- 2.For each of 30 fires in one county, the number of fire engines sent and the cost of the damage were recorded. The scatter graph of the data shows strong positive correlation. A newspaper prints the headline "Sending more fire engines causes more damage". Is the newspaper right? Give a reason for your answer.
- 3.A composite (stacked) bar for a charity bake sale in Durham shows the number of cakes sold, split into three types. The bar has a total height of 80 cakes: 34 were sponge cakes, 26 were chocolate cakes and the rest were fruit cakes. Work out the percentage of the cakes sold that were fruit cakes.
- 4.A bus company records the delay, d minutes, of 250 buses: 0 ≤ d < 2, 60 buses; 2 ≤ d < 5, 90 buses; 5 ≤ d < 10, 75 buses; 10 ≤ d < 20, 25 buses. The company refunds the fare whenever a bus is more than 8 minutes late. Estimate the number of refunds it must pay.
- 5.A scatter graph of taxi journeys in Bristol shows the distance, x miles, and the fare, y pounds. The line of best fit is y = 2x + 3.50. Work out the estimated fare for a journey of 6 miles, using the line of best fit.y = 2x + 3.5
- 6.A box plot for the amount of pocket money, in pounds, saved by 30 students in a month is based on a lower quartile of £18 and an upper quartile of £42. A value above upper quartile + 1.5 × interquartile range is considered an outlier. Amara saved £80 in the month. Determine whether Amara's saving is an outlier.
- 7.The numbers 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 have a mean of 7 and a median of 7. The value 100 is now added to the list. Which measure is changed more by adding 100, and why?
- 8.The mean of five test scores is 68. Four of the scores are 55, 62, 74 and 80. Work out the fifth score.
- 9.A pie chart shows how 180 shoppers at a supermarket paid for their shopping. The sector for card payments has an angle of 90° at the centre. Work out how many of the 180 shoppers paid by card.
- 10.A teacher records the number of pets owned by each of 25 pupils in a class; each pupil owns 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4 pets. The teacher wants to show how many pupils own each number of pets. Write down the most suitable type of chart for this data, and give a reason for your answer.
- 11.The times taken, in minutes, by 30 runners in a Portsmouth fun run are grouped in this table: 0 < t ≤ 20 — 5 runners, 20 < t ≤ 40 — 10 runners, 40 < t ≤ 60 — 10 runners, 60 < t ≤ 80 — 5 runners. Work out an estimate for the mean time, in minutes.
- 12.In a histogram of the heights, h cm, of 90 seedlings, the class 12 ≤ h < 18 contains 36 seedlings. Work out the frequency density for this class.
- 13.A gym in Cardiff has a scatter graph of the number of training sessions, x, attended by each member and the weight lost, y kg. The line of best fit is y = 0.4x + 1. Members want to lose at least 9 kg. Using the line of best fit, work out the least whole number of sessions needed to reach this target.y = 0.4x + 1
- 14.A charity shop in Leicester made £2,400 in one month. A pie chart shows how this was spent: repairs took up an angle of 90°, wages took up an angle of 150°, and the rest was other costs. Work out how much was spent on wages.
- 15.A histogram shows the speeds, v mph, of 100 vehicles passing a checkpoint. The bar for 0 ≤ v < 20 has a frequency density of 1 vehicle per mph, the bar for 20 ≤ v < 30 has a frequency density of 3 vehicles per mph, the bar for 30 ≤ v < 50 has a frequency density of 2 vehicles per mph, and the bar for 50 ≤ v < 70 has a frequency density of 0.5 vehicles per mph. Estimate the mean speed of the vehicles.
