Angle facts, parallel lines and polygons is content statement G3 of the DfE GCSE mathematics subject content, in the geometry area. It is on both tiers, and it is examined without a calculator. What the specification says
The DfE subject content for GCSE mathematics states, verbatim: "Apply the properties of angles at a point, angles at a point on a straight line, vertically opposite angles; understand and use alternate and corresponding angles on parallel lines; derive and use the sum of angles in a triangle (e.g. to deduce and use the angle sum in any polygon, and to derive properties of regular polygons)." (statement G3). Every awarding organisation — Pearson Edexcel, AQA and OCR — must cover it, so the wording is the same whichever specification your school follows.
Tier
Both tiers. This statement is Foundation content, which means Higher students are examined on it too — Higher is Foundation plus more, never instead of it.
Calculator
This is non-calculator territory. Questions on it belong naturally on Paper 1, where written method is all you have — so practise it that way rather than with a calculator to hand.
Common mistakes
- Confusing alternate angles (the Z shape, equal) with co-interior angles (the C shape, adding to 180°).
- Using the 360° total for angles around a point where 180° on a straight line is what applies.
- Taking the interior angle sum of any polygon as 360°. It is (n − 2) × 180°; it is the exterior angles that sum to 360°.
- Quoting the answer without the reason. 'Corresponding angles on parallel lines are equal' is what earns the second mark.
