- 1.A teacher records the number of pets owned by each of 25 pupils in a class; each pupil owns 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4 pets. The teacher wants to show how many pupils own each number of pets. Write down the most suitable type of chart for this data, and give a reason for your answer.
- 2.A pictogram shows the number of cars sold by a garage in Plymouth each month, where each whole car symbol represents 8 cars sold and a half symbol represents 4 cars. March shows 3 whole symbols and one half symbol. Work out how many cars were sold in March.
- 3.A dual bar chart shows the number of hours of rain recorded in Leeds and in Bristol on each of four days. Leeds: Monday 3 hours, Tuesday 5 hours, Wednesday 2 hours, Thursday 4 hours. Bristol: Monday 4 hours, Tuesday 4 hours, Wednesday 6 hours, Thursday 2 hours. Work out the greatest amount, in hours, by which Bristol's rainfall exceeded Leeds's rainfall on a single day.
- 4.A frequency polygon for the mass, in kg, of 40 parcels at a delivery depot is drawn by plotting one point at the midpoint of each class, joined by straight lines: (5, 6), (15, 10), (25, 16), (35, 6), (45, 2). Every class has a width of 10 kg. Write down the modal class.
- 5.A garden centre's sales, in thousands of pounds, at the end of each quarter last year were: quarter 1 — 18, quarter 2 — 34, quarter 3 — 30, quarter 4 — 22. Work out the increase in sales from quarter 1 to the quarter with the highest sales.
- 6.A two-way table records whether each of the 30 pupils in a class passed maths and whether they passed science. 18 pupils passed maths, 12 pupils passed science and 8 pupils passed both. Work out how many pupils passed at least one of the two subjects.
- 7.A stacked bar for one day at a café in Norwich shows total drink sales of 50 drinks, split into three parts: 22 were tea, 15 were coffee and the rest were hot chocolate. Work out the number of hot chocolates sold.

- (a) A vertical line chart (discrete numerical data) — The number of pets is discrete numerical data — whole-number values such as 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4 — recorded for one variable, so a vertical line chart is the chart specified for this kind of data. A bar chart is used for categorical data, such as favourite colour, not numerical values counted like this. A pie chart shows proportions of a whole and does not show the frequency of each separate value. A scatter graph compares two different variables against each other, and only one variable, the number of pets, is recorded here.
- (c) 28 — Method: multiply the number of whole symbols by the value of one symbol, then add the value of any half symbol shown. Working: 3 whole symbols represent 3 × 8 = 24 cars. The half symbol represents 4 cars. Total cars sold in March = 24 + 4 = 28. Leaving out the half symbol, 3 × 8 = 24, undercounts by exactly the value of that half symbol. Treating the half symbol as if it were a full symbol, 4 × 8 = 32, overcounts because it doubles the value the half symbol is worth. Giving 3.5 reports the number of symbols shown, not the number of cars they represent — the key still needs to be applied. Always apply the key to every symbol shown, including a half symbol, rather than reading off the symbol count itself.
- (b) 4 — The difference, Bristol minus Leeds, on each day is: Monday 4 − 3 = 1, Tuesday 4 − 5 = −1, Wednesday 6 − 2 = 4, Thursday 2 − 4 = −2. The greatest amount by which Bristol exceeded Leeds is 4 hours, on Wednesday. Choosing 1 takes Monday's smaller positive difference instead of the greatest one. Choosing 2 takes the size of Thursday's difference, but that is the amount by which Leeds exceeded Bristol, the opposite direction to the one asked for. Choosing 6 takes Bristol's raw figure on Wednesday without subtracting Leeds's 2 hours first.
- (c) 20 kg ≤ mass < 30 kg — The modal class is the class with the highest frequency. Reading the plotted points, the frequencies are 6, 10, 16, 6 and 2, so the highest frequency is 16, plotted at the midpoint 25. A class of width 10 centred on 25 runs from 25 − 5 = 20 to 25 + 5 = 30, so the modal class is 20 kg ≤ mass < 30 kg. Writing '25 kg' gives only the midpoint, not the class — the modal class is an interval, not a single value. '10 kg ≤ mass < 20 kg' is the class before the peak, centred on 15, which has frequency 10, not the highest. '30 kg ≤ mass < 40 kg' is the class after the peak, centred on 35, which has frequency 6, not the highest.
- (a) £16,000 — Method: first find the quarter with the highest sales figure, then subtract quarter 1's sales from it — remembering that every figure is given in THOUSANDS of pounds. Giving £34,000 reads off the highest sales figure on its own, without subtracting quarter 1's sales — that is the highest quarter's total, not the increase.
