Geometric terms, notation and diagrams is content statement G1 of the DfE GCSE mathematics subject content, in the geometry area. It is on both tiers, and it is examined without a calculator. What the specification says
The DfE subject content for GCSE mathematics states, verbatim: "Use conventional terms and notations: points, lines, vertices, edges, planes, parallel lines, perpendicular lines, right angles, polygons, regular polygons and polygons with reflection and/or rotation symmetries; use the standard conventions for labelling and referring to the sides and angles of triangles; draw diagrams from written description." (statement G1). Every awarding organisation — Pearson Edexcel, AQA and OCR — must cover it, so the wording is the same whichever specification your school follows.
Tier
Both tiers. This statement is Foundation content, which means Higher students are examined on it too — Higher is Foundation plus more, never instead of it.
Calculator
This is non-calculator territory. Questions on it belong naturally on Paper 1, where written method is all you have — so practise it that way rather than with a calculator to hand.
Common mistakes
- Reading angle ABC with the vertex somewhere other than B. The middle letter is always the vertex.
- Assuming a polygon is regular because it looks it. Regular means all sides and all angles equal, and the question has to say so.
- Drawing a diagram from a description without keeping the stated measurements, then measuring your own drawing to answer.

Both. It is Foundation content, so it can be asked on either tier.
