- 1.Four pairs of variables are listed below. Write down the pair that you would expect to show negative correlation.
- 2.Four pairs of variables are listed below. Write down the pair that you would expect to show no correlation.
- 3.The masses, m kg, of 160 fish caught by a trawler in one day are grouped into classes of unequal width: 0 ≤ m < 10, 40 fish; 10 ≤ m < 30, 60 fish; 30 ≤ m < 45, 30 fish; 45 ≤ m < 50, 30 fish. A histogram is to be drawn from this table. Which set of frequency densities, listed in the same order as the classes above, is correct?
- 4.In a random sample of 40 pupils at a school, 6 are left-handed. The school has 900 pupils. Work out an estimate for the number of left-handed pupils in the school.
- 5.A scatter graph has 50 points. Most of them lie close to a rising line of best fit, but two of them lie a long way from that line. Write down how those two points should be treated.
- 6.A Year 10 class has 20 boys with a mean height of 150 cm and 10 girls with a mean height of 168 cm. Work out the mean height of all 30 pupils in the class.
- 7.A scatter graph shows the midday temperature, x °C, and the number of ice creams sold at a seaside kiosk, y. The line of best fit is y = 3x − 20. Give a reason why the y-intercept of this line of best fit is not a sensible estimate of the number of ice creams sold.y = 3x − 20
- 8.A histogram shows the ages, in years, of 250 members of a running club. The bar for the class 10 ≤ age < 20 has a frequency density of 4.5 members per year, the bar for 20 ≤ age < 35 has a frequency density of 6 members per year, and the bar for 50 ≤ age < 70 has a frequency density of 2.75 members per year. Work out the frequency of the remaining class, 35 ≤ age < 50.
- 9.A scatter graph of the number of ice creams sold at a seaside kiosk in Bournemouth and the number of sunburn cases treated at a nearby pharmacy, recorded on the same 30 days, shows strong positive correlation. Which statement about this correlation is correct?
- 10.A gym in Cardiff has a scatter graph of the number of training sessions, x, attended by each member and the weight lost, y kg. The line of best fit is y = 0.4x + 1. Members want to lose at least 9 kg. Using the line of best fit, work out the least whole number of sessions needed to reach this target.y = 0.4x + 1
- 11.A council wants to find out what all residents of a town think about a new cycle lane. It posts a survey only on its website and asks people to fill it in online. Give a reason why this sample is likely to be biased.
- 12.A school has 1200 pupils. A teacher wants to take a random sample of 60 of them. Write down which of these methods gives a random sample.
- 13.Priya travels to work by one of two routes and records her journey times, in minutes, over several weeks. Route 1 has a median of 34 minutes and an interquartile range of 22 minutes. Route 2 has a median of 41 minutes and an interquartile range of 6 minutes. Priya wants the more reliable route for getting to an important meeting on time. Which route should she choose, and why?
- 14.A school has 1,000 pupils. A student wants to estimate how many of them walk to school, so she asks 8 pupils in her own class. She says her sample is large enough to give a reliable estimate for the whole school. Is she right? Give a reason for your answer.
- 15.A garden centre records the heights, in cm, of eleven seedlings. In order, the heights are 5, 9, x, 17, 20, 24, 28, 31, 35, 40, 44, where x is unknown. The interquartile range of the eleven heights is 19 cm. Work out the value of x.
