Answer key
- (c) 12 m — Method: the perimeter of a rectangle is twice the sum of the length and the width, so half the perimeter is one length plus one width; split that half using the ratio. Working: half of 64 is 64 ÷ 2 = 32 m, the ratio 5:3 has 5 + 3 = 8 parts, so one part is 32 ÷ 8 = 4 m, and the width is 3 × 4 = 12 m. So the width is 12 m. Distractor 20 m is the length, 5 parts, not the width. Distractor 24 m comes from splitting the whole perimeter, 64 m, into 8 parts and multiplying by 3, forgetting to halve the perimeter first. Distractor 8 m comes from the same slip stopped one step earlier: splitting the whole perimeter into 8 parts, 64 ÷ 8 = 8, and giving that instead of the width.
- (c) 7800 kg/m³ — Method: build the conversion factor from the two unit changes separately — one for the mass, one for the volume. Working: 1 kg = 1000 g, so the mass figure is divided by 1000; 1 m = 100 cm, so 1 m³ = 100 × 100 × 100 = 1000000 cm³ and the volume figure is multiplied by 1000000. The density figure is therefore multiplied by 1000000 ÷ 1000 = 1000, giving 7.8 × 1000 = 7800. So the density of the metal is 7800 kg/m³. Distractor 780 kg/m³ comes from multiplying by 100 instead of 1000. Distractor 78000 kg/m³ comes from multiplying by 10000, an extra zero. Distractor 7.8 kg/m³ comes from not converting the units at all.
- (a) 15.3 litres — Squash : water = 2 : 9, so water is 9 ÷ 2 = 4.5 times the amount of squash. Multiply: 3.4 × 4.5 = 15.3 litres. Using the multiplier upside down — treating squash as 9 ÷ 2 times water, when it is water that is 9 ÷ 2 times squash — and calculating 3.4 × (2 ÷ 9) gives about 0.8 litres (to 1 d.p.); that would be the squash needed for 3.4 litres of water, not the water needed for 3.4 litres of squash. Adding the difference between the ratio parts, 9 − 2 = 7, to the squash amount, 3.4 + 7 = 10.4, mistakes a ratio for a fixed extra amount. Using the total number of parts, 2 + 9 = 11, so the multiplier 11 ÷ 2 = 5.5, gives 3.4 × 5.5 = 18.7 litres — that finds the total mix from the squash amount, not the water alone.
- (a) 4 days — Method: the fence is a fixed amount of work, so builders × days is constant; find that product and divide it by the new number of builders. Working: 3 × 12 = 36 builder-days of work, so with 9 builders the time is 36 ÷ 9 = 4 days. Answer: 4 days. The distractors: 6 days comes from halving the 12 days because there are more builders, rather than dividing by the factor of 3 by which the workforce has grown; 36 days is the constant product of builders and days, given as a number of days instead of being shared between the builders; 9 days comes from taking 3 days off the 12, treating three extra builders as three fewer days, which is additive rather than proportional.
- (d) £2.00 — Cost for Printer A = 200 × £0.04 = £8. Cost for Printer B = 200 × £0.05 = £10. Difference = £10 − £8 = £2.00.
- (d) 4:5 — Write the ratio pounds : dollars as 1 : 1.25. Multiply both parts by 4 to clear the decimal: 1 × 4 = 4 and 1.25 × 4 = 5, giving 4 : 5. (5:4 comes from writing the ratio the wrong way round, dollars to pounds. 1:1 comes from rounding 1.25 dollars down to the nearest whole dollar. 1:5 comes from multiplying only the dollars by 4 to clear the decimal and leaving the pounds as 1 — both parts of a ratio must be multiplied by the same number.)
- (d) 5/4 — Work out the number of free seats: 54 − 24 = 30. Form the fraction 30/24; both numbers share a factor of 6, so 30 ÷ 6 = 5 and 24 ÷ 6 = 4, giving 5/4. 4/5 comes from writing the fraction the wrong way round, as reserved over free (24/30). 5/9 comes from comparing the free seats with the total number of seats (30/54), instead of with the reserved seats. 5/6 comes from miscalculating 54 − 24 as 20 instead of 30, then forming 20/24.
