- 1.A two-way table records the favourite subject, Maths or Art, of 60 pupils in Year 10, and whether each pupil is left-handed or right-handed. 9 of the 60 pupils are left-handed, and 6 of those left-handed pupils prefer Art. In total, 24 of the 60 pupils prefer Art. A pupil is chosen at random from the 60. Work out the probability that the pupil is right-handed and prefers Art.
- 2.A vet records the masses, m kg, of 30 dogs at a clinic in Preston: 0 < m ≤ 10 — 11 dogs, 10 < m ≤ 20 — 5 dogs, 20 < m ≤ 30 — 5 dogs, 30 < m ≤ 40 — 9 dogs. Work out an estimate for the mean mass, in kg, using the midpoint of each class interval.
- 3.A gym in Cardiff has a scatter graph of the number of training sessions, x, attended by each member and the weight lost, y kg. The line of best fit is y = 0.4x + 1. Members want to lose at least 9 kg. Using the line of best fit, work out the least whole number of sessions needed to reach this target.y = 0.4x + 1
- 4.In a random sample of 40 pupils at a school, 6 are left-handed. The school has 900 pupils. Work out an estimate for the number of left-handed pupils in the school.
- 5.A vet records the masses, m kg, of the dogs seen in one week as a histogram. The bar for 0 ≤ m < 5 has a frequency density of 4 per kg, the bar for 5 ≤ m < 15 has a frequency density of 2.6 per kg, and the bar for 15 ≤ m < 40 has a frequency density of 1.2 per kg. Work out the total number of dogs seen that week.
- 6.In a scatter graph of the age, in years, and the wingspan, in cm, of 20 birds of the same species, all the points lie close to a rising line of best fit except one, which lies a long way below the line. That bird was later found to have a damaged wing. Give a reason why this point should not be used when drawing the line of best fit.
- 7.A scatter graph of the number of hours, x, that pupils revised against their test score, y, has the line of best fit y = 2.5x + 15. Amelia wants a score of at least 80. Work out the least whole number of hours of revision the line of best fit suggests she needs.y = 2.5x + 15
- 8.A town council wants to find out about the eating habits of the people who live in the town. It asks only the members of a local sports club. Give a reason why this sample is biased.
- 9.A histogram shows the ages, in years, of 250 members of a running club. The bar for the class 10 ≤ age < 20 has a frequency density of 4.5 members per year, the bar for 20 ≤ age < 35 has a frequency density of 6 members per year, and the bar for 50 ≤ age < 70 has a frequency density of 2.75 members per year. Work out the frequency of the remaining class, 35 ≤ age < 50.
- 10.A survey of 25 pupils in Derby records how many siblings each has: 0 siblings — 6 pupils, 1 sibling — 10 pupils, 2 siblings — 6 pupils, 3 siblings — 3 pupils. Calculate the mean number of siblings.
- 11.Write down the statement that correctly describes the difference between correlation and causation.
- 12.There are 10,000 pupils in a city. A researcher picks a sample of 500 of them by drawing names at random from a list of every pupil in the city. Give the reason why this method gives a representative sample.
- 13.A scatter graph shows the number of hours of sunshine, x, and the number of visitors, y, at an outdoor swimming pool in Torquay on each of 15 days. The line of best fit passes through the points (5, 150) and (15, 350). Work out the estimated number of visitors on a day with 8 hours of sunshine, using the line of best fit.
- 14.A council in Leeds wants to know what local people think about letting shops stay open later in the evening. It rings landline telephone numbers between 10 am and 2 pm on a Tuesday. Write down which group is most likely to be under-represented in the sample, and give a reason for your answer.
- 15.In a histogram of the distances, d metres, thrown by some athletes, the bar covering 20 ≤ d < 60 has a constant frequency density of 1.8 per metre. Estimate the number of throws of at least 20 metres but less than 35 metres.
