- 1.A hot air balloon is at a height of 20 m and rises at a steady rate. After 4 minutes it is at a height of 52 m. Work out the rate at which the balloon rises, in metres per minute.
- 2.A colony of bacteria doubles in number every hour. At 9am there are 5 bacteria in the colony. Work out how many bacteria there will be at 12 noon.
- 3.A car passes the 15 km marker on a road and passes the 195 km marker 3 hours later. Work out the gradient of the distance-time graph, that is the rate of change of distance with time.
- 4.A geometric sequence starts at 4, and each term after that is found by multiplying the term before it by 3. Write down the first four terms of the sequence.
- 5.Solve the simultaneous equations x + y = 1 and 2x + y = 5.

- 7.Work out the coordinates of the point where the graph of y = 2x − 6 crosses the x-axis.y = 2x − 6

- 9.The first four terms of a sequence are 11, 18, 25, 32. Ravi thinks the nth term is 7n. Work out the correct expression for the nth term.
- 10.A conversion graph shows that 5 miles is equivalent to 8 kilometres. Use this to work out how many kilometres are equivalent to 20 miles.
- 11.A zip-line runs from a platform 25 m high to a landing point 5 m high, over a horizontal distance of 40 m. Work out the gradient of the zip-line.
- 12.Tom is asked to classify the statement 5(2x − 3) = 10x − 15. Which statement about it is correct?
- 13.The diagram shows part of the graph of a reciprocal function of the form , passing through the labelled point. Work out the value of k.
- 14.Which expression is equivalent to 2(x + 6)?
- 15.A rectangle has width x cm. Its length is 3 cm more than its width. The perimeter of the rectangle is 38 cm. Form an equation and solve it to find x.
