Answer key
- (b) 6 litres — Method: find the volume of the cuboid in cm³, then change cm³ into litres using 1 litre = 1000 cm³. Working: 30 × 20 × 10 = 6000 cm³, and 6000 ÷ 1000 = 6. Answer: 6 litres. The distractors: 60 litres comes from using 1 litre = 100 cm³; 600 litres comes from using 1 litre = 10 cm³; 0.6 litres comes from using 1 litre = 10 000 cm³.
- (c) 20 cm — Convert 5 km to centimetres: 5 km = 5000 m = 500 000 cm. Divide by the scale factor: 500 000 ÷ 25 000 = 20, giving 20 cm. Converting only as far as metres, 5000 ÷ 25 000 = 0.2, gives 0.2 cm — the conversion to centimetres was never finished. Dropping a zero in the division gives 2 cm, ten times too small. Misreading the scale as 1 : 2500 instead of 1 : 25 000 gives 500 000 ÷ 2500 = 200 cm, ten times too big.
- (d) 4:1 — Write the ratio online : in-store using the numbers in the question: 180 : 45. Divide both parts by their highest common factor, 45, to give 4 : 1. (1:4 comes from writing the ratio the wrong way round, in-store : online. 3:1 comes from subtracting the in-store orders from the online orders, 180 − 45 = 135, and comparing that to the in-store orders, 135:45, instead of dividing. 4:5 comes from comparing the online orders to the total number of orders, 180:225.)
- (a) 12 — Speed × time is constant: k = 20 × 15 = 300. At 25 pages per minute, the time is 300 ÷ 25 = 12 minutes. Getting 18.75 comes from treating speed and time as directly proportional and working out 15 × 25 ÷ 20 instead of dividing k by the new speed. Getting 20 comes from adding the increase in speed (25 − 20 = 5) onto the time (15 + 5 = 20). Getting 10 comes from subtracting that same increase in speed from the time (15 − 5 = 10).
- (d) 4.7 km — Multiply the map length by the scale factor: 9.4 × 50 000 = 470 000 cm. Convert to kilometres: 470 000 cm = 4700 m = 4.7 km. Converting only to metres and calling the answer 4700 kilometres mistakes metres for kilometres. Misreading the scale as 1 : 5000 instead of 1 : 50 000, 9.4 × 5000 = 47 000 cm = 0.47 km, is ten times too small. Misplacing the decimal point in 9.4 and effectively using 94, 94 × 50 000 = 4 700 000 cm = 47 km, is ten times too big.
- (b) 1500 m — Method: multiply the map length by the scale to get the real length in centimetres, then divide by 100 to change centimetres into metres. Working: 3 × 50 000 = 150 000 cm, and 150 000 ÷ 100 = 1500. Answer: 1500 m. The distractors: 15000 m comes from dividing the 150 000 cm by 10 instead of 100; 150 m comes from dividing by 1000, the conversion for kilometres; 50000 m comes from writing the scale itself as the answer and ignoring the 3 cm measured on the map.
- (c) 2 : 5 — The point (4, 10) gives x = 4, y = 10, so x : y = 4 : 10. Dividing both parts by their highest common factor, 2, gives 2 : 5 in simplest form. Inverting the whole ratio gives 5 : 2, which is y : x instead of x : y. Dividing only the x-part by 2 and leaving the y-part as 10 gives 2 : 10, but scaling one part on its own changes the ratio: 2 : 10 is the same as 1 : 5, not 4 : 10. Dividing only the y-part by 2 and leaving the x-part as 4 gives 4 : 5, the same one-sided mistake made on the other part of the ratio.
- (d) 2748 — A 7% increase each year means the value becomes 100% + 7% = 107% of the previous year's value, and 107% = 1.07, so the multiplier is 1.07. Multiply by 1.07 for each of the 2 years: 2400 × 1.07 × 1.07 = 2747.76, which rounds to 2748. (2736 comes from using simple growth instead of compound: 2400 + 2 × (2400 × 0.07) = 2736. 2568 is the population after only 1 year, 2400 × 1.07, forgetting the second year's growth. 2747 comes from rounding 2747.76 down instead of up to the nearest whole number.)
