4 = 3, so the candidate's calculation is correct. Subtracting in the wrong order, (2 − 14) ÷ (5 − 1), gives −12 ÷ 4 = −3, the wrong sign. Adding the two changes instead of dividing them, 12 + 4 = 16, does not find a gradient at all. Dividing the change in x by the change in y instead of the other way round, 4 ÷ 12 = 1/3, inverts the calculation completely. Before accepting or rejecting a claimed gradient, always redo the calculation yourself in the same order — change in y over change in x — rather than trusting the arithmetic as given.
- (c) 3 : 4 — Method: a fraction compares a part with the whole, while this ratio compares one part with the other part, so find the fraction that is black before writing the ratio. Working: if 3/7 are blue then the black pens make up 7/7 − 3/7 = 4/7 of the box, so out of every 7 pens 3 are blue and 4 are black, and blue : black = 3 : 4. Answer: 3 : 4. The distractors: 3 : 7 comes from reading the numerator and the denominator of 3/7 straight off as the two parts, which compares the blue pens with the whole box rather than with the black pens; 4 : 3 comes from writing the black pens before the blue pens, reversing the order asked for; 4 : 7 is the same numerator-and-denominator reading applied to the black fraction 4/7, again comparing a part with the whole box.
- (b) 5 years — The recurrence P_{n+1} = 1.1P_n − 30 must be applied once per year, checking after each application whether the population has passed 460. Starting from P_0 = 400: 400 × 1.1 − 30 = 410, so P_1 = 410. Then 410 × 1.1 − 30 = 421, so P_2 = 421. Then 421 × 1.1 − 30 = 433.1, so P_3 = 433.1. Then 433.1 × 1.1 − 30 = 446.41, so P_4 = 446.41, which is still below 460. Then 446.41 × 1.1 − 30 = 461.051, so P_5 = 461.051, the first value above 460. The population first exceeds 460 after 5 complete years. Stopping at P_4 = 446.41 and reporting 4 years reports the last year the population was still below 460, not the first year it was above. Counting the starting value P_0 = 400 as a year of growth makes P_5 the sixth number in the list and gives 6 years, but P_0 is the population before any year has passed, so P_5 is reached after 5 years, not 6. Reading "exceed 460" as "exceed the starting population of 400" instead gives P_1 = 410, already above 400, and 1 year — but the threshold named in the question is 460, not the starting value, so always check every value against the number actually stated in the question.
- (d) £270 — Method: the £90 is a difference between two shares, so turn it into a number of parts before finding the value of one part. Working: the largest share is 3 parts and the smallest is 1 part, so the difference is 3 − 1 = 2 parts and 2 parts are worth £90; one part = £90 ÷ 2 = £45; the whole amount is 1 + 2 + 3 = 6 parts, so 6 × £45 = £270. Answer: £270. The distractors: £540 comes from treating the £90 as the value of one part and multiplying it by the 6 parts; £180 comes from finding the £45 correctly but adding only the 1-part and 3-part shares and forgetting the middle share; £135 comes from multiplying £45 by 3 and giving the largest share instead of the total.
- (a) 24 N/m² — Pressure = force ÷ area. 68.4 ÷ 2.85 = 24 N/m². 194.94 N/m² comes from multiplying the force by the area instead of dividing (68.4 × 2.85). 65.55 N/m² comes from subtracting the area from the force (68.4 − 2.85) instead of dividing. 0.04 N/m² comes from dividing the area by the force instead of the force by the area (2.85 ÷ 68.4).
- (c) 450 g — Method: use the amount of butter given to find the value of one part of the ratio, then find the mass of flour, and finally add flour and butter to get the total. Working: 180 g of butter is 2 parts, so one part is 180 ÷ 2 = 90 g. The flour is 3 parts, so 3 × 90 = 270 g, and the total mass is 270 + 180 = 450 g. So the baker can make 450 g of pastry. Distractor 270 g is only the mass of flour, forgetting to add the butter back on. Distractor 300 g comes from treating the 180 g as 3 parts instead of 2, swapping which ratio number matches the butter. Distractor 540 g comes from multiplying 180 by 3 directly instead of first finding the value of one part.
- (d) 4.7 km — Multiply the map length by the scale factor: 9.4 × 50 000 = 470 000 cm. Convert to kilometres: 470 000 cm = 4700 m = 4.7 km. Converting only to metres and calling the answer 4700 kilometres mistakes metres for kilometres. Misreading the scale as 1 : 5000 instead of 1 : 50 000, 9.4 × 5000 = 47 000 cm = 0.47 km, is ten times too small. Misplacing the decimal point in 9.4 and effectively using 94, 94 × 50 000 = 4 700 000 cm = 47 km, is ten times too big.
- (b) The ratio C : m is not constant because the formula includes a fixed charge of £3 as well as the charge per mile. — For the ratio C : m to stay constant, C must be directly proportional to m, i.e. C = km with no constant term. Because of the +3 fixed charge, C is not directly proportional to m: for example m = 1 gives C = 5.5 (ratio 5.5 : 1), while m = 10 gives C = 28 (ratio 2.8 : 1) — the ratio has changed.
- (d) 25 — Gradient = (60 − 20) ÷ (15 − 5) = 40 ÷ 10 = 4 litres per minute. Since the butt is empty at t = 0, V = 4t. Setting V = 100 gives t = 100 ÷ 4 = 25 minutes.
