✏️ Paper 1 non-calculator warm-up — Foundation
Paper 1 is worth exactly as much as each calculator paper, and it is the one most Foundation students practise least. This sheet is a warm-up for it: twenty questions drawn from the number and ratio statements that turn up on the non-calculator paper year after year — column arithmetic with decimals and negatives, adding and subtracting fractions, percentages of amounts, priority of operations, factors and multiples, and estimating by rounding to one significant figure. Do it with a pen and nothing else. Twenty-five minutes is about right, but do not stop early if you need longer; the point is to find out which of these have quietly gone rusty, not to score well. Mark it, then go back to the topic page for whichever one cost you the most.
- 1.Freya uses her calculator to work out 7² and writes down 14. Work out the correct value of 7².
- 2.Light travels at 2.998 × 10⁸ metres per second. A distant object in space is 3.1 × 10¹⁵ metres from Earth. Work out an estimate for the number of seconds light takes to travel from the object to Earth, by rounding each number to 1 significant figure.

- 4.Work out an estimate for 37 × 84, by rounding each number to 1 significant figure.
- 5.Jamal invests £600 in a savings account paying 3% simple interest per year. Work out the total amount in the account after 4 years.
- 6.A fruit punch is made from orange juice, pineapple juice and lemonade in the ratio 5:3:2. A jug holds 3.5 litres of punch in total. Work out the volume of pineapple juice needed.
- 7.A ribbon of length 90 cm is cut into two pieces in the ratio 4:5. Work out the length of the shorter piece.

- 10.Work out 2/5 of 45.
- 11.Find the missing number: ▢ ÷ 15 = 24
- 12.Work out 2 × 3 × 5 + 1 and decide whether the result is a prime number.
- 13.A sofa costs £800. Its price is increased by 25%. Work out the new price of the sofa.
- 14.Tickets to a theme park cost £38.50 for an adult and £19.75 for a child. A family estimates the total cost for 4 adults and 3 children, by rounding each ticket price to the nearest £5. Work out their estimate for the total cost.
- 15.Work out 2 3/4 − 1 5/6. Give your answer as a fraction in its simplest form.
- 16.Work out how many factors 36 has.
- 17.A jacket normally costs £65. In a sale it is reduced by 20%, and the shop then takes a further £5 off at the till. Work out the final price.
- 18.Amelia has 49 boxes of apples with 21 apples in each box. Work out an estimate for the total number of apples, by rounding each number to 1 significant figure.
- 19.The number of members of a running club increases from 45 to 54. Work out the percentage increase.
- 20.The same jumper is sold at two shops. Shop A charges £40 and Shop B charges £50. Write down the price at Shop A as a percentage of the price at Shop B.
