- 1.Priya travels to work by one of two routes and records her journey times, in minutes, over several weeks. Route 1 has a median of 34 minutes and an interquartile range of 22 minutes. Route 2 has a median of 41 minutes and an interquartile range of 6 minutes. Priya wants the more reliable route for getting to an important meeting on time. Which route should she choose, and why?
- 2.A charity shop in Leicester made £2,400 in one month. A pie chart shows how this was spent: repairs took up an angle of 90°, wages took up an angle of 150°, and the rest was other costs. Work out how much was spent on wages.
- 3.The delivery times, in minutes, of 15 parcels are given in order: 5, 8, 10, 12, 14, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, 29, 31, 34. Work out the interquartile range of these times.
- 4.A quality inspector weighs a random sample of 50 packets of crisps from one day's production and finds their mean mass is 32.4 g. The factory makes 20,000 packets that day. Work out an estimate for the total mass, in kg, of all the packets made that day.
- 5.The times, t minutes, taken by 120 runners to finish a fun run are summarised by these cumulative frequencies: t < 20, 8 runners; t < 30, 26 runners; t < 40, 74 runners; t < 50, 110 runners; t < 60, 120 runners. Work out the number of runners who took 40 minutes or longer to finish.
- 6.A box plot for the amount of pocket money, in pounds, saved by 30 students in a month is based on a lower quartile of £18 and an upper quartile of £42. A value above upper quartile + 1.5 × interquartile range is considered an outlier. Amara saved £80 in the month. Determine whether Amara's saving is an outlier.
- 7.A gym in Cardiff has a scatter graph of the number of training sessions, x, attended by each member and the weight lost, y kg. The line of best fit is y = 0.4x + 1. Members want to lose at least 9 kg. Using the line of best fit, work out the least whole number of sessions needed to reach this target.y = 0.4x + 1
- 8.A scatter graph shows the number of hours of sunshine, x, and the number of visitors, y, at an outdoor swimming pool in Torquay on each of 15 days. The line of best fit passes through the points (5, 150) and (15, 350). Work out the estimated number of visitors on a day with 8 hours of sunshine, using the line of best fit.
- 9.There are 10,000 pupils in a city. A researcher picks a sample of 500 of them by drawing names at random from a list of every pupil in the city. Give the reason why this method gives a representative sample.
- 10.The numbers 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 have a mean of 7 and a median of 7. The value 100 is now added to the list. Which measure is changed more by adding 100, and why?
- 11.The masses, m kg, of 80 sacks of grain are summarised by these cumulative frequencies: m < 10, 6 sacks; m < 20, 22 sacks; m < 30, 58 sacks; m < 40, 74 sacks; m < 50, 80 sacks. Use interpolation to estimate the median mass.
- 12.A cumulative frequency graph for the diameters, d mm, of 320 ball bearings is plotted from these points (upper class boundary, cumulative frequency): (10, 30), (20, 90), (30, 190), (40, 280), (50, 320). Estimate the diameter below which 90% of the ball bearings measure.
- 13.Four pairs of variables are listed below. Write down the pair that you would expect to show no correlation.
- 14.A school has 1,500 pupils. The head teacher takes a random sample of 150 of them from the school register and asks how long they spend on homework. Rory says the sample is too small for the result to mean anything. Is Rory right? Give a reason for your answer.
