- 1.Four pairs of variables are listed below. Write down the pair that you would expect to show no correlation.
- 2.The masses, m grams, of 100 apples are grouped like this: 100 ≤ m < 120, 10 apples; 120 ≤ m < 140, 30 apples; 140 ≤ m < 160, 40 apples; 160 ≤ m < 200, 20 apples. Estimate the median mass.
- 3.A histogram shows the times, t minutes, taken by 120 visitors to complete an escape room. The bar for 0 ≤ t < 10 has a frequency density of 5 visitors per minute, the bar for 10 ≤ t < 20 has a frequency density of 2 visitors per minute, the bar for 20 ≤ t < 40 has a frequency density of 1.5 visitors per minute, and the bar for 40 ≤ t < 60 has a frequency density of 1 visitor per minute. Work out which class contains the median time.
- 4.The weekly wages of the five people who work at a small garage in Norwich are £420, £440, £460, £480 and £1,500. Write down which average better describes a typical wage at this garage, and give a reason for your answer.
- 5.A scatter graph shows the midday temperature, x °C, and the number of ice creams sold at a seaside kiosk, y. The line of best fit is y = 3x − 20. Give a reason why the y-intercept of this line of best fit is not a sensible estimate of the number of ice creams sold.y = 3x − 20
- 6.The mean of three numbers is 50. A fourth number, 100, is added to the set. Work out the mean of the four numbers.
- 7.A stacked bar for one day at a café in Norwich shows total drink sales of 50 drinks, split into three parts: 22 were tea, 15 were coffee and the rest were hot chocolate. Work out the number of hot chocolates sold.
- 8.A vet records the masses, m kg, of 30 dogs at a clinic in Preston: 0 < m ≤ 10 — 11 dogs, 10 < m ≤ 20 — 5 dogs, 20 < m ≤ 30 — 5 dogs, 30 < m ≤ 40 — 9 dogs. Work out an estimate for the mean mass, in kg, using the midpoint of each class interval.
- 9.A café owner in Brighton records the midday temperature, x °C, and the number of hot chocolates sold, y, on 12 days. The temperatures recorded run from 4 °C to 18 °C, and the line of best fit is y = −3x + 74. The forecast for tomorrow gives a midday temperature of 12 °C. Work out the number the line of best fit predicts, and write down how much confidence the owner can have in it.y = -3x + 74
- 10.A two-way table records whether each of the 30 pupils in a class passed maths and whether they passed science. 18 pupils passed maths, 12 pupils passed science and 8 pupils passed both. Work out how many pupils passed at least one of the two subjects.
- 11.The times, in seconds, taken by 11 runners to finish a race are given in order: 40, 42, 45, 47, 50, 52, 55, 58, 60, 63, 65. Work out the upper quartile of these times.
- 12.Box plots summarise the test scores of two classes. Class X: minimum 20, lower quartile 45, median 60, upper quartile 70, maximum 95. Class Y: minimum 35, lower quartile 50, median 58, upper quartile 65, maximum 80. Which statement about the two classes is correct?
- 13.A factory makes 4,000 light bulbs a day. In a random sample of 80 of one day's bulbs, 3 were faulty. Work out an estimate for the number of faulty bulbs the factory makes in a day.
- 14.A bus company records the delay, d minutes, of 250 buses: 0 ≤ d < 2, 60 buses; 2 ≤ d < 5, 90 buses; 5 ≤ d < 10, 75 buses; 10 ≤ d < 20, 25 buses. The company refunds the fare whenever a bus is more than 8 minutes late. Estimate the number of refunds it must pay.
- 15.A sports centre in Ipswich has 2,000 members. It wants to know what its members think of its opening hours, so it asks a random sample of 100 of them. Write down what the population is in this survey.
