Unit Converter

Length, mass, volume, area and time — with the full working shown.

2.5 Kilometre = 2,500 Metre
A Kilometre is bigger than a Metre: 1 Kilometre = 1,000 Metre. Converting from a bigger unit to a smaller one — multiply: 2.5 × 1,000 = 2,500.

Conversions worth remembering

  • Length: 1 km = 1,000 m · 1 m = 100 cm · 1 cm = 10 mm · 1 mile ≈ 1.609 km
  • Mass: 1 tonne = 1,000 kg · 1 kg = 1,000 g · 1 stone ≈ 6.35 kg · 1 lb ≈ 454 g
  • Volume: 1 litre = 1,000 ml = 1,000 cm³ · 1 m³ = 1,000 litres · 1 gallon ≈ 4.546 litres
  • Area: 1 m² = 10,000 cm² · 1 hectare = 10,000 m² · 1 km² = 100 hectares
  • Time: 1 hour = 60 minutes = 3,600 seconds · 1 day = 24 hours

Watch out with area units: going from metres to centimetres the factor is 100, but from square metres to square centimetres the factor is 100 squared — that is, 10,000.

How to use it

  • Choose a category: length, mass, volume, area or time.
  • Enter a value and choose which unit to convert from and to.
  • Get the result along with the conversion factor and the reasoning — multiply or divide, and why.