- (c) 15 — Method: the number of cakes is in direct proportion to the mass of flour, so find the multiplier between the two masses and apply it to the number of cakes. Working: 6 ÷ 2 = 3, so there is three times as much flour, and 5 × 3 = 15. Answer: 15. The distractors: 10 comes from multiplying the 5 cakes by 2, the mass in the recipe, instead of by the multiplier 3; 20 comes from multiplying by the difference 6 − 2 = 4, treating a proportion problem as a difference problem; 12 comes from rounding 5 ÷ 2 down to 2 cakes per kilogram and working out 6 × 2.
- (d) 12 — First find the y-values at the two ends of the chord. At x = 2, y = 2 × 2² + 5 = 2 × 4 + 5 = 8 + 5 = 13. At x = 4, y = 2 × 4² + 5 = 2 × 16 + 5 = 32 + 5 = 37. The gradient of the chord is the change in y divided by the change in x: 37 − 13 = 24, then 24 ÷ (4 − 2) = 24 ÷ 2 = 12. Stopping after finding the change in y and not dividing by the change in x gives 24, which is not a gradient at all. Inverting the fraction, change in x divided by change in y, gives 2 ÷ 24 ≈ 0.08. Averaging the two y-values instead of finding the change between them gives (13 + 37) ÷ 2 = 50 ÷ 2 = 25. A gradient is always change in y over change in x — never the other way round, and never a single y-value.
- (d) 4:1 — Write the ratio online : in-store using the numbers in the question: 180 : 45. Divide both parts by their highest common factor, 45, to give 4 : 1. (1:4 comes from writing the ratio the wrong way round, in-store : online. 3:1 comes from subtracting the in-store orders from the online orders, 180 − 45 = 135, and comparing that to the in-store orders, 135:45, instead of dividing. 4:5 comes from comparing the online orders to the total number of orders, 180:225.)
- (b) 900 N/m² — Pressure = force ÷ area, so 45 ÷ 0.05 = 900 N/m². Working out 45 ÷ 5 = 9 misplaces the decimal point in the area, treating 0.05 m² as 5 m². Working out 45 × 0.05 = 2.25 multiplies force and area together instead of dividing. Working out 45 + 0.05 = 45.05 simply adds the two given numbers, which does not give a pressure at all. The pressure on the ground is 900 N/m².
- (b) 1:200000 — '1 cm represents 2 km' means 1 cm on the map is 2 km in real life. Convert 2 km into centimetres, the same unit as the 1: 2 km = 2000 m = 200 000 cm. So the scale is 1 : 200 000. Converting only as far as metres gives 1 : 2000 — the conversion to centimetres was never finished. Losing a zero in the conversion gives 1 : 20 000, ten times too small. Writing 1 : 2 without converting units at all compares 1 cm to 2 km directly, which is not a valid ratio since the units do not match.
- (b) 62.5% — Total parts = 5 + 3 = 8. Apples make up 5 parts, so the percentage is 5/8 × 100 = 62.5%. A student who finds the oranges' share instead gets 3/8 × 100 = 37.5%. A student who assumes an even split gets 50%. A student who inverts the fraction gets 8/5 × 100 = 160%.
- (a) 4 hours — This is inverse proportion: more pumps take less time. Multiply the original numbers to find the total pump-hours needed: 2 × 10 = 20 pump-hours. Divide by the new number of pumps: 20 ÷ 5 = 4 hours. Working out 10 × 5 ÷ 2 = 25 hours treats it as direct proportion, as if more pumps needed more time. Stopping at 20 gives the total pump-hours, not the number of hours. Working out 10 − (5 − 2) = 7 hours subtracts the extra number of pumps straight from the number of hours, treating pumps and hours as the same kind of quantity. 5 pumps take 4 hours.
- (c) 7.6 — Density = mass ÷ volume, so 356.5 ÷ 47 = 7.585..., which rounds to 7.6 g/cm³ (1 d.p.). (0.1 comes from dividing the volume by the mass instead of the mass by the volume, the wrong way round. 7.5 comes from rounding 7.585 down instead of up to 1 decimal place. 403.5 comes from adding the mass and the volume instead of dividing.)