- (b) 13/2 — Put the number of pages in the novel over the number of pages in the comic: 312/48. Divide both numbers by their highest common factor, 24: 312÷24 = 13, 48÷24 = 2, giving 13/2. (2/13 comes from writing the page counts the wrong way round. 11/2 comes from finding the difference in the page counts, 312 − 48 = 264, and writing it as a fraction of the comic's page count, 264/48. 13/15 comes from comparing the novel's page count to the total number of pages in both books, 312/360.)
- (d) The 750 g box, at 36p per 100 g — Work out the cost per 100 g of each box. 750 g box: 270p ÷ 7.5 = 36p per 100 g. 500 g box: 195p ÷ 5 = 39p per 100 g. The lower cost per 100 g is the better value, so the 750 g box at 36p per 100 g is the answer. Choosing the 500 g box at 39p per 100 g gets the maths right but picks the higher unit price, not realising a smaller cost per 100 g is the better deal. Choosing the 500 g box because £1.95 is lower than £2.70 compares the total prices without allowing for the different pack sizes at all. Working out 270 ÷ 5 = 54p divides the 750 g box's price by the wrong number of hundred-grams (the 500 g box's), giving a rate that belongs to neither box. The 750 g box, at 36p per 100 g, is the better value.
- (a) 100 — The difference between the parts of the ratio is 7 − 3 = 4 parts, and this is worth 40 beads. Divide to find one part: 40 ÷ 4 = 10. The total number of parts is 7 + 3 = 10, so the total number of beads is 10 × 10 = 100. (40 is just the given difference between gold and silver, not the total. 70 is the number of gold beads only, using 7 parts. 30 is the number of silver beads only, using 3 parts.)
- (b) 2.5 hours — Method: when two objects move in opposite directions the gap between them grows at the sum of their speeds, so divide the required gap by that combined rate. Working: 80 + 60 = 140 km of gap each hour, and 350 ÷ 140 = 2.5. Answer: 2.5 hours. The distractors: 17.5 hours comes from subtracting the speeds, 80 − 60 = 20, which is the rate for two cars travelling in the same direction; 5 hours comes from using the mean of the two speeds, 70 km/h, instead of their sum; 4.375 hours comes from dividing 350 by 80 and ignoring the second car altogether.
- (c) 920 kg/m³ — Convert each unit in turn. Mass: 1 g = 0.001 kg. Volume: 1 m³ = 100 × 100 × 100 = 1 000 000 cm³. So a density of 0.92 g per cm³ is 0.92 × 1 000 000 = 920 000 g in every cubic metre, and 920 000 g = 920 000 × 0.001 = 920 kg. The two conversions leave a single factor of 1 000 000 × 0.001 = 1000, so in one step multiply g/cm³ by 1000: 0.92 × 1000 = 920 kg/m³. Multiplying by 100 instead of 1000 gives 92 kg/m³, using the factor for 1 m² rather than 1 m³ of volume. Multiplying by 10 instead of 1000 gives 9.2 kg/m³, moving the decimal point one place for a conversion that moves it three. Dividing by 1000 instead of multiplying gives 0.00092 kg/m³, going the wrong way between the units — a kilogram is heavier than a gram, but a cubic metre is a million times bigger than a cubic centimetre, so the number must get larger, not smaller. The liquid's density is 920 kg/m³.
- (d) 2:5 — The ratio of the y-values equals the ratio of the coefficients of x, since x cancels: 2x : 5x = 2 : 5.
- (c) 20% — Method: percentage increase = (increase ÷ original) × 100. Working: the increase is 54 − 45 = 9, and 9 ÷ 45 = 0.2, so the percentage increase is 0.2 × 100 = 20. Answer: 20%. The distractors: 9% comes from writing the actual increase as a percentage; 16.7% comes from dividing by the new value 54 instead of the original 45; 120% is the multiplier 1.2 written as a change rather than the change itself.
