- 1.Write down the statement that correctly describes the difference between correlation and causation.
- 2.A council wants to find out what all residents of a town think about a new cycle lane. It posts a survey only on its website and asks people to fill it in online. Give a reason why this sample is likely to be biased.
- 3.A charity shop in Leicester made £2,400 in one month. A pie chart shows how this was spent: repairs took up an angle of 90°, wages took up an angle of 150°, and the rest was other costs. Work out how much was spent on wages.
- 4.A recruitment agency in Manchester compares the weekly pay, in pounds, of seven employees at two branches. Branch A: £480, £495, £500, £505, £510, £515, £1,200. Branch B: £480, £490, £500, £510, £520, £530, £540. An advert for the agency claims 'Branch A pays more on average.' Decide whether this claim is fairly supported, using an appropriate average, and choose the correct conclusion.
- 5.The times, t minutes, taken by 120 runners to finish a fun run are summarised by these cumulative frequencies: t < 20, 8 runners; t < 30, 26 runners; t < 40, 74 runners; t < 50, 110 runners; t < 60, 120 runners. Work out the number of runners who took 40 minutes or longer to finish.
- 6.A two-way table records whether each of 40 people at a gym in Sheffield prefers weights or cardio, and whether they are male or female. 24 of the 40 people are female. 15 of the males prefer cardio. 10 of the females prefer weights. Work out the total number of people who prefer cardio.
- 7.A survey of 25 pupils in Derby records how many siblings each has: 0 siblings — 6 pupils, 1 sibling — 10 pupils, 2 siblings — 6 pupils, 3 siblings — 3 pupils. Calculate the mean number of siblings.
- 8.Forty pupils in class P and forty pupils in class Q each solved a puzzle. The times, in seconds, were summarised using cumulative frequency. For class P the lower quartile is 24, the median is 38 and the upper quartile is 46. For class Q the lower quartile is 30, the median is 35 and the upper quartile is 44. Write down the statement that correctly compares the two classes.
- 9.A scatter graph shows the number of hours of sunshine, x, and the number of visitors, y, at an outdoor swimming pool in Torquay on each of 15 days. The line of best fit passes through the points (5, 150) and (15, 350). Work out the estimated number of visitors on a day with 8 hours of sunshine, using the line of best fit.
- 10.A Year 10 class has 20 boys with a mean height of 150 cm and 10 girls with a mean height of 168 cm. Work out the mean height of all 30 pupils in the class.
- 11.The masses, m kg, of 160 fish caught by a trawler in one day are grouped into classes of unequal width: 0 ≤ m < 10, 40 fish; 10 ≤ m < 30, 60 fish; 30 ≤ m < 45, 30 fish; 45 ≤ m < 50, 30 fish. A histogram is to be drawn from this table. Which set of frequency densities, listed in the same order as the classes above, is correct?
- 12.In a histogram of the lengths, x cm, of some rods, the bar for 10 ≤ x < 30 has a frequency density of 3 per cm. The bar for 30 ≤ x < 45 is twice as tall as the bar for 10 ≤ x < 30. Work out the number of rods with a length in the class 30 ≤ x < 45.
- 13.The distances, d km, cycled by 180 riders in a charity sportive are summarised by these cumulative frequencies: d < 30, 20 riders; d < 60, 60 riders; d < 80, 120 riders; d < 100, 160 riders; d < 130, 180 riders. Use interpolation to estimate the median distance cycled.
- 14.A composite (stacked) bar for a charity bake sale in Durham shows the number of cakes sold, split into three types. The bar has a total height of 80 cakes: 34 were sponge cakes, 26 were chocolate cakes and the rest were fruit cakes. Work out the percentage of the cakes sold that were fruit cakes.
- 15.A histogram shows the speeds, v mph, of 100 vehicles passing a checkpoint. The bar for 0 ≤ v < 20 has a frequency density of 1 vehicle per mph, the bar for 20 ≤ v < 30 has a frequency density of 3 vehicles per mph, the bar for 30 ≤ v < 50 has a frequency density of 2 vehicles per mph, and the bar for 50 ≤ v < 70 has a frequency density of 0.5 vehicles per mph. Estimate the mean speed of the vehicles.
